...I truly believe the reason is that spoof movies for the past 20 years are made by people who don't like the movies they're spoofing. ZAZ loved Zero Hour and hence made Airplane, loved cop procedurals hence Naked Gun. Mel brooks enjoyed westerns hence Blazing Saddles and had huge respect for George Lucas' Star Wars hence Spaceballs. (Even Edgar Wright and Simon Pegg loved zombie movies and buddy cop movies, hence made Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz, the closest things to good spoof movies we've had in decades.) No offense to the Scary Movie franchise but I don't think the Wayans' particularly liked Scream, The Matrix, M. Night's, etc. movies. There is a line between making fun of the flaws of the things you love and making fun of the things you don't like.

14:45 ---One of the "Dinks" is played by Ed Gale, who's best known as the stunt double for Chucky the Killer Doll and the actor who played Howard the Duck. Gale was having lunch with his friend who's nearly seven foot tall and the friend had invited Mel Brooks to lunch. When Mel Brooks arrived, he looked at the two of them and asked, "How did you guys meet?" The Friend explained Gale was the guy who played Howard the Duck, and Brooks immediately said, "ANYONE who was in HOWARD THE DUCK............can be in one of my movies." And that's how Ed became a "Dink".

it went a lot farther than you realize, for example just before the Alien jumps out of his chest, he says "Oh no, not again" because it was the same actor from Alien, his second time having an alien popping out of his chest. The most famous behind the scenes story with this movie is, Mel Brooks went to George Lucas for permission to make a Star Wars spoof. He was given permission but was not allowed to sell any merchandise per their agreement. So Brooks put all the merchandise inside the film which Lucas thought was hilarious. Dark Helmet playing with his dolls was complete ad-lib from Rick Moranis. Radar jammed scene was brought to you by Michael Winslow, famous for Police Academy amongst other films.

I watched this with the commentary on the DVD… Mel Brooks in the commentary said that the commentary was available on the Laserdisc version, that he initially wanted the ship in the beginning to go on for the length of the movie and that the executives wanted a plot and everything! 😂😂 Also that photo of Princess Vespa's nose was just for the scene… 😁😁

King Roland was played by Dick Van Patton, the preacher in the wedding scenes is Ronnie Graham, a very good friend of Mel Brooks. John Hurt is the guy in the Diner who gets the alien bursting out of his chest was in the original Alien movie.

In the reverse the vacuum scene it was funny when Col Sandurz says it’s mega maid she’s gone from suck to blow I was surprised it got a PG rating back in 1987 with all the language and adult humor in it

When George Lucas agreed to give Mel Brooks fair use of Star Wars he had 2 main conditions: No merchandise and Lonestar couldn't dress like Han Solo. That is wht Lonestar dresses as Indiana Jones and the abundance of merchandise jokes within the movie.

The radar operator that you said sounded like someone making noises was Micheal Winslow, from Police Academy. He was like Fred Newman who did sound effects on Prairie Home Companion.

LMAO!!! I love this movie, so glad you watched it! I don't know to much trivia about this movie other than Mel Brooks had to ask permission from George Lucas himself about using some of the references from STAR WARS, Lucas allowed him only on the condition of no merchandising! so that whole scene when Yogurt is showing off all the merchandise, it was a spoof of it's own in a way! but Lucas allowed his company ILM to do all the space effects and postproduction! you definitely do need to check out the ALIEN movies, they're awesome! this movie is a classic and I love it, seeing you laugh at this makes me smile lol! loved this reaction Kay, keep it up! really quick #kayrequests you really need to check out TREMORS, that movie is so good! take care and can't wait to see the next movie reaction😁😁😁
