Awesome video, thank you, sir! I think I’m going to use the same mounting method for a vanity that I built for my wife. The only thing I’d change is make the 45 degree supports fold in automatically as the table top is folded up. I have a beard of similar length to yours and the struggle is real, my friend! I use an RZ-style knockoff from Amazon and the fit is terrible. The quest continues!!

How about 2 French cleats, one at your preferred sitting heights and one at standing. You could add the other part of the cleat to the part that attaches to the wall, and poof! That should do it!

Interesting, im looking at building something wider for my office. Hadnt considered those very long hinges. Any reason why you didn't fold it downwards to hide all the supports etc?

That was version 1. In version 2, that I did for a friends house,I did just that! I also changed the angular supports to take the weight off the hinges!

How about a toilet paper/magazine holder (Murphy table) for the bathroom?

Rockler has a folding shelf bracket ($25 each, which is a bit expensive) that doesn't require a clip to stay folded, and can be adjusted to slopes other than 90 degrees if you wish. Much less complicated. It is what I used for my wife's craft room.

~ hello Sir Burke! Firstly, I can't tell you how GRATEFUL I am for this video!! I've been looking for a fold-UP table solution for my daughter's playhouse (for wayyyy too long!) ... and your solution is both simple and elegant!! As you probably know, most folding tables tend to be fold-down - however, I need to preserve the area *beneath* the table (for an existing rack of storage bins). QUESTION: if my ideal tabletop dimensions are 46" wide by 23" deep, at a table height of 32" (to both clear the top of the storage rack AND work w/counter-height chairs), what modifications would you recommend? Based on your earlier comments, I'm thinking: 1) Perhaps something *other* than the piano hinge? 2) Possibly doing 90-degree folding legs instead of 45-degree folding supports? (Tho I get that if I choose legs: a table height of 32" means that when the table is in its UP position it'd add an extra ~23" in height, thus the 32"-long legs would extend beyond the 23" of table by ~9" when locked UP - right? - but I'd be okay with that!) 3) What about the type/thickness of wood for the tabletop? It won't need to bear much weight, just something two 11 year olds can sit at to draw or to use while playing a game/with dolls, etc. THANK YOU SO MUCH, in advance, for any input you might have on my project!! I like it a lot, the only thing I could say if I may, it's the fact that the weight is not supported by the 2 supports but by the hinges. I'd be affraid if I put too much weight on the desk they'd eventually fail. I know it's not supposed to get a lot of weight, but I always imagine the worst case scenario like "what if I trip accidentally put my weight on it ?". It'd just need a small piece of wood in the gap, but this piece would have to move when you fold it so I don't know. Anyway, nice build, I don't want to be the "you should" guy! 😅

I’m always looking to grow, edit and make things better, so constructive criticism is actually much appreciated! Yes, this is not for a ton of weight. My 6 year old sat on it the other day, he’s about 50 lbs. and while it held fine, eat that point I was nervous about it!

Hey Burke! I wanna do something like this in my tiny apartment. I have a 10x12 space that is VERY cheap. Rather than get a larger space I want to start building cheap custom furniture to make the space more efficient, and because I love building things. Do you think a version of this fold down desk that's 30"x85" would be doable? Would it rip out its anchors? How would you modify your design to accommodate for the larger size?

As long as it’s anchored into wall beams (studs) it should work, yes. O might opt for chunkier hinges instead of the piano hinge because piano hinges use ver shallow screws. The added weight might not mesh well with those. Other than that, I’d use fold down legs instead of the angled supports. One leg on each end and one at center should be more than enough.

I use a Powered Air Purifying Respirator. Couldn't go back to a mask. I was getting asthma from sawdust. All good now, thanks to the respirator.

I built it to the measurements of the space I had. If I had more space, I might have built it bigger. It all depends on your space.

Would this be strong enough to use as an assembly station? At the moment i only have a small shed (i will upgrade soon) and want to be able to free up space when im not working...

Absolutely. I would swap out for some chunkier hinges though, as piano hinge’s screws are pretty shallow.

Also might be a good idea for solidity to make the legs at a 90 degree down to the floor instead of the 45 degree to the wall I did in the video. Simple changes. Very doable.

I have the same respirator and have to keep beard cut short. But my beard is almost white and I look a little to much like Santa if the beard gets too long. I found adding a red jacket and a couple cleverly timed “ho ho ho’s” at the mall just before Christmas I had a dozen kids following me around. Now I am no longer welcome at the mall, the wife threw away the red jacket and I have to keep the beard short.

It depends. My Lowes and Home Depot, for that matter are AWESOME, and more than willing to either cut wood for you to size, or show you how to do it in store. However, i hear that that varies by the store.

This seems easy enough, but I feel like it would look cleaner to have the desk fold down rather than up. Also, regarding the face mask. I used to work for a chemical plant. Factory workers were not aloud to have facial hair for this exact reason. If it doesn't seal, it can't do its job.

OSHA Standard requires "NO FACIAL HAIR" while wearing a respirator! Reference NIOSH 84. Their is no respirator that will protect if you have facial hair. For sawdust i highly recommend a vaccum system. For airborne chemicals, paints, solvents, do these outside with plenty of ventilation....Construction OSHA trainer for 32 years.

Depends on the type at this point. Ended up getting one called Micro Climate Air2. Looks like a space helmet, but works remarkably well with the beard. Hepa certified and all!

Beard/Respirator: When I am working at a facility that requires respirators, we are required to be clean shaven. The respirator does not seal against facial hair. If I am working at home and I am creating sawdust, I usually just wear an N95 dust mask with or without my beard. Again, like the respirator, clean shaven will give you a better seal. I like the N95 dust masks by 3M with the check valve (breathing hole), reason being, my glasses fog up less. Also, I keep a 100% cotton handkerchief in my pocket for those times when I forget to restock on N95 dust masks, or I just need to make a little bit of dust. Cotton handkerchiefs are Not OSHA approved to protect your respiratory system, but they are better than nothing. My comment is 3 years too late (sorry about that), but I hope this helps you, or someone else reading the comments.

Yup yup. Right now I’m rocking the microclimate Air 2. Outstanding. Great visibility. HEPA rated. And I get to keep the beard!!!

I've had the chance to use this table a couple of times now. It's fun to whip out in front of people:) I can see what people are talking about when they say the legs are delicate, but they're design to support a "mostly" vertical load, not be torqued from the side or pushed back into place. If you just let the table open or close on it's own and don't force anything, it works great kzread.infoUgkxyFZUPFEey-PuqsPMxqaykBhgA1LWxFHh Once it's set up, it's pretty solid. My only gripe would probably be related to the clamps provided. They're not the highest quality. They do the job, so no big deal, but they could be better. All in all, pretty cool gadget.

To fit test a resperator at home cover the filter holes and take a very deep breath if it gets sucked down towards your face you have a good deal if it doesn't you need to look at a new mask. Know anyone that is certified in fantastic like me will let you know that a beard will stop you from getting a good seal as it creates a nice gap for the air to get through a way you can fight this is by covering the area with a thick spread of Vaseline as it will fill in all the gaps between your hairs and create a nice seal that's really your only way to get a good seal with a full beard.

I was far more concerned at the time with just getting it built so my son could use it during covid. I was focusing on function over form, but yes I think if it folded down, hiding all the other pieces, that would have looked better.

You really need a full face charcoal respirator. Google it.

Beards and air tight seals just dont get along. Unless you want to wear a fully enclosed breather, either shave, put Vaseline or it is what it is.

The respirator doesn't work because your hair prevents a proper seal around your face. You can have a beard/mustache as long as it sits inside far enough to not affect the sealing area. You need to wear it properly, or not at all... You get a false sense of security if you don't use it right.

@@BurkeMakesStuff @Burke Makes Stuff I guess that helps, I see the sealing area is farther back. That allows for more facial hair. You still need the sealing area to be free of hair, though. The mask does nothing if the particles are finding their way in between your hair. The importance of this depends on what you're trying to filter out. I use my mask at work to filter out heavy metals... Lead, arsenic, cadmium, beryllium, and a bunch of other nasty nasty stuff. Take no chances, be safe 👍

I think you have a problem with this concept. The weight of the table relies solely on those hinges-- its not actually supported by the table legs. Problematic...

Actually that’s incorrect, the legs are fully supported by the horizontal beam that is attached to the wall below. The legs rest on that and support the top. So the weight of the table and everything on it is fully supported by the frame of the wall. Not to mention, my 90 lbs son sits on it all the time, but what do I know… 🙄

I like being scruffy. Most of them require keeping part of your face clean shaved. Instead I ended up getting a MicroClimate Air. Although it looks like a space helmet, it works great!

Theres only 2 solutions to a respirator with a beard, first is an appointment with Gillette, the second is to try many expensive alternative masks that don't work then shave it off

Actually found a great 3rd option. It’s called Microclimate Air2. It looks like a space helmet, but is actually amazing! Fold of vision is wide open. Fans a quiet. Hepa filters throughout. Love it so far!

Shave a .5 inch gap on either side of your beard. Time for a new style

If you want a good seal on the vast majority of respirators, you have to forgo the beard. Maybe there are people that will swear up and down that a particular respirator works better with facial hair, but there's really no way around that as facial hair has a huge potential to mess with the seal. On the job, OSHA requires a clean shave where the seal is made so a compliant organization wouldn't even let you fit test if you show up with a beard. Exposure to hazmat is a real issue, and some of them are silent killers that aren't apparent until any deleterious effects are unavoidable. That being said, you can get respirator setups that don't rely on facial seals, but they're expensive, heavy, and ridiculous for work at home and the vast majority of jobs requiring respirators (example: pksafety.com/blog/which-respirators-are-facial-hair-friendly/).
