I LOVE that design for the Slipper!!!
I caught this show back when it aired on PBS and was pretty excited about it. The special effects were great for the time! I've been trying to remember the name of it for ages.

I was a kid when and used to wait till around 11:00 pm saturday night see it. I was bumbed when it got cancelled
What I loved about Space Precinct was that it was so Gerry Anderson; like a true live action Thunderbirds show. And this gave them the freedom to make special effects that dared to be 'just model shots'. You didn't expect them to feel superrealistic. That freedom translated in a very creative world, because you had a different kind of 'suspension of disbelief' like you'd have with Star Trek or Galactica. He was right about the premise of the show being a bit bollocks, but it was all very charmingly done and I remember liking the cast. But it was always a bit too weird and out there for a big audience; I did feel like a grown-up watching a kid's show, even though I think it tried to be more adult. It was a failed adult sci fi show, but an absolutely perfect show for kids. And mental kids like me. Great anecdote, by the way. Finally a story where the model maker gets some respect from the filmmakers on the set (unlike that crazy story about that time someone had to fix that star destroyer model in place mid-shot because the camera crew screwed up by failing to run the cooling for the internal lights in one of your other clips).
5:21 Wow, that was me front centre. I worked in the digital department. Mainly the 3d effects but I also hand painted all the laser blasts. Great times!
Nice little video as always, I recently caught an older video from about 10 months ago about Ian Hunter. I have said this many times before but I love how your videos concentrate on the people behind the scenes. They all come across as people who are passionate about what they do but also really decent people. Fun little stories like this put a human face on things. Many pulled some long long hours but developed some great friendships too. Thanks so much for these.

Many thanks! Sense of Scale is really all about the model makers and their work from their own perspective.
I have this show on dvd..the miniature work is unbelievable great for a tv show
I lOVED Space Precinct as a kid, one of the many things that really got me into scifi growing up, I just recently found my toy space precinct police bike!
I enjoyed the show but thought the alien characters were a bit dodgy.
Great work I wonder what a I ain't used to Painting I nt the little Druvers
Nice story. I haven’t seen Space Precinct in ages but my takeaway impression was it was too adult for kids, too silly for adults, and not well thought out sci-fi enough for either. Basically I felt it needed to pick an audience.
I remember watching space precinct, don't remember much about it other than it got cancelled and I think ended on a cliffhanger, remember it being a bit cheesy but fun
Liked the theme tune
All the modelwork was great...but the sets...speak about rough. Luckily the actors and their performance always elevated the show back to enjoyable levels.
cool
Yeah, been missing the Sense of Scale bits. After all this time, I think it's about time that the entire documentary just gets put up on Yoot, so people can finally see the entire show, not just singular pieces of the puzzle.

There is no one entire piece! It is meant to be seen in segments. And I keep adding new interviews when I can. It is an ongoing project that is about 20 hours long right now. Not sure why people keep expecting to see one film. The DVD I made 12 years ago was a teaser for this channel. More coming up next year!

@@piercefilm Ah. Ok, I saw it as a singular documentary, not an ongoing series. Thanks for clearing that up. I might suggest gathering all the interviews with one person into a singular playlist, so if someone is interested in specific people like Greg Jein or Joe Viskocil, they can play that feast.

I remember watching it in the mid-90s with Babylon 5(❤) and a few others. I think it struggled with the fact that its confused visual style and effects were neither firmly positioned in the past nor pointing to the future. The models were lovingly crafted for sure; I watched it specifically for the models, as I LOVED anything with spaceship and futuristic machinery models in it. Alas, overall it oozed a kind of marionation sensibility straight out of the 1960s and 'Thunderbirds Are Go', a distinctly childish tone, exceedingly little logic and originality - and way too much stage puppetry. Compared to its contemporaries (B5, DS9, Space: Above and Beyond, and even the stupider lemonades like 'Space Rangers') it felt out of place and time, as if you had turned on the TV to see 'The Dark Knight' and got Adam West's Batman instead. How I miss those years...
only one 21 episode season
2:21 oh There's my car 💥🤣🤣🤣🤣
