    It’s pretty fun to experiment with this step seq, also being able to change pitch etc makes bass lines easy too. Was stoked when I found that keys loop I used at the end, was aiming for a D’Angelo style vibe coz they feel his drummers like Questlove bring to the table is a big influence on my swingducation. Cheers!

Thanks, that's so clear now. This update simply puts the SP to the next level. I have an MPC live since it came out - and it's a great machine on its own - but the workflow seems so much straightforward on the SP (plus better portability coz the MPC is a heavy baby). Cool. Whats also cool about the step sequencer is you can easily adapt a total different workflow. My friend who still uses trackers always triggers samples on the grid and then adjust the startpoints of the sample while playing the beat. Its an intuitive way of working with samples. This technique is great with step sequencing I imagine.

    What would be really dope would be to be able to select a single hit in the step sequencer and move it in real time while it's playing for fine adjustment. Then you could put the whole beat in straight like you did originally then fine tune the swing after. That seems to be a lot more logical to me.

    Yeah this is how elektron sequencers work and it's so much nicer! Hold down steps and adjust any parameters only for that step. Really wish roland would add that, it's super painful workflow having to set the parameter, delete the step and add it again just to change timing or velocity.

    New update is dope and will enjoy the step sequencer for sure, but for drunken feel, I think playing in live (or some things live) will be quicker and yield better results. I can see using the step sequencer to quickly input the stuff you would usually use 100% quantize for, like getting the kick right on beat 1, and then switching over to live input mode. It’s cool that offsets are possible though!

    I know what you’re saying, I just spent the last 5 years working real hard on my finger drumming it’s hard to want to do it another way. For that first kick 100% on beat 1, I always use “WAIT” mode when starting the pattern rec - that is one of the best features of the mk2 for me.

    It's yet another tangent, but several of these songs had a second life as drum'n'bass remixes, primarily through Urban Takeover. They were a seminal act, launching a whole new dnb sound called Jump Up, which sadly veered off into some terribleness. The UT stuff is phenomenal though, the Jungle Brother remix is one of my all time tunes, and the VIP remix isn't far behind. Hefty biznizzzz, and brought in a whole bunch more fans.

    Do you know if there's a trick to program on quintuplets or septuplets grids? I was thinking about programming in TR-Rec mode on 10+1 or 20+1 steps for example (for quintuplets) then resampling and trimming the last hit to get a 20 steps loop. Not familiar enough with the machine to try it myself... Do you see another way to program that kind of rythms? Especially when I intend to mix different time signatures inside the same pattern (1/8 with 1/5, 17 with 1/16 and so on)

    So…my understanding is Shuffle (like on classic machines) adjusts all the 2nd 16th notes (pads 2, 4, 6, 8 etc in the step seq) but not the 8th notes (1,3,5,7 etc). Start moves any step your about to lay down.

    When I’m sick of this one n want to redo it I can, but for now I’m not ready to kill it 😂 Wasn’t too hard tho, it’s a roll of laminate from the hardware store like you’d use to cover a cheap table etc Remove faceplate n wipe it clean / dust free, remove back of laminate n lay it sticky side up on a table. Slowly starting at on curved side of the faceplate place it down n roll onto the laminate, keep any eye out for air bubbles. Once done, take a really really sharp scalpel n place the whole thing onto a surface you can carve into…rubber is best, maybe a magazine. Then just cut it out, I had to then go over some of the edges again with the blade to cut off any rough parts. Took at least an hour I think…

    Dope that they added this but I’d much rather be able to decide on the timing and velocity after adding all the steps… more like the Elektron way. I think it makes more sense and encourages more playing around. Too much thinking is required if you have to do it before and that doesn’t push me to try things out. Hopefully some day.

    Thanks man! I happen to remember this one - That’s a rimshot from a recording session I was part of like 15 years ago, part of it’s sound is I put on the sp202 to dirty it up, then put it on a type iv cassette tape and then gave it some compression (like 30ms attack) & eq (mostly to brighten it back up) to make it pop more.

  • @stuartdavid8493

    @stuartdavid8493

    It’s a classic! Thanks for such great information. So, there’s a lot of fighting about the difference between a rimshot and a cross stick. Rimshot is apparently a hard hit on the centre of the snare, hitting the rim at the same time. Cross Stick is just lying the stick on the drum head and clicking it against the rim. I’m struggling to work out which is best for sampling. Would you say this sample started with a cross stick, with the hi hat in there too? Or a rimshot?

  • @Nonjuror

    @Nonjuror

    5 ай бұрын

    @stuartdavid8493 hmmm…then probably a cross stick would be more appropriate. Hi hat was definitely played, it wasn’t an individual single hit, I chopped it out of a jam - but I didn’t use the hi hat mic’s track, just snare & room mics. I think that helps with the sound of any snare, having a hat in there that’s a bit distant, it doesn’t then get in the way of your hats you add in the beat.

    Hey man, thanks for the vid on this really helping me out with a project… got a question though - have you experienced any latency issues with samples not firing at the exact time in the sequence? I am trying to create one 4 bar pattern with multiple 4-bar-length samples firing on the first step, so that I can use the mute/unmute function to play a set. I’m finding that samples aren’t firing as they should be and the way they misfire changes each time I create the pattern. It’s a weird one, I’m thinking processing speed issue… Thoughts? Thanks again.
