Soviet-Era Space Shuttle Sits in Remote, Abandoned Hangar
An abandoned space shuttle site from the Soviet era draws many urban explorers, even though it’s off limits to the public. Chris Luckhardt of Toronto is one person who risked getting caught by the Russian military to explore the decaying buildings and spacecraft that were left behind.

Hey everyone, I'm the Canadian photographer in the interview who filmed these clips during my 2nd trip. My first trip was in 2019. Happy to answer any questions! 🚀

During your exploration, did you conduct a preliminary analysis to identify the presence or potential exposure to chemical contaminants, such as lead-based compounds, volatile organic solvents, or industrial process residues? If yes what measures did you take to protect yourself, and what do you recommend to other intrepid photographers who also wish to visit abandoned locations? Thank you for the beautiful images!

@@viktoriusnepomuk5716 Excellent questions! I did as much research as possible on those points and everything else you can imagine for such an adventure. But it's a classified site so detailed information is minimal. I've explored several dangerous and toxic places around the world and take necessary precautions on a case by case basis (e.g., respirators, protective clothing). I understand the risks and take responsibility for my activities. I recommend against doing these types of activities, but anyone who does it should be extremely cautious, research as much as possible, wear protective clothing, bring emergency supplies, stay hydrated, and be prepared for the unexpected. Also, wear sunscreen (hat tip to Baz Luhrmann).

Fun fact the an-225 mirya was originally built to carry those shuttles
I went to an aircraft museum around Washington DC. They had a space shuttle... the boosters behind it made me feel like an ant.
The baikonur, and the buran. I've been there, I've seen it. Cheers

A crew from the original manufacturing team inspected the shuttles and building in September 2021. They reported that the shuttles would have to be dismantled to be moved, and the building is at imminent risk of collapse. Hopefully something is done to save them before it's too late!
I would argue that the overwhelming stimulation is subjective (each to their own)
Buran was better and more capable then the US Space Shuttle. So why wasn't it used? Because the Soviet Union collapsed. If Russia would of some how given it to the US, it would still be flying as it would of been cheaper as it was able to take heavier payloads. The flight computers were better also.

What made the space ship better?
@chrisluckhardt
19 күн бұрын
@@tiffanylocus251 Generally speaking, it was an evolution of the US space shuttles, so it was naturally a better space vehicle (similar to how a 1985 car was an evolution of a 1980 model). But the Soviet shuttles had several design differences, including autonomous flight capability, a higher payload capacity, launching on the versatile Energia rocket rather than an integrated system, a more advanced heat shield, and more safety features including more mission abort capabilities.

Only issue I have with these statements is the “giving them to the us”. Russia or even the Soviet Union would never ever give any of their space technology to the US.

Not completely true. The only one to ever fly was destroyed in the hanger collapse in 2002. But I believe the one pictured here is the second one built and was only ever 90% completed but still exists
So, we now leave space shuttles just laying around in foreign countries?

_Edit: It’s amusing to see Americans in the replies below believing the fictional NBC News story from 2008. That journalist fabricated stories about faulty Buran tiles and electronics, all of which have since been debunked by valid verified sources. Links aren’t allowed in comments so do your own unbiased research._ Sadly, yes. The full video on my channel shows a clip in August 1995 of them parking the shuttles in the refuelling building. The new Russia government didn't have funding and quietly "forgot" about the Buran program. My take is that it was a bit of an embarrassment that they squandered $125 billion (in today's money) for mostly nothing.

@@joshuauriarte452 The spacecraft itself was more advanced than the US shuttles - an evolution on what already existed. But, as you stated, the Soviets and later Russia didn't have the funding to continue and spent $125 billion (in today's US funds) on a now-abandoned facility at the Cosmodrome.

Different building and Buran shuttle. The first Buran-class shuttle was destroyed in 2002 when the roof of the MIK building collapsed. The back shuttle in these clips is the second of the Buran-class shuttles and was 95% completed.

The front space shuttle is a full scale engineering mock up. The back space shuttle is a 95% complete model and was scheduled for an autonomous orbital mission to the Mir space station.
make you wonder who designed and built this ship first Russia or US
@chrisluckhardt

The US was first and it prompted Soviet authorities to cancel their original concept and build a competing space shuttle. Buran ended up being unique rather than a direct copy but it drained the Soviet economy significantly.

Soviets did finish one of five orbiters. One reached orbit in 1988. The back shuttle in these clips was 95% complete and had a scheduled mission to connect with the Mir space station. Three others were slight redesigns and production was underway - the third orbiter was 50% complete.

Now? Two in this building, one in a German museum, and one in a Moscow hangar. Five were built or being built for orbit and multiple shuttle bodies were built for non-orbital testing purposes. Of the five intended for orbital missions, one reached orbit, one was 95% complete (seen in this video), and three others were 50% or less completed by the time the program was cancelled.
