    Yesterday I heard this song at a funeral and I cried when I heard this song, so beautiful. It hit me in my soul. I didn't know the song before so after the funeral I went to a friend and asked him if he knew which song it was. John Prine with Souvenirs he said and when I got home I immedialtely searched for this song on youtube . That's how I found your video. Because I'm a guitar player myself I grabbed the tabs from your page and started practicing it. I'm not a travis picker at all but this is a good study piece with special memories on a great friend ! Thanks for the very well explained tutorial. It's awesome.

    woah. that's a heck of a story. Sorry for the loss. Yeah, Prine is floating around out there but unless you're told by a friend he's totally lost to the airwaves.Glad you discovered him. His last record is worth an entire spin "Tree of forgiveness". Every song he hits upon some folk archetype. It's brilliant. It's all timeless but not overdone. And thanks! Glad you learned from the channel. I pride myself on accuracy and being meticulous to the picking details. If you're rusty or a nube check out my playlist "Travis Finger picking". especially the video "travis picking primer". that will be a great crash course.

    @@MikesMusicMethod, it's not that hard to play I think when I have the tabs in front of me played a three quarter of the original speed... But when I remove the tabs my muscle memory don't take over yet. It's a technique I'll have to develop. Normally I play rock or blues on a electric with a pick and sometimes hybrid picking. I will check out your crash course for sure.

    You are completely wrong about his early work and his voice, you just haven't heard enough of it. Listen to Bruised Orange, there are several versions including one that is an electric version during his long hair period probably in the late 70s to the early 80s. Souvenirs was like maybe the 4th song he ever wrote, but certainly in the first 10. I saw an interview where he says he was playing the first three songs he had at an open mic night at a place called the wooden peg or the fifth peg, something like that, in south Chicago, I think don't hold me to all the specifics. But anyhow, he decided he needed a new song and wrote this song on the bus on the way to the pub. Don't miss out on all these great works you seem to be a good guitar player and would really enjoy his early work. Great video, by the way, thanks.

  • @MikesMusicMethod

    @MikesMusicMethod

    2 жыл бұрын

    Chip, thanks for the nice note. Yes, I'm from the south side of Chicago. So it resonates with me. I've since listened to all of Bruised Orange since recording this, and...::cowers and covers face:: dont hit me. lol But I still make the same claim. His voice and the production don't appeal to me at all. This is to say nothing about the songwriting. It's excellent! But I'm not pulled into the record because the aesthetic of his voice and the production don't rope me in. And nothing intellectual about it. It's almost like a smell or taste preference. Nothing I can do to change it but keep trying it every once in a while and seeing if the sensation changes. It's the same with Dylan. For years I couldnt stand his voice on New Morning. And then a decade after my first listen it sunk in and I was finally able to really enjoy the record. However it also works the other way. For several years I loved the voice of Father John Misty, and now the appeal has vanished and slipped through my fingers.
