There were so many layers to the psychological pressure for Kane’s penalty: - Needs to score to keep his team in the tournament with 10 mins to go (conversion rate drops significantly in this scenario) - Already taken one in the game - Against his club mate who knows where his favourite penalty is (and his backup which is down the middle) - Chance to become England’s record scorer Pressure got to him 😢

Before this game, Italy was the only serious contender that this squad and Southgate had to face, and they lost. The second serious contender was France yesterday and once again they lost. People will hype up beating Germany in the Euros but that was (and still is) the worst national team in the history of German football. It's like beating the current Uruguay and hyping it up as if you did it back in 1930. People will hype up reaching the semi finals in 2018 and the euros finals in 2021, but they had no serious competition in either of those runs and once they faced a solid team (even Croatia) they bottled it, and they will continue to bottle it until a manager with some balls steps in.

Your analysis is the best I've seen following this match, too many pundits saying England played better, crying about the Ref. England couldn't score a goal "without a penalty" They don't have the ability to score against a good defence. Yes, they have good players but they missed shots that true talent would have finished, want evidence, watch Giroud. I thought he was finished, proved me wrong. France's first goal was top class. France could have turned it up another gear if they had to.

spot on goldridge. Exactly what i thought QF then out. We did not create enough tonight, the French were not tested enough. The one thing I wouldsay at leat we went out with some fight, we were not as passive as we were against Italy. We should have one that game. It always the same, we do not come up with those magic moments but we fought. To Kane centrist for years its frustrating. I want a forward in the the box like Linekar or Giroud and other outlets.

The gap in emotional intelligence between teams made the difference. France acted like they'd been there before, they stayed composed even though they weren't the best team. England was way too emotional throughout the game, they wasted energy and lost purpose because of that, Bellingham and Saka especially where whining a lot, a better manager would correct that I'm sure. Southgate is more of a caretaker, these players badly need leadership and direction from the bench, not a guy who claps his hands every once in a while.

I said all week the France game is the real sign if England have improved. Getting France was a real test. Interestingly this was not the strongest France team, but it was a very balanced and well oiled one. Was a winnable game. Sadly still not good enough. Croatia, Italy and now France. These were the games on paper that England would have expected to be challenged in the last recent major competitions. They lost all 3 games. A deep review and introspection needs to happen. Something needs to change. An honest review will hopefully bring insight as to what. The Kane penalty was very poor. I was definitely surprised, but those moments make the difference. Netherlands and Croatia from the previous games showed what it looks like to take those moments by the scruff..Croatia went through Netherlands didn't but they both took the moments. I think sadly all of the teams from the quarters probably beat England to be fait but i couod be wrong.. (one of the English pundits says the English France game was the best of the round which is untrue). France didn't appear rattled the whole game. Despite giving penalties it almost looked like they didn't get out of first gear. 😕 back to the drawing board for England

Couldn't understand why Saka was taken off as he was causing so many problems whereas Sterling did little. One thing I will say about the squad is that they gave 100% to try and make the unworkable methods of Southgate to work.

Totally agree. “Insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.” England has the best group of talents in the world for some years now. That they don't win cannot not be the manager's tactics. I'm sure most of the other countries' coaches would relish having this team. WC 2018 semi-final, Euro 20 final, now qtr-final, remember these chances come only once every 4 years.

You made us going back to the game style we had in 2018 that was really defensive and that was really scary. We got really lucky at this point. Lloris and Griezmann really helped us levelling this up against a better team tonight. Ennemy for fun ,friend forever, highest football level game of the competiton untlill now.

I agree. Worst part was how conservative England played. Yes the midfield was yours, but at the expense of creative passing closer to the box. Bellingham showed some immaturity. England would have to be the best team going in to the tournament to win it and I don’t just mean ranked one. They would have to have recently demonstrated they can beat the top teams and then they may win it just. Look at the Rugby Union Team in 2003. Best team and just about win it. Cricket Team in 2019, won it by a slither. What also bothered me a bit with England was the lack of headed goals. It is often a header that wins it. We saw that in both quarter finals yesterday.
