Southeast Indiana Day Trip on the Yamaha XT225 Dual Sport - Dillsboro to Rising Sun from Cincinnati

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

This day trip route in southeast Indiana is one of my favorites for the XT225. It includes a fun paved road from Dillsboro to Rising Sun and a scenic gravel road alongside a creek. Rising Sun is a beautiful little town that sits along the Ohio River, just west of Cincinnati, Ohio. I chat quite a bit in this video about everything going on right now, including my recent internal debate about whether or not to get an aftermarket exhaust for the XT225. Have an opinion? Please let me know!

This channel is for motorcycle riders, mechanics, and enthusiasts who enjoy the simple joys of motorcycling, from dual sport riding to fixing up old bikes on a budget. My videos also consider the perspective of short motorcycle riders (when it’s helpful and relevant) in choosing and modifying bikes and equipment.
I’ve been hooked on motorcycles since 1975 when, at the age of 11, my dad brought home a shiny new Suzuki TM75 for me and a Suzuki TC185 for himself so that we could trail ride together in the hills of West Virginia. Since then I’ve worked as a mechanic, owned countless bikes, and even worked in the motorcycle industry for a number of years as a photographer and journalist. Now I do mainly video production and enjoy nothing more than making and sharing these motorcycle videos on KZread.
Thanks again for watching. Ride safe!

Thanks Jimmy. I too really enjoy your videos. The ones where you give your honest in depth refections seem to be the most enjoyable. I have a friend in Cleveland that I share your videos with. He loves them as well. We're both in our early 70's and yearn to get back on a small bike again. Thanks for all you do on your channel. Gord

I bought one of these for my dad. During the process of refreshing it we fell in love with it, so we bought one for us. I performed the Z1 1” hole method in the exhaust. Idle screw is backed out 3 turns. And the main jet is now at 130. The throttle response is much better, and it generally feels more lively. My stock bike goes 75-80, but I top out at 65 for any length of time. Generally I ride it about 60mph. I’ve got other bikes, like a Harley Dyna, a KTM450XC-F, YZ 250 2 stroke, but I still love riding the xt225 on trails. Even though it is heavy, it feels light. Much easier in single track than my 450XCF , but minus about 30hp.

Good Morning Jimmy. Thanks for another cool video. It's great to see the towns and landscapes from another part of the world. So different, but often so similar. I guess installing a new pipe is a personal decision. You've put forward your reasoning and only you can decide which way to go 'cos you'll be living with it. Good luck with the final decision. I look forward to seeing what you decide. Stay safe. Keep the rubber side down. Regards from S Africa Clive

Another great video! I have the FMF exhaust with a forest approved spark arrester/quiet insert. I do like the looks. The sound is a little deeper and with the quiet insert the added volume is very acceptable. I also like to tinker and fortunate financially so a new exhaust was probably inevitable. When I decided to pull the trigger on the exhaust I also didn’t have an expectation of improved power performance, but I am hoping the free flowing exhaust with a properly jetted carb will be more efficient at evacuating heat from the motor. I guess my purpose for the exhaust still falls in the performance camp but most people think of performance as increased power and I think about it as long term preservation of the motor. I live in Phoenix so heat is a constant battle. I kept the OEM exhaust so I can return back to stock if I ever want to but I have no plans to do that.

Thanks a bunch for the informed perspective, Thumper Bandit! It sounds like we think alike. I'm especially glad to hear you have the quiet insert and that it sounds and runs good...that's the way I'd probably go, too. I think everything you said about heat evacuation means you're looking to make the engine as efficient as possible, which is sound reasoning. I like it!

Thanks for the ride. Intake and exhaust are factory balanced for performance. Changing the exhaust can actually have a negative performance effect. But if you want to increase top end speed, replace the sprockets. Check out my site for how to. I love my XT and have put over 25K miles with no issues. These are rock solid bikes.

That's great advice, Darren, the stock exhaust really does fit the environment. And I feel fortunate to be able to get away to these quiet areas, it's a great escape. I live in a city near our downtown area but it's only about a 30 minute ride to these rural areas...the best of both worlds!

I owned a 92 xt225 serow, best bike I enjoyed, was little gutless in the midrange and top end. I would buy another one and do the upgrade for the jet in the carb, pipe and muffler, with k&n filter. Then switch to more aggressive dual sport tires for the fun in California again.

Hey Jimmy, thanks for inspiring me to dial in the suspension: 1" of preload plus an extra ounce of oil in each fork, and tightened up the rear shock, and it's radically better, not exaggerating. Huge improvement in hill climbing, now that she isn't leaned way back from excessive rear end sag. Nearly complete elimination of nose dive on mild braking. YAY!!! Probably don't need to chase stiffer springs or fancy aftermarket shocks, the 225 rocks plenty even when stock. About aftermarket mufflers: A dear friend bought a used XT250 with an FMF pipe, but the owner had tossed out the stock muffler. She ended up searching out someone who wanted the FMF so she could trade back to stock. BECAUSE QUIET. Even with the FMF sound reducing insert. The only reason I would ever buy an aftermarket muffler would be if it could be quieter without power loss. Heck it could even gain power while reducing sound, there is no reason that isn't perfectly possible, and I wouldn't complain even if it added a few pounds to do BOTH. I will never go louder, it's a complete deal breaker for me, and even with the stock I constantly wish for quieter. Maybe if I had the money I would consider an electric like the KTM, but then you have no range. Look, maybe I'm a freak, slow riding single track like a pretend trials rider, almost always with my helmet off so I can hear and feel better, I like being in the woods, and ultimately having an engine running kills a big piece of the magic. Maybe I should be riding an electric bicycle instead, but no, screw that, I'm a biker for life dammit! So yeah, if I ever get bored and dig into mufflers, I'm going to go off the reservation, and find out how to go near silent without losing power. Stealth for the win! I say, dare yourself to imagine gaining a little power from stock, but hearing only the engine, chain and tire noise, with nearly no exhaust noise at all. Ask yourself if that isn't a delightfully suitable goal for the already amazing XT225. Maybe you have the knowledge and/or connections to seek an answer to such a challenge.

Thanks so much for the suspension report, that sounds great! I love hearing what a little ingenuity (and little to no money) can accomplish, especially when dealing with relatively inexpensive bikes to start with. It makes sense to do what refinements in set up we can before just whipping out the checkbook. And the FMF pipe info you shared was informative. I'm 100% with you on being stealthy. I grew up on the super loud 2-strokes of the 70s and that was fine for the times...but if we want to keep our public riding areas then we need to figure out how to keep toning things down. It's cool to see the young kids growing up on little electrics like the Stacyc, ripping around in their back yards.

Reducing weight is a good reason for aftermarket exhaust. Especially when you start with 16 hp. I am putting a Lithium Phosphate battery in my XT225 for a start. 5Lb here and there, makes a difference. Original exhausts are typically heavy. If you want a 10% power increase, lose 10% of the bike weight. A lighter bike also goes over things easier. There are no heavy Trials Bikes.
