Personally I love the slam door trains.

This jouranlist is annoying me, I get if they were dated but as an enthusiast I could really do without his opinions when I'm trying to appreciate this piece of history. He was probably older than the trains himself anyway lol

The Class 421 4-CIG and Class 4-VEP electric units operated on the South Western Division for years but I believe Class 411 4-CEP electric units helped out especially with there being a shortage of suitable stock on the Reading section.

A year and 2 months shy of 20 years since that happened!!!! Alistair Stewart as well with his thespian stylings as always. That was a blast from the past! I passed my test in 2005 as well. Can't remember travelling much on slam door trains because we always went everywhere in the car. I do remember looking at people opening the doors before the train stops and thinking it was weird. Sad to see them go but could you imagine they were still in service and some plonker decides to open the door at 60mph showing off with their mates or, worse yet, committing suicide???!!!

They weren't supposed to open below 5/6 mph. I'd just been speaking with somebody who was apparently a friend of a rail worker who died after an accident involving the doors. Personally, I'm aware of the dangers, and that changes had been made over time. The danger you speak of is virtually non-existent!

1:35 I actually would not call this tears of joy in many means. More like tears of sorrow for witnessing a good peice of art no longer in service however, if it is tears of joy, maybe that's because they had been in service for so long and people enjoyed the hell out of these trains. I'm pretty sure that everyone was mourning that they had to be got rid of due to Health And Safety matters.

They were at the end of their lives anyway, they were on the way out. If they weren't as old then they would have probably fitted an interlock like they did on the HSTs

Funny how they mocked these when they left yet the HSTs were basically adored by everyone when they retired.

Nothing "funny" about it. Deliberate conditioning is more like it - telling people what to feel/think. B*stards.

When he tried to open the window in the corridor @02:48 t wouldn't open because the clasp to the left had to be depressed before it could be opened !! It clearly stated this on the signage above the window !! But yes these trains were dangerous! A door could be opened at 90 mph and no one would know !

Perhaps 🤔 it serves the railway 🚃 passengers right if they have an accident by opening the slam door 🚪 trains 🚆. Stay safe and behave yourselves. Thank you 🙏 🤩 ☺️ . 👍

Latter day comment.. Services are no better, fares are extortionate,You get better seats in Guantanamo Bay and whilst the modern stock is faster, got a/c when it works and the train too,the old MK1 stock got the South East moving and with great reliability and character..Glad that 4VEP 3417 is back on the Mainline and hopefully they'll fix the Brighton Belle finally n get that Unit back on Mainline too.🙂

They never made any claims that it was the end of delays, cancellations and fare hikes to be fair to them

The idea of ( manually ) opening doors would be a great safety feature on the new GWR Lithium battery trains .... Imagine an INTENSE battery fire and smoke ... and the door buttons DO NOT WORK ...... OMG ....... DAVE™🛑

You realize that the emergency door release handle can be used to open the door, and you're not just using the door open button

Great trains. Fun too. Rattly, noisy, crazy bouncy seats (and windy and rainy if it was one with the outside handles and other passengers got out and didn’t raise the window) 😂 Never had a problem with the lavs or the windows on them, unlike this “journalist”. Sadly, most slam doors were full of asbestos, so not many were preserved due to cost. I miss the 306 and 312s especially.

The 4vep and 2/4 epb were bad. That door at every seat.. the Kent coast 4cep ( class 411) I think, we're better.

I get the feeling that that reporter had an instruction to run the slam door stock down to countermand any public disquiet. In fact, the trains had loads of character, they were NOT uncomfortable to travel in, they had neither aircraft style nor tube train style seating, but well upholstered seats in bays of four persons, and I never heard or read of injuries due to opening the doors. Not saying there weren't any, just saying that they were very uncommon. Abolishing them was a typical health and safety gimmick. They would of course have disappeared anyway due to high running and maintenance costs. The worst aspect of all this is the ban on slam door stock being upheld to this day for heritage railways running Mk 1 and older carriages. That is just an attack on heritage railways, nothing else, and certainly not H&S.

The slam door 🚪 trains 🚊 were very good 👍 because it happened that these trains 🚆 took railway 🚃 passengers from place to place via place on the trains 🚊. The last time 🕰️ slam door 🚪 trains 🚊 happened in around perhaps 🤔 Thursday 26th May 2005 is almost 😅 20 previous years ago in May 2025. I think 🤔 the trouble 👿 with slam door 🚪 trains 🚊 is the railway 🚃 passengers want to impatiently get off the trains 🚆 very quickly and they are highly dangerous because it can lead to fatal means death 💀 ☠️ or injuries and I’m honestly am not joking 🙃. Slam door 🚪 trains 🚊 are now a thing of the past and finally replaced by automated operating doors 🚪 which it’s much better. I’m pleased 😀 about it. Hopefully 🙏 🤞 fingers crossed 🤞 that no one 1️⃣ ☝️ are being damaged. Please 🙏 behave yourselves and stay safe. Thank you 🙏 🤩 ☺️ . 👍

Hi There Again my real Name is Mr Cannadine T. Boxill-Harris, I have another interesting idea for most of us Class 307 Fans out there, rather than scrapping most of those Class 307’s maybe you guys can convert them and including the refurbishment into those Leyland 680 Engine, Volvo B10M Engine, Cummins M11 Engine, Gardner 6LXC Engine, Gardner 6LXB Engine, Gardner 8LXB Engine, Class 307’s and convert all of them into a 2 Carriages and Three Carriages Class 307’s for most of us Diesel Train Fans out there PLEASE. Are you still going to do this interesting type of Project for all of us out there Pretty PLEASE?

Say what you like, but safe design of trains is immeasurably better, old trains crushed like a paper cup in a collision
