Southern Slamdoor Sunset (Pt 2). The last 'scheduled' run. Class 421 4-CIG, 423 4-VEP slammers.

On Friday 19 August 2005, Southern ran their last scheduled slamdoor service. This was the 17:17 London Victoria to Seaford and Eastbourne comprising 4-CIG 1866, 4-VEPs 3535 and 3486.
While Southern DID run some more slam doors after this, they were specials or to cover shortages only.
Went along to Three Bridges to catch the sight and sounds of these faithful old units for the last time.

A lot of people would not agree with this, but 4 cig unit with "CONNEX SOUTH CENTRAL " written on it was a good colour scheme.

Loved those 4Cigs and 4Ceps……lovely times travelling between Lewes and East Croydon in the 60s and 70s whilst working on the Southern, when we had a proper Railway.

The sound of those doors slamming is incredibly nostalgic. Well recorded, brings it all back. I loved the old 2-BIL units; unique aroma, unique motor growl when starting and fabulously comfortable upholstery, even in 2nd class.

I'm told that the upholstery contained horse hair in those ?

@@doveronefoxtrot4417 That's true! About 4" deep and sprung beneath, marvellous. These units used to really jump about through the junction at Barnes going full pelt, the bounce was wonderful on the cushions :-)

Was that the service where you went fast from East Croydon to Three Bridges? Where as most services (except Brighton Express) would stop at Gatwick…

It’s an old train 🚊 that has been on these railways 🚆 🚃 for many years. All of these trains 🚊 have a toilet 🚽 🚻 and a first class accommodation. 👍

Hi Matthew. Thanks for watching! Those 4-CIG (Class 421) and 4-VEP (Class 423) units were built in batches between 1964 and 1974. Not sure about the exact age of the units in the film, but fair to say they didn't owe the railway anything by 2005!

Travelling on them was an absolute misery. Even in 2005 it felt shocking that such dreadful trains were on British railways

That Connex livery just looked like a metaphor for the company, cheap assed and poorly thought out

Given that Connex had to be bailed and then failed in 2003 I expect the livery was the least of their problems. There's nostalgia for those slam-door trains but probably not much for Connex itself!
