Growing up during the troubles in Belfast was a crazy time. I’ve seen a lot of young people online recently saying that they’d “take up arms” for their side . These people don’t realise what this period was like for both catholics and Protestants. Friends , families , co workers dying on a yearly basis , sometimes multiple funerals a year .

One of the main reasons I decided to take this on. At least in some small way these documentary give an idea of how it was but they will never fully grasp living through those days with no end in sight.... I still can't believe we came out of it. They're watching videos on social media that glorify the troubles. They are bored and think it would be good crack to go back to the rioting every night. If only the knew the fear and pain we went through on a daily basis. I remember going to work every morning and hoping I came home especially in late 80s early 90s

Did 4 tours from the late 70s and 80s. Although I’m proud in a way - I joined up under no illusions - and even enjoyed it, historically Britain (and England before that) were wrong. And they committed dreadful crimes upon the Irish people. Over centuries. I have no truck with indiscriminate bombers. But I can respect the soldiers who bore arms against the British Army. It wasn’t a war. It became, for us, a counter-insurgency operation. It remained for the IRA and Sinn Fein a fight for freedom. I knew many such freedom fighters. We both lost our brothers. I’m glad the Irish people in the north have peace, albeit fragile. I served with ex-miners. We wondered if we might find ourselves in IRA boots had our fates been otherwise. The British political cant was disingenuous.

Well said a balanced and justified comment.

Amazing point in time documentary. Reflects that in 1971 the situation was out of control. Fitzgerald and Cruise O’Brien sounded desperate whereas the Provos sounded composed. The fact that the Chief of Staff of the Provos could appear on a public platform in Dublin showed how weak the Lynch government was after the Arms trial debacle.

As a southerner, it really makes me sick hearing the pontificating of Garett Fitgerald and Conor O'Brien. They had no idea of what it was like to live in Northern Ireland during this time.

What did you want Jack Lynch to do? The problem was Maudling and Heath who didn't bring in direct rule when the soldiers came. Faulkner and Dr No destroyed it.

​@@stephenholmes1036 Thinking one might muse that the historical narrative was that Reggie Maudling and Ted Heath only came to power in the Spring of 1970, being so it was James Callaghan and Harold Wilsons government that were in power in 1966-1970 predated that of Maudling and Heaths government 19th June 1970, [ but as for those Direct Rule plans that came in much, much later 28th March1972] other events were to the fore out of Downings Street ,'Falls Curfew' July 1970, Internment 9th August 1971 then of course Bloody Sunday 30 Jan 1972...

Self-interest, amazing how southern politicians are exactly the same now, over 50 years later.

My folks thankfully managed to get to South Africa in the 70s but we still visited family every few years my mum and dad were so heartsore seeing what was happening. My dad passed before he was able to go back one last time mam the same.

Same here alot went over our heads down south,but i do remember been a kid and cycleing every day down Mrs Tyrells shop to see had she put up any new pictures of hunger strikers that had passed warriors of Ireland,it hit me hard as a preteen they only wanted POW status it was that simple for me its our country british troops on streets of the occupied counties was a war,a lot i dont know these docu's fill in the gaps in my Irish History,Thank you ☘️💯

I am 59 in/from Liverpool, I have studied the history of Ireland ... I can understand (over the period of history) why people have joined the I.R.A. yet the only outcome - way forward is democratic politics. As for my perspective, I am a Nationalist ... I have no doubt that within the next twenty years ( I hope I see it!) Ireland will be a 32 county Irish Republic, how by democratic politics!. One thing I hate is The Border ... Its the British Partition of Ireland!.

Didn't know an Englishman in charge of the military of the IRA in 1971😮

It was during the funeral of Charlie Hughes, a PIRA volunteer killed in a fued with OIRA, a British soldier saluted the passing cortege.

Being a newly married eighteen year old in Belfast in 1969 on the Protestant side of Crumlin Rd just below Ardoyne chapel. I also find these archived accounts invaluable. I couldn’t see the bigger picture at the time. But now looking back I have to think what was it all for? They didn’t want us to have six counties , but welcomed the third world in which is now taking over, 52 mosques in Dublin! Make it make sense!

"They" being Irish Republicans wanted to re-unite the country. It wasn't about everyone being Irish and Catholic, more about everyone being Irish regardless of religion. At least for Republicans. What have Mosques to do with anything? So what if an immigrant population with a different religion practice their faith here? It's not as though they are trying to dominate any groups of people with a different faith.....

Very interesting that at 2:10 and 22:40 the front Bencher calls the PIRA “ fascist " and "Nazis". He also calls them socialist, so I shall refer to them as national socialists . This term may certainly be applied to Sin Fein today. This secterianism also is a parallel to say Hamas or the PLO which find many supporters in Irland and NI today. If we then remember how keen the Irish were on Adolf Hitler......... The rampant antisemitism today amongst the Irish left also underlines their national socialist credentials .
