Labour victory undermined by galvanised Muslim vote | The Big Picture

Gaza has had a significant impact on the UK elections.
Despite a resounding Labour victory, the party suffered deep cuts in a number of key seats - thanks to an organised and angry British Muslim voter base that sought to send a clear message.
Five independent candidates campaigning on Pro-Palestine platforms managed to overturn Labour majorities - including former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn.
In 32 seats with more than a 20% Muslim constituency, Labour lost on average 24% of its support.
We examine the numbers, and the lessons they teach about the changing political landscape.

That is true. But we Muslim's have a religious duty to defend the Palestinians as it is a sin not to. Also the constituencies have large Muslim populations so it should have been the pro Palestinian candidates guaranteed a win. Very depressing.

@@Pomegranate_David that’s because a very large majority of Muslims that are eligible to vote do not vote I myself voted for the very first time in this election only due to the Gaza issue but a very large majority of Muslims I know personally did not vote or have never voted in their life it’s time the Muslim population needs to understand that they can choose who to put in power with their votes and hopefully will start using their votes majority usually always vote labour every single year to the point their areas are the most deprived and underdeveloped labour candidates come there knowing it’s a easy win for them year in and out they can stay in power. While ignoring the local people and acting like they don’t exist and knowing they will win there next year aswell unfortunately

Sorry watching what? A party has won a landslide with only 20% of the population voting for it? Only a 60% turnout? And the centre right vote was larger than Labour? A few urban heavily muslim populated areas have vote on ethinic lines! Some middle-class metropolitans and some students supported them. What exactly has the USA got to watch out for? Voter apathy? People staying away from politics with 40% not wanting to support any of them? As an Irish man I love middle-class British logic and I'm an independent.

It's pretty terrifying what's happened in the UK this week - we now have four MPs who are basically Islamists and were elected on foreign policy concerns. With no controls on immigration, which is highly unlikely, this type of voting will only grow and potentially drag us back to the dark delusions of the past, like most countries where Islam has power. On the plus side, it's still early enough to arrest the decline, so the next couple of elections will certainly be interesting.

The last thing the UK needs is sectarian, religious politics in our country. We had it hundreds of years ago, and we had it more recently in Northern Ireland. No good will come of it. People should be concerned about local and national issues when it comes to local and national elections. We don't want to see conflict from the Middle East or the Indian subcontinent imported here. Immigrants from those parts of the world migrated to the UK, presumably, for a better life, not to continue the sectarian hatreds commonplace in their countries of origin. The majority of the indigenous people of these Islands certainly don't want to see their towns and cities mired in religious and communalist conflict: UK Muslims should be concerned primarily about the same issues that concern everyone living in the UK, whether that be the cost of living crisis or the NHS or illegal migration, not expressing hatred for Hindus or Jews based upon overseas conflicts. I feel very sorry for any constituent who now has an independent MP pledged to put the people of Gaza before their interests as UK citizens. It's not a great advertisement for multiculturalism or immigration and will eventually and justifiably lead to the rise of parties determined to oppose them.

In totality this meddling legislation inflicted on the British people who were not asked was designed to circumvent the protection we had under the Magna Carta and Bill of Rights. If they can win six seats at the first attempt think of what they can do for the next General Election in four years! There are over 80 Parliament seats where the Muslim vote is 20% or more. The genocide in Gaza is the worst thing I’ve witnessed in my life. Even though my Labour MP is Diane Abbott who supports a ceasefire. BDS etc I couldn’t vote for her because she still represents Starmer’s Labour. I voted Green and they came second to Diane. Many people I know who support Palestine and are horrified at the Zionists withdrew support from Labour. Many people didn’t bother voting. The Labour party has changed so much under Starmer - it no longer warrants being described as the Labour Party. It no longer represents the interests of those who labour and work. Do you understand how the first past the post system works in the UK? The Labour Party has suffered for decades under it with the British electorate returning minority supported Tory governments with large majority for decades. By all means continue with your analysis about the changing political landscape but I invite you to consider the following. Muslims make up 6% of the UK population. But where they are concentrated (eg in Northern cities) and many (not all) tend to vote for Muslim candidates or Muslim causes - as is their democratic right in our system. Which means that they can affect the election outcomes in a handful of seats. Which is what happened this time around due to sentiments shared regarding the War in Gaza - which they an many took out against Labour party candidates - particularly did not support their position on the war. On the flip side there are many others who did not support the Labour Party's position on the war in Gaza, the war in Sudan (where Muslims are slaughtering African Christians), two child family support, membership of the EU and others as well. But yet they voted for the Labour Party by the millions and won a landslide majority 412 seats. The 5 seats lost were not needed. Here is how they did it : - By tailoring their policies on matters to the vast majority of the British electorate were concerned about. The war in Gaza was tops for many Muslim voters but it did not feature in the top 5 most important issues of British voters generally as per the exit poles. - They broadened their message to win over voters that traditionally voted for the Tories. No reckless spending pledges. Focus on service - The used there limited financial resources wisely by focusing on marginal areas that they could overtake the Tories in while sacrificing those areas that traditionally voted Labour (large Muslim areas were a victim of this strategy - its hard politics) - They changed the party by purging it of the the Jeremy Corbyn faction and the anti-Semites that Corby failed to address adequately All done on a reduced share of the vote - that is how our system works. So all of your analysis about reduced Muslim share of the voter for the Labour party might bring some degree of solace to those sympathetic towards Gazans, the brutal honest truth is that it is irrelevant in the overall scheme of things. The Gaza supporting candidates focused their campaign on Gaza. For example, Stephen Flynn, the SNP leader used his time in Parliament focused almost entirely on the Gaza issue. They lost 38 seats mostly to the Labour Party. Almost of their seats in Scotland. Labour party candidates focused on what they needed to get the British voters to vote for them. Now the Labour Party is the largest party in all 3 nations - England, Scotland and Wales This is something that Jeremy Corbyn never understood when he lead the Labour party to a record defeat in 2019. Those pushing the Gaza agenda might just want to reconsider their tactics going forward and seek to influence the Labour government through dialogue. Shouting slogans about complicity in genocide plays well with the activists but it is unlikely to sway this new government. Nor is it a substitute for rational dialogue.

It’s meant to foster community and was how all civilizations organized themselves according to shared morals/ethics, and put them into law. Unfortunately the petty disagreements about the nitty gritty differences between various religious systems is how religion causes more harm than good in global matters. @Azda-emina kids limbs have been blown off in Syria, Yamen, Nigeria, afganistan, Iraq, Ukraine, israel etc. That's the unfortunate cost of war. If that mattered to most people, they would make love not war. Palestine is no special unless you are biased.

@Azda-emina I don't agree. We will not get involved to any Middle Eastern issues as all Western countries are pretty self-serving. If wider war breaks out, UK or UK citizens will not be involved because of our geographical location. All our neighboring countries are friendly.
