Labour suffer some upsets to independents on pro-Gaza platforms

Labour may have won a sizeable majority but there were a few upsets.
(Subscribe: bit.ly/C4_News_Subscribe)
As they lost several former strongholds to independent candidates. Jeremy Corbyn won in Islington North. While four other candidates campaigning on pro-Gaza platforms picked up seats.

In his last election for that district he got 66.3% of the vote, his majority decreased by 17.4%. Most party leaders see a bump in there own constituency when they win a landslide, which labour didn't they only received 34% of the vote while in 2017 they got 40%. This election wasn't a landslide victory for labour, just a massive defeat for the Tories. Only a little over 55% of voters cast there ballot for the two major parties.

Don't make this about race or religion. People who were enthused by Jeremy Corbin have been told that labour does not want them and does not need them. That's why they did not increase their share of the vote from 2019. They've alienated as many people as they've gained from the tories. Those they've gained will go back to the tories once the party has reformed and become viable again. The people they've alienated won't be back.

@@TheLampini I'm saying it's not just about Palestine. It's a big part of it. It's the straw that's broken the camels back. It's the fact that for decades the left of the labour party has been abused and taken for granted. 200,000 people became members of the labour party for Corbin's policies. Starmer lied to become leader. He said he would be Corbin with better presentation. Then conducted a vicious war on his own members. The same people who elected him to power. He's betrayed the trade unions. The very people who founded the labour party. For years we've been equivocating over a split from new labour but couldn't do it because we were afraid of the tories. It's like an abusive spouse suddenly demanding a divorce. If we go back to them now we're truly pathetic. Ironically reform may have given us the space to go for it without fear. On Palestine though, you're absolutely right. My family were old labour. They were campaigning for a free Palestine since it became part of the British empire. That's how long it's been a thing that labour has cared about. It's been heart-breaking to see how working class jews have been treated by the establishment. The over-sized contribution to left wing ideology that originated from Jewish people has just been erased. One of our core principles of internationalism directly comes from the experience of Jews in Europe. The only positive though is that Palestine is bringing people together from all over the ideological and religious map.

"don't make this about race of religion" i think u will find it is actually religion. For some reason Muslims feel very connected and will follow what imams say and who to vote for. in most cases u are correct but the muslim community seems to be separate in that they have a extremely high detachment from others due to their religion beliefs and how it functions in their community from what i see.

I see Orthodox jews, Christian conservatives, Catholics, pluralist Jews, the traditional left, the far left all coming together over the same issue. People who usually hate each other with good reason finding themselves allies over a common cause. Then you have Saudi Arabia, the most extreme Wahabi Muslims who are actively defending Israel. In my town, a very white, very conservative town there was a pro Palestinian demonstration in the high street. Muslim music being played on a loudspeaker. They were met with overwhelming support. There aren't many muslims here, so how do we explain this juxtaposition? As the other guy said, this is about people who know right from wrong. Elites vs real people.

It costs them 3 or 4 seats and almost cost a couple of more but won by a very smal margin. Labour need to wake up. No more pondering to israel. I feel it will all be forgotten but maybe not. As people that are fed up of the usual 2 parties will start voting independent

@@jebbo-c1l I do not vote for my MP on international affairs unless they have abhorrent views. Reasonable people can disagree about an extremely complicated issue in Gaza and as far as I can tell Labour have advocated for a peaceful resolution while acknowledging the reprehsible October 7 attacks. Does this rise to the level of such flagrant disregard for norms, is it so immoral, that one ignores ALL domestic and local issues to vote on a singular foreign one? Our society is becoming far too sectarian

People want whatever for the country they originate from, fine, but that shouldn't come at a cost to the people of the country they choose to live in. ''This is for Palestine''? What happens in the United Kingdom should be ''For the people of the United Kingdom''. This country is being divided and weakened on a daily basis. How will ''Pro Palestine'' support benefit the average UK citizen? Will it help with the housing crisis, the financial crisis, the cost of energy crisis?

People can vote for whoever they want. Gaza is an important issue as this country is supporting genocide in gaza. Sending arms to Israel thats killing innocent unarmed Palestinians mainly children. Nobody wants to be associated with killing 38000 unarmed innocent civilians and injuring approx 100000 Palestinians. In addition to that US, UK, Germany blocked ceasefire in Gaza in the ICJ/ICC court. As well blocking Satanyahus arrests. Its IMPORTANT to voters.

But I know she was a supporter of Palestinians, which the Labour Government is not, so I expect that may have contributed to how many votes she got.
