South Korean Army's K-2 Rifle Needs to Chill Out

Ойын-сауық

The K-2 ended up in the hands of a lot of bad guys, how did that happen?! In this video we dive into the South Korean Armies primary weapon the K-2 rifle. Lets find out what are the origins of this weapon why was it made? At the end of world war 2 Korea ended up being divided along the 38th parallel into two countries one being north Korea backed by the soviet union and the other is south Korea backed by Nato.

The cold war had begun and communist east squared off against the capitalist west. Choose your side wisely! In June of 1950 the North Koreans attacked South Korea beginning the Korean war. Which would drag the major superpowers in. Eventually the war ended not far from where it started with both north and south in ruins. Sometime after the war South Korea began to look for a new rifle for their military. At the time the South Koreans had a large supply of American made weapons like the M1 Garand and M2 Carbine.
These weapons however were starting to fall behind the times. However some Korean units had received the M16 after assisting America in the Vietnam war. In 1974 they got a license from Colt to produce the M16A1 but they found that the license was too much money and as industry grew throughout South Korea the military higher ups wanted to make weapons in house and be able to mass produce and store enough rifles in case of another large scale war. In Particular President Park Chung-Hee pushed hard for self-reliance and was one of the major voices behind the creation of a South Korean rifle. He is quoted by saying “If an independent country cannot protect itself with its military, it is not an independent country.” Can you blame them though?

much like the G3/FAL, sometimes you just gotta look at a rifle and go, well, if it ain't broke, why waste money trying to fix it when we could spend that on more critical stuff....unlike the US Military who's always looking for the newest, flashiest toy they'll spend way too much on than poorly maintain with cheap knock off parts.

My grandfather was in the ROK in 1968 in Nam during the Tet offensive. He is definetely jealous of the later K2s, but he does fondly recall his rifles. He spent the Tet offensive issued with an M1 Garand, digging up landmines and laying Claymores. He spent the latter half of his time in country with an M16. He loved that thing and talks about it constantly. The M1s were made for the Americans, so they tended to have a hard time using it. As much as the enjoyed the M16, him and his buddies had a hard time with the full auto. The recoil was a bit much for them, so they would instead hold the rifle sideways and let the recoil spray the rifle from left to right when clearing roads or whatever. Don't know whether that would have actually been practical, but they were having fun.

My dad said the training manual was exactly the same as the U.S. Army's but the reps and distances were adjusted due to the smaller physical stature of Korean men at the time. So if the manual said run 3 miles the Korean manual would say run 2.5 miles and so on. He told me that they knew the 5.56 round was a tumbler pretty early. They would test fire M-16s into barrels full of empty beer cans and one round would shred half the beer cans in the barrel!

K2's folding stock system is very simplified. no locking button, just fixed with spring tension to latch of lower receiver and stock hinge. like i mention, immature handling(carelessly fold/unfold stock) cause abnormal friction between lower receiver and stock hinge when fold and unfold stock. so, softer material stock hinge is wear out itself, prevent damage to lower receiver. most of firearm repairers always stock the spare hinge for that. wear out hinge is not much a big issue when handling the rifle but they start makes noise wobbling sound when it folded condition.

I served in the ROK Marine Corps as an artillery officer from 2017~2020. K2 was my main rifle when I trained as an OCS, however my primary fire arm switched between a K1 and a K2 depending on the position I was in within the battalion. I think K2 is a great rifle, and I have seen the new K2C1 rifles with the adjustable stock and new rail systems used by the infantry guys. However the problem I had with the K2, and the problem that has not been fixed so far from my knowledge are. 1. The location of the safety. Although it is easy to set it to semi with the thumb, it is extremely difficult to manipulated back to safe. 2. The iron sights still utilize a "peep hole" system. This makes it easier to train troops to fire accurately and I think it is a system that worked well in the 80s and 90s but squinting your eyes and sticking your eye close to the sights is not only uncomfortable with your vest but also it limits your field of vision. Or just issue everybody red dots. 🙄 which most likely won't happen so at least make the rear sight a little bigger?

Great video! Thanks for shining some light on our rifles. I was in the ROKA and also used the K2. It was basically the SCAR before the SCAR.. but long stroke instead of short stroke. Performance was great and most of the malfunctions I've experienced were due to having the spent casing collector attached to the side (casings would bounce back into the action). The only negatives I experienced were with the ergos. Mainly, the safety selector was too far from the shooter's thumb. You can flick it into semi with your thumb, but after that you can't reach it without breaking your right hand grip or using your left hand. Worse if the selector is on auto because it's basically a mile away and you pretty much have to use your left hand at that point. Also, not as major of an issue but the mag release button is located a little too far away where it's just beyond the reach of your index finger. To press it, you have to break your grip on the pistol grip and kinda lean your hand over the right side of the gun to reach it. Final issue I had was with the folding buttstock. I'm sure it was fine when the rifle was new, but mine was old and the hinge had quite a lot of play. Really hard to do precision shooting when your stock jiggles. Overall though, I think with a few updates the base rifle is still viable as a general issue infantry weapon. Reliable and intuitive to use. I'm trying to get one here in the states but they are so damn expensive.

I used the k2c1 when I was in the ROK army and I have to say, the folding stock was such an amazing feature to have when entering and exiting vehicles. The only problem was that people would often forget to clean and take care of the folding hinge which made it difficult to fold the stock. You would have to place the rifle in your arms in a certain way and give it a nice smack to fold/unfold it. Another iffy part about the rifle would be the fire selector’s placement. It’s somewhat far out for most peoples thumb reach which can become somewhat of an issue (ROKSEAL/Ken Rhee made a video about this). Overall I personally loved the rifle. Shooting felt great, the c1 variant had a lot of rail space, and it has this special charm to it that calls you.

I’m in the U.S. Army and was stationed in the ROK from 2018-2020. I was able to use the K2 in a couple of exercises with the ROK Army, including a force on force small unit tactics competition that had competitors from a ROK Army infantry and MP unit, ROK Air Force MPs, ROK Navy counter terrorism unit, a local police SWAT team, and our team of POGs (ATC and chaplains assistants mainly). We placed 3rd for anyone curious. My only complaint of the K2 was with the small bag they issued with the rifle to catch brass. If it filled up it would cause issues with ejection, and you had to take extra time to open and clear the bag in order to clear a malfunction (although I only had 1 the whole time I used it and it was due to the bag being full). That being said it made cleaning up the brass super easy as there was no need to do so

Thank you for reviewing our standard issued rifle! I served as an Korean Airforce military police (2018~2020). Here are my opinions on the firearms that i used during my service. K2 during the boot camp: K2 durability really stands out, it fired smoothly after crawling in dirts. For me it's weight was not too bad, once i got used to its weight. Accuracy--> very good Ironsight --> easy Very easy to dissemble and assemble, and thus it is easy to clean. The down side: Although the buttstock was folderble, it did not have length adjustment feature and folded buttstock was loose, which made annoying clanking noices while marching. During my service: K2C1 when i disembled it for cleaning, it's inside was exactly same as the K2. It was slightly heavier due to it's picatinny rail the slight addition of weight was quite noticeable. My K2C1 came with vertical grip and i did not like it because my wrist felt uncomfy. Buttstock: sheesh, it was folderble and it had a length adjustment function was able to shoot more comfortably, but folding stock was a bit of struggle because it was stiff af. its heavier weight and adjustable buttstock gave more control while firing and thus better accuracy. M16 M203 I was the next in line to receive the M203 gunner position. it looked cool af but also heavy af. Recoil and accuracy was about the same as K2. Non-foldable buttstock sucked. I had to get use to its Charging handle position, but sound of cocking handle was very addicting. I like the grip. Slightly more S&W 10M 2inch version (gas and rubber bullets) : Trash because it old and poorly maintained. Sometimes it did not fire because either the bullet was old or the gun itself was so ancient that hammer did not carry enough power and it was very awkward for both I and officers.

This is amazing research done Only thing you are missing out are newest variants such as K2C1 K2C1 is the current mass production variant of K2, and it has adjustable stock (similar to M4), and rails on the body + handle as a default. The Korean military is supplying in tens of thousands for frontier troops, but not sure if they will replace entire K2 with K2C1, or will design new rifle (most likely). However, the grenadiers still use K2 for K201 attachment set (not sure if they will produce new K201, probably go along with the new rifle).

Folding stock was god send since being combat engineer forced me to crawl under so many different places to fix and install equipment with rifle hanging on my back with strap. Just letting you know, technically, Korean War did not end. North Korea and South Korea are technically still at war. We signed a siegefire agreement in 1957, not a peace agreement. That is why both North and South Korean army still rely on conscription Armed force.

There's a weird issue with the 3-round burst fire: if the weapon runs out of ammo before the 3 rounds have fired, when you switch mags, it will fire the remainder of that burst when you next fire as the mechanism doesn't reset. It is nicely made though, not exceptional, just a workhorse rifle.

With the proliferation of body armour they can either go with the known calibers 7,62x51, .338NM or the version of the 6,8 mm that is chosen by the US army. Some of the footage actually shows the K1A, which is a direct impingement carbine despite looking like a scaled down version of the K2. And I think that M16A1 is actually a M16A2. Fellow Koreans who have served in the ROK often complained that the K2 has a stronger recoil and was harder to shoot than the M16A1, but that criticism should also be paired with the fact that the grand majority of these soldiers are conscripts in a country where guns are banned, and the only other rifle they could compare the K2 would be the M16A1.

Well known problem. 1. Not quite ergonomic selector, unlike AR-15 changing safe to fire position is quite difficult, you need special technique or optional pistol grip to change modes like AR-15 2. Charging handle breaks unexpectedly. According to manufacturer, They thought it is better break than stuck to bolt carrier. So you always consider breaking of charging handle and carry spare parts. 3. In case of K2C1(rail adopted improved K-2) front sight interfere with Low Power Variable Optic recently issuing so you have to attach the scope slightly frontward to get clear view. This problem was anticipated and manufacturer tried to add flip function but rumor says one stubborn ROK army colonel insisted that will be weak point in bayonet fighting and because of him, the improvement canceled.

Everything you said is true, but any conflict has larger implications than just a straight up ground battle. 1)Seoul is located very close to the border. If things were to kick off, NK would immediate fire their pre-aimed artillery at the city. SK doesn't want any civilian casualties. 2) Would China get involved? Likely because NK is a buffer between China and the West. A fight with the Chinese would be a difficult one lasting for a while likely involving many global powers. 3) When SK does win, what do you do with NK's starving citizens? SK would be responsible for taking care of these starving millions (both in terms of education, infrastructure rebuilding, and healthcare). all in all, a small misinterpretation or overreaction could have huge consequences.

Thanks for showing the K2 some love. I heart piston guns.

I appreciate this video for selfish reasons. I own a Max 2 which is the K2 civilian version and it’s one of my favorite rifles.

Have the pre-ban folder version and it's a straight and clean shooting rifle. Well built. Great iron sights. You can tell a lot of thought went into the design to make it simple yet effective and to capitalize on commonality through interchangeability with some M-16 parts. Mine is fitted with an EoTech holo sight fitted to a Stormwerkz rail. Getting harder to find this awesome and accurate AR/AK hybrid, so no intention of ever parting with it!

Thanks man~~! My head is still swelling at how smart I was to buy my brothers K2 - took some guff from my buddies (oh, made some money so I bought some brand new friends) for shooting the ":Woooooooooooooo" that is until we started shooting 3-gun. I was knocking down steel poppers at 200 yards (I was young = eyes were good) and when we went onto the school bus, I could take the baddies from the door due to the longer sight radius with the stock folded. I also worked with this company in the Middle and Far East, and tried like mad to get the import license. Alas, none of the dunderkoffs would even look at it then - one just sold on Gunbroker for ~ 3400$. Kimshee anyone? Keep it up!
