South Korean New MOST POWERFUL Tank Shocked The World

In 1995, the South Korean Agency for Defence Development was given the task of developing a modern armoured fighting vehicle based upon state-of-the-art domestic technologies. The objective of this development program was to further modernise the South Korean army, despite the superior capability of existing K1 and K1A1. So along came the K2 Black Panther which is, according to the Guinness World Records organisation, the most expensive tank in the world at $8.5 million dollars. This is for a good reason though, the K2 has a number of features that makes it incredibly capable and quite deadly on the battlefield. In this video we are going to take a closer look at it’s features and why it costs quite so much.

What does the K-2 have to do with the T-80? K-2 is based on Leclerc and it has almost all Leclerc construction solutions, such as: high hydropneumatic suspension (T-80 has very low 180mm ordinary torsion bars), diesel engine (T-80 has a turbine), quick-change powerpack (T-80 has a separate transmission and engine ), modular replaceable armor (T-80 has non-interchangeable with reactive additive), extended 120mm gun (T-80 has Soviet 125mm), automatic from turret niche (T-80 has all ammo in the hull), two-pin rubberized tracks (T-80 single-pin not rubberized), hydrostatic transmission (T-80 has a manual hydraulic planetary), engine 1500 HP (T-80 has 1250 HP), weight about 55 tons (T-80 about 46 tons), extended turret with ammunition niche (T-80 has a short turret with all the ammunition around the crew in the hull) etc. It literally looks as if someone analyzing the T-80 came to the conclusion how not to design a tank and designed everything possible the other way around.

K-2 has hydropneumatic suspension with regulated ground clerance. As for coaxial MG - last ISW report about the Russia-Ukraine war stated only around 20% of tanks combat is tank vs. tank and 80% is tank vs. infantry. So removing coaxial is probably not so obvious. On the other hand K-2 is factory ready to accomodate 140mm gun instead of current 120mm - it may be at cost of coaxial.

Leclerc is great, but Leopard 2 and Abrams are just older designs - they could modernize many parts still making formidable tanks, but some technical solutions can't be modernised. I.e. both Abrams M1A2 SepV3 and Leopard 2 A7V use old conventional torsion bars suspension, when they were being designed regulated hydropneumatic suspension wasn't mature enough etc. Similar situation with modularity of the armor. Far more modern design simply has natural design advantages over 1980s Leopard and Abrams. Even worse are 1960s design like T-64/T-72/T-80/T-90, which are modernised Soviet 1960s T-64/72, even way more outdated than Leopard 2 and Abrams design.

T-90s, based on 1960s Soviet designs, without situational awareness, with small mass/weak armor, without active protection systems, with all amunition stored around the crew - yes, they are outdated coffins. Modern tanks are still a core of mechanized elements.

All it takes one Russian tank mine and ka-boom, there your $8.5 million Korean tank goes.

It’s basically German tank built by Koreans with a license for gun and motor imported from Germany. That is the best way to save money and time. I heard Poland bought 100 of this tank from South Korea.

You are so full of misconception. It's Korean built, Korean designed tank. The gun and engine were indeed usedto be German-lincense built until about 10 years ago, but since have been replaced by indigenous Korean-designed ones. Also Poland is buying 1,000 K2s, not 100.
