South Ireland: Waterford to the Ring of Kerry

Rick Steves' Europe Travel Guide © 2002 | We find the icons of Ireland strewn along its fascinating south coast: Waterford's much-loved crystal factory, the Kennedy family homestead, the Dunbrody Famine Ship, and Kinsale's star-shaped fortresses. After kissing the Blarney Stone, we visit elegant Muckross House. Then we savor the scenic charms of the Emerald Isle by driving the Ring of Kerry. #ricksteves #ricksteveseurope #ireland

I`m English, and I love Ireland. I once lived in Kilkenny and whilst there explored practically the whole Country. Its a beautiful place that one should not leave un-visited whilst on life`s sojourn. I would urge anyone visiting Western Europe not to omit it. It is an exceptionally rare place. It would not broke well with me to think that I might have seen Ireland already for the last time. I want to go again.... But I shall always want to go again. Apart from that, it produces the best damn Whiskey in the world - closely followed by Scotland. Here`s to Ireland.

Yes, that sounds inspiring, Steve DL. I've been on holiday in Ireland, Fanore on the West Coast Galway I believe. It was the year 1989. And now, 20 years later, I want to go and visit Ireland again, the Atlantic Ocean's coast, and explore it, for a home to live one day and grow old. There's magic in the air, the land, the water and the fires in woodstoves. I remember visiting a pub and at 12 pm the National Anthem was sung, with us all standing up with our hand on our heart. Very touching.

I’m Irish. We’ve managed to trace back to Waterford which is why i am watching this. Only 1 brother left Ireland for America. The other 5 remained in Ireland. Makes me wonder if I have relatives still there. I ended up marrying an Irish man from Dublin a Kelly lol. Pure chance ? Who knows. My grandpa desperately wanted to return to Ireland before he died but never made it. One day I will make it to Ireland for him.

@@dominiccrimmings6925 well for arguments sake, lets take the probability that her father, perhaps was in his 70s, he could have had brothers who were older. They could have joined WWII, throwing large assumptions. Possibly, none fathered children. Possibly if they were sisters, married, and then themselves moved to another country. Statistically speaking, the chances are slim that any of the above happened, but who knows. So, dense? No, unsure? Yes.

Two points of interest overlooked. Waterford: The Times Square New Years crystal ball is made in the Waterford Glass Factory. Cobh: There's a monument there to Annie Moore and her 2 little brothers, and a duplicate at Ellis Island. The three were the first immigrants to set foot on Ellis Island in 1892.

Rick Steve is one of the great travel guides, who's full of info. And I'm sure he know's more about the plight then he lets on on his video's. He is of Irish heritage after all, to my knowledge. One of the few guide's to bring you the peoples real everyday lives, heritage, history, pride, and country's natural beauty's. Just before watching this video, I watched another. Can't even tell you how offended I was from that video. Narrator was English, miss informed, horrible pronunciation of Gaelic and emphasized more on the English nobles that colonized and took over the lives of the Irish, then of the truth of the hearts of real Irish people. Rick Steve gives a good look at real cultural life in the places we like to travel, I am very thankful for it. It is good to read that many of you commenting know true Irish history, but this is a travel video after all. I for one, think this video gives the best of both beauty and truth. Huge fan, Rick Steves! I'll see if I can go back and get the name of that video, and reply it's name.

His ex wife Anne, as he makes mention of within this video, is of Irish ancestry. They have 2 children, a daughter and a son. Their son, is also involved in the travel industry. I believe he's also doing travel or tour guide vlogs, etc;. He's very good, just like his Father & if interested, you can find out his name and check him out.

a beautiful video........ but its important to know that the so called Irish famine was really an orchestrated starvation by the english occupation they exported beef grains etc to feed their armies around the world in other countries they held and left the peasant Irish who were highly dependant on the potato crop to die when the potato blight struck

‘Orchestrated’ it was not - they didn’t introduce the blight, just - ‘just’ - reacted inhumanely when it did, for the most part. I’m looking out at a famine causeway built by the local landowner at the time to ensure that people here didn’t starve, for example, which close to 200 years later is still in use.

Wonderful video showing the beauty that is Ireland, its history & its people. Yes it is several years old but it captures the magic. My regret is although married for almost forty years to an incredible woman whose family came from Tipperary ( they go back generations to the days of the Huguenots & probably before), is that I have never had the opportunity to visit, maybe one day ? Ahh, the forty shades of green - stunning.

I am very surprised that when they mentioned the Great Famine nothing at all was mentioned to the fact that the Irish people were forced into starvation by the British Master. Only the potatoes has the blight but the rest of the crops which Ireland produces everything was to be sent to Britain. The Queen was mentioned but nothing to the horrible treatment to the local population by the British masters. It reminds me of the Cowboys movies where the Indians were bad and cowboys were good.
