Dublin and Mystical Side Trips

Rick Steves' Europe Travel Guide | Dublin's story is of feast and famine - from its 18th-century Golden Age to its 20th-century struggles for independence to its boomtime today. We explore the town's foreboding castle and patriotic jail, plus Trinity College with its Book of Kells. Later we party in Temple Bar, awash in Celtic music and Guinness. We side-trip to the prehistoric necropolis of Newgrange and the medieval monastery at Glendalough, deep in the scenic Wicklow Mountains. © 2002 Rick Steves' Europe #ricksteves #ricksteveseurope #ireland

Canada sent a ship from Toronto during the potato famine to help the Irish. That same boat is still there as museum in Dublin. A Canadian flag flies proudly on their government building til this day. I had the awesome opportunity to see this on my trip to Ireland in 2018. As usual really nice tour Rick !

Thank you Rick. We visited Ireland this month and truly enjoyed every minute there. Your videos inspired and informed us. We loved Ireland, its people and natural beauty. Public transportation was efficient, reliable, and cheap. We stayed there for ten days and did not need a car. Galway and Sligo were particularly lovely, but we also liked Dublin. Looking forward to a round two soon. Thank you Irish people. You truly have a heaven on Earth.

Even as a Brit, I find the memorial to where the Easter Rising very moving. Britain very much paid the price for treating Ireland so badly over the years. The wording of a British built memorial on the Antrim Coast road for the Potato Famine is case in point: "(...) Britannia gave her bounty with her tears and bear this record, though in phrases crude, of England's love and Ireland's gratitude," The wording on that controversial memorial to say the least paints a different picture of Irish history. One that whitewashes what actually happened, London showed their "love" for Ireland by doing absolutely nothing to help when the potato crops failed year after year. To make matters worse, they insisted on the Irish exporting other crops that could have eased the worst effects of the lack of potatoes for the population that depended on it (such as grain)

I'm also half Irish on my dad's side! My paternal grandmother and both of my aunts were and still are redheads. Sadly, I neither have green eyes nor am I a redhead. I have blonde hair and blue eyes courtesy of my mom's Dutch ancestry. Though I lack these traits, I still have one trait that sticks out like the Ring of Kerry: a stubborn attitude and a temper to match! You back this lass into a corner and I'll come out swinging!

Go to Cork City and tour the South East Coast, especially the Rebel battle towns such as Wexford and Enniscorthy. The film "Brooklyn" was filmed partly in Enniscorthy, but it is also a famous battleground on Vinegar Hill where many Irish lads gave their lives for a Free Ireland. Brooklyn is a fun and funny ficticous film which tells a story which takes place in both Ireland & New York.

This video, as well as all others, is very much appreciated. Many thanks to Rick Steves & his team. I was in Dublin and Kilkenny last month, and still enjoy this video a great deal, though. On that trip, I learned that the Irish pronounce "TH" as "T". So, at 11:12 min, the tour guide pronounces, "There are TREE leaves and one stem", but actually, she means, "There are THREE leaves ...". For the number 33, Irish people pronounce "Ter-ti Tree." No joking! That is so cute of them.

    That's because they mix the English and Irish languages together. THREE leaves comes from the Irish a trí (3). A haon, a dó, a trí, a ceathair. A hay-n, a doh, a tree, a kya-her = 1, 2, 3, 4 etc.

When I visited Ireland with a tour group in April 2004 we got to see The Book of Kells at Trinity College. It is the national treasure of Ireland. The Book of Kells is kept in a room that is darkened for preservation purposes. If memory serves me correctly one page of the book is turned each day.

Is this really 2002? It's nice to see a historical chapter in Ireland's past but 16 years on there so much change in this isle.

I was told by an Irish man in Dublin that drunk husbands used to go into the wrong houses and therefore the wrong beds and so the doors were painted different colours to help 'em find their proper beds...and wives.

MsAnne Trophy that probably wouldn’t bother my ex husband, somehow our door could be bright red and he would still find the wrong house, but that’s alright, let him be someone else’s concern for a night or 2! 😂😂😂😂😂

I met him in Corte Madera, California just North of San Francisco (Marin County) where he gave a talk & showed a video at a bookstore. He had been on a trip to Iran. It was very interesting. He is much more political in person. When the Persians (Iran used to be Persia) found out he was American, everyone wanted to talk to him. They are very friendly in spite of huge murals on high walls declaring, "Death to America!" The average Persian on the street has no ill will to Americans. They understand that the people are not the government. You can see his trip to Iran on You Tube.
