The muffaletta is meant to feed a family or provide 4 meals. Developed by Italian immigrants to Louisiana.

Shrimp Po’boys in Louisiana are the best. The Muffulettas with the olive salad from the Central Grocery on Decatur Street in New Orleans are the goat. Grabbed a muffuletta, a cold bottle of root beer and sat by the Mississippi River stuffing my face. Too bad I live in Illinois! Need to get back to New Orleans. In all fairness, Chicago is a great food city too but there’s something about New Orleans.

Red Beans & Rice are AMAZING! SO, SO easy to fix. Red Kidney Beans(You can use fresh or canned. If fresh, soak in water over night.) Add: -Andouille Sausage(Hot smoke sausage if you can't get Andouille) -At least one whole onion cut into 1/8ths -Salt, pepper, garlic. - Cook slow for a couple of hours until the Beans just start to break down Into a Beans, pasty goodness -Cook 1-2 Cups of White Rice. -Add Rice and Red Beans in your favorite bowl. -Add Jalapeños to your bowl if you like -Texas Pete hot sauce to taste. Serve with Southern Sweet Tea: Sweet Tea: In a quart pan on your stove put: -Water -6 Tea Bags -2 Cups(yes Cups) of Sugar. THEN TURN ON THE HEAT... this allows the Sugar on the bottom of pan to caramelize. Bring to a low boil and let sit for 2 hours. -Fill a 1 Gallon Pitcher 1/2 way with ice. Pour Tea into Ice. -Add Ice to fill 1 Gallon pitcher -Slice 1/2 a lemon and add in the summer.. This is my Great,Great, Great Geandmothers recipe... Rick Charleston SC

The olive tapinade in the muffaletta is awesome. The spice comes from putting cayenne pepper in the breading. Shrimp poboys are pretty easy to find outside of New Orleans, in any coastal town.

The 'debris' is what is left over in the pots when boiling chunks of beef for sandwiches. It's all the meat that has cooked into the natural gravy the meat makes and it's really good.

The French bread is what makes a po-boy sandwich. The red beans are made with red kidney beans and are a traditional Monday meal. We use the ham bone from Sunday’s dinner to cook down with the beans. And is served with rice and cornbread. My favorite po-boy is a messy roast beef. Where the gravy mixes with the mayo and drips when the bread can’t hold any more of the juices. Or a hot ham and cheese. Where the ham and cheese is grilled and served with lettuce and tomato. Or a smoked sausage or fried catfish or shrimp or fried oyster or…, DAMN now I have to go get a poboy tomorrow.

Muffaletta (which refers to the style of bread) - Genoa salami, ham, Emmental cheese, Provolone cheese, mortadella, more Genoa salami and topped with olive salad. The Po’boy bread is equally important. Leidenheimer or Gendusa Bakery is a must. Po’boys come dressed - mayo, lettuce, tomatoes, pickles.

Po Boy, Hero, Grinder and a Submarine sandwich also called a Sub are all the same thing. It depends what park of the country your in. I'm here in N.Y., so we call it a sub sandwich because the roll is shaped like submarine. The bread is really what makes the sub taste good. If you have bread that is too dry or too dense or too crusty and flakey, it will take away the enjoyment in eating it. The sub should be soft and easy to bite through because the sandwiches are so thick. Last thing you need is a dislocated jaw from trying to bite through it. What I prefer is the roll be made of Italian bread. Soft inside and a bit of crunch on the outside. In America these are also fast food and there a number of chain restaurants around the country.

When we say red beans, we mean pinto beans, slow cooked with onions and some type of meat like smoked ham, bacon, sausage, or smoked ham hock. Baked beans are totally different.

It traditionally consists of meat, which is usually roast beef, chicken fingers, or fried seafood such as shrimp, crawfish, fish, oysters, or crab. The meat is served in New Orleans French bread, known for its crisp crust and fluffy center. Traditionally with a Remoulade Sauce.

Yes. The debris fries are exactly that, except...there is also the meat that's cooked to where it's falling apart. Red beans usually has smoked sausage but may also have a smoked meat called tasso (or even a pickled pork, although this is unusual nowadays) Should definitely not leave off the muffuletta. They are really good.

My favorites are Soft Shell Crab Po Boys and Oyster Po Boys! I also love gravy and fries. Every time I cook and have leftover gravy, I put it in a vacuum sealed bag in the freezer. In Canada, they call the dish Poutine! I also put cheddar cheese curds on top of the French Fries before I add the hot gravy! This is possibly French Bread ... not like loaf bread.

The whole key to the muffaletta sandwich is the OLIVE SALAD that they use. What to put in your olive salad, how to make it, etc. is the source of a religious war in food in Louisiana! So and so does the best muffaletta because they have xxx in their olive salad! That was a horrible muff-- it barely had any olive salad at all!! etc. I think it may be the best sandwich ever created.

One of the other original Po Boys was fried oysters. The mufalata is a New Orleans, Italian specialty. If the put everything from that and put it on a long roll like the po boy you'd say yes to it also, so don't let the bread scare you.

I agree with you, although I’ve never been to New Orleans. (One day I’ll get in the car and go.) The Muffuletta never impressed me, and I think mainly because I’m not a big eater. Just seems like a crazy over-sized “regular” sandwich. But I’m sure its history and the tradition is fascinating. Like at one time, maybe people ordered this to feed a family of 4 to 6! Makes more sense than buying 4 to 6 wimpy little sandwiches.

The sandwiches are good beyond just the size, but it is meant to be shared by 4 people like a pizza. The taste almost reminds me of pizza. The olive salad makes it. I didn't like olives originally, and when my mom would make these sandwiches, I'd have her put none on my piece. Then there was one social situation where I didn't want to look annoyingly picky and ate it as is, and I hated myself for missing out. The olive salad is an important part.
