Actually the reason why cliff stopped using the rick was because of malfunctions caused by too many modifications. Cliff liked the bright rick tone but he modified it by (rickenbacker purists look away) replacing the two stock pickups and adding a guitar pickup on the bridge of the bass that was activated by a switch. He made the switch to the aria pro and was eventually endorsed by them!

The actual bridge pickup was replaced with a J pickup and the neck pickup replaced with a Gibson muckraker humbucker. I've seen a Fender Jazz bass modded with mudraker humbucker replacing the neck pickup as a budget version of the Cliff Burton Ricky and thought it sounded pretty good.

Hit the front of your amp hard, dime the gain, play hard. Dengler: Jazz bass, favour the neck pickup. Play with a pick. No effects. Think he generally played quite light strings and rarely changed them. Apparently not very interested in his equipment beyond the plainest functionality.

Loving all the comments about using an air guitar to achieve the And Justice For All sounds! Well funny! On a serious note I still maintain hearing Cliff Burton's bass live is the best bass sound I have ever heard. Of course purely personal to me but I just loved it and (as yet) have never heard any better and count myself lucky I managed to see him live.

Regarding Cliff, there was some misinformation: Joined ‘82, played on Kill ‘Em All (1983), Ride The Lightning (1984) and Master Of Puppets (1986), died in 1987 in a buss accident in Sweden. He used a mid 70s BurgundyGlo Rickenbacker loaded with a Gibson mudbucker, Seymour Duncan hot stack J and a hot Seymour Duncan Strat pickup under the bridge in place of the string mutes. He later switched to the Aria Pro II due to electrical malfunctions in the Rick after all his modifications. He used various amps, most notably Sunn O))) and Mesa Boogie, and his pedal board most famously featured a Morley power fuzz wah, a TS808, Biff Muff Pi and a CS-2

Sound Like Metallica (Bass) = Get a Kemper On a side note: Cliff's Rickenbacker was reportedly very heavily Modified. He changed pick-ups and even had an additional guitar pick-up somewhere in the bridge area.

You guys missed out the mods he put into the rickenbacker he had mudbucker style pick up in the neck and a jazz style pickup at the bridge he also put a guitar pick up under the bridge it was thanks to these mods that the bass finally gave up the ghost P. S. The technique cliff use was far closer to the bridge do love video though you still cliffs stuff really well

I really hope this side of things doesn't end up in the same hole as the guitar "Sound Like" where they keep trying to replicate the same boring tones over and over again, and failing at the ones that are actually somewhat unique and warrant an actual video. As a bass player I feel this series has a dangerous possibility of getting stale fast, so please lads, pick the sounds well, even if it means more infrequent episodes. Thanks

Robert Trujillo is a goddamn monster on Bass. Highly versatile and basically perfect rhythm, I've legit never seen the dude mess up live unless it was him trying to crab walk. What made Cliff Burton so amazing was his versatility is musical styles from Blues, Jazz, Classical, Rock, and of course metal. I LOVE his Chorus work on the albums RTL and MOP, you can tell he didn't play to a metronome and was very clearly free-styling in the choruses, look specifically at Creeping Death to see what I mean, it's such a tragedy to have lost him so early and before he could even peak as a musician. He knew when to go hard and when to dial it back(Look at the verse riff of Master Of Puppets and Battery) And goddamn Jason's Newsted's stage presence is hardly rivaled even to this day. The dude sounded like the Devil on top of being a very consistent player.

11:25 AFAIK Roger Sadowsky's shop is based in NYC, and have a Japanese line of instruments called Metro... Besides Warwick, the first famous "turbo-Fender" German brand coming to my mind is Sandberg, and they can look similar-ish. Funny story is there was an article on Bass Player circa 1996 when he was talking about his Sadowsky basses, saying that he bought a stock of 8 or so, made waterproof for him (he said he sweated a lot) and if memory serves me well he mentioned testing them immerging them into a pool of water, lol 😆 Anyway, what's curious is that he also had a trusted vintage specs P bass (58/59?) that made it to a lot of recording sessions for the Load/Reload era. You can spot an old sunburst P in studio footage from around November 95.

Cliff Burton and "Anesthesia (PullingTeeth)" in particular is the reason I am a bass player today. Master of Puppets is a master class with regards to the bass. Cliff was amazing. Jason Newsted is great too. I liked Trujillo with Suicidal Tendencies, but not so much with Metallica. Also I am glad you are doing Sounds Like for the bass. Why should Rabea and Matt have all the fun?
