It sounds cliche to say that tone is in the fingers, but when it comes to Knopfler, it's 99% true.

Well it is for him more than others because of his picking style and just overall hand-skill.

He didn't work in the shop... he was visiting the shop, in New York, and overheard one of the staff watching MTV and saying those iconic lines. He tells the tale on a Parkinson's interview...

I love the irony. Guy griping about rockstar making money. Behind him, is a rockstar, writing down his gripings, to make one of the most iconic rock songs ever. Which will no doubt be playing on those same tvs later that year, and he will probably be saying the same things about the song written with his lyrics.

Mark Knopfler is THE reason I picked up the guitar as a kid, and even now in my 30's still makes me want to work even harder on my finger picking technique, still prefer a plectrum. Love the video guys.

Another video to prove that Knopfler's sound is the most underrated in the world. People start thinking it's easy. Then they start thinking it's possible to replicate it easily. Then they record a video to say they have succeeded. And then they fail so miserably that they realise the only easy thing about the whole process is that: to fail.

So happy that you finally did one on Mark Knopfler!!! Thanks dudes. 😃😃😊😊😉😉
Every song on the first Dire Straits album is a winner. Water of Love is my favorite song by them.
fantastic effort! I grew up on this stuff. Telegraph Road and Making Movies. I have been in love with that Knopfler sound for 35 years. Now its all La Dispute and Royal Blood....but I'm still here.
Thanks for this one. Love Mark Knopfler. I'm new to electrics, been an acoustic folky finger picker all my life. My first fender is a lone star, and I was looking for recs on a gain/compression pedal when I stumbled on this vid. Great series and very helpful education.
BB King would be challenging. I like this format/premise/theme, and enjoyed you guys and your apparent rapoire. Keep them coming.

I miss when you guys walked through Anderton's to get the gear. Great job though! Its been a while since my last Mark Knopfler binge so I'm going to do that now. I'd love to see Rabea pull off that dumb riff from Electric Wizard- Dopethrone. SUPER bassy and insane. Otherwise, sounds like Steve Howe? I just want to see Rabea pull off some of his licks and solos... And if I was president of the universe, I'd make Toska cover some Yes.

Looks like we have the same dreams then. Toska and Yes are two of my favourite bands.
Congratulations guys, once again this goes to prive how much tone is in the hands of the player, and Bea did a great job coming real close to the legend that Mark is. And a very nice sounding rig overall. Thanks guys !
You guys are AWESOME to watch! Love the videos, and the gear talk. Keep up the great work! 👍👍
holy crap! they're back already?! that musta been one wicked fast plane! xD

ohy god! i cannot tell you how grateful i am for this! i (and Im sure many others did) requested this many moons ago, and here it is! Thank you so much. As always, great job guys. You nailed it!
hav watched all of ya sounds like vids and just wanted to say they are all awsome! to my ears they sound so close its unreal! and hats of to you for the playin, you are one hell of a guitarist \m/...after 25 years of playin guitar I had a stroke 3 years ago loosing my muscle memory and unable to play. I now hav to learn all over again. doh. but people like you inspire me to get back on it again, cheers for that and keep em comming guys :)
If my parents told me that's how I reacted to Dire Straits and in particular the guitar solos, I would absolutely style my guitar technique after the great Mark Knopfler. There's clearly a natural connection. Pretty cool.
Gotta hand it to you guys, takes stones to even try sounding like Knopfler. Always cited as one of my top five favorite guitarists. This was a fun one =)
Excellent work guys, loving the series, keep it up.

Yes, on the recording its a 59 Les Paul, and the Wah is close to the treble(!) not with the tone rolled off. If it gets too sharp, they ougtha roll the tone off on the guitar instead.
Haven't even watched the video yet. Already liked because I love this guitarist so much
Thank you,!You guys Soo Rock!..Mark Knoplfer got me to Slow down and Listen to 'FEEL'..instead of a thousand thoughtless notes a minute.. that the 80's was pandemic of..True story ..Mark was asked back then why he didnt play Fast like everyone else?..he replied.."Well Because I can't really"....So honest..so glad he wrote and played the Coolest and Thought Provoking Timeless Songs we Still Love Today!..Thanks again Rabea and Matt!!:) Peace!..
Well... this just proves that I will never be able to sound like Mark Knopfler no matter what I spend lol I give you a lot of credit for trying the harder stuff, like Brothers in Arms (deceptively not simple to play. He put a lot of feeling in that one)
@mikearkous8379

Michael Lloyd tone comes from the hand and learning his phrasing. Mark has such amazing dynamics. I have been studying his style for years. I can get his Les Paul tone on a Roland cube for brothers in arms and money for nothing I can get his assault and sound with the same set up it's all about adjusting tone knobs and feeling the song
Do a sounds like for EVH. Early VH1 "Brown Sound" tones (Eruption, You Really Got Me, Jamie's Crying etc). I wouldn't mind having a U2/The Edge either.
You guys are doing a great show! Really enjoying them.
Thanks guys. What wonderful tone(s)
Anyone else miss the running around the shop looking for gear part ? Always thought of it as a big part of the fun on these videos.
Good tone. really enjoyed that. Knopfler is a bit of a god.
Well done boys, I always enjoy these segments. Mark Knopfler is one of my favorites and a true original.
Love it ! I requested this one before, thanks for making it !
Would love to see a 'sound like *insert death metal band here* without busting the bank' or so but I guess that's not entirely up your alley. Maybe a 'how to djent without busting the bank'? At least that would sell in today's market :D

Love your guitar playing.Great feel.Hope to see you do more vids

Still a bit expensive. I'd say ML3 Modern might be a bit more realistic, especially since they used it quite a bit for the recording of the Catalyst EP. Ghost Fret is awesome, don't get me wrong but I think they could get quite close for just that extra bit cheaper, maybe get an RD1 with that bit left over.

that's gonna be a challenge, cos he has signature strats and has used a tele on on song, and also used gibson from time to time as he recorded most of Cliffs of Dover on an ES335 and occasionally used a les paul and in 2006 did Cliffs of Dover on an SG his amps are black face fenders for his cleans and marshall super leads for the dirt and now he has a dumble head to go with them pedals looks complicated but it can be broken down like this: two Catalinbread Belle Epoch pedals for a dry and lead delay, a Catalinbread Echo Rec to get an Echoplex sort of sound, an Ibanez T808 for some of the boost, a TC stereo chorus/flanger, an EHX Memory Man which is a staple sound for his delay, his own signature fuzz face by dunlop, a wah pedal which he hardly ever touches and the most essential pedal which is the Tube Driver which gets that violin like sound when paired with the fuzz face if you can find a good rig that'll sound like him good luck, but it's not gonna be easy

Great video! Keep e'm coming guy's. I think you got about as close as someone can get to the Brothers in Arms tone without actually having Mark Knopfler's gear and hands. Great tip about rolling off the tone on the guitar and increasing the treble on the drive pedal. I've been playing for many years and never thought about doing that. It's so simple yet....LOL....just goes to prove that an old dog like me CAN learn new tricks!
Very nice Knopfler-esque tones! He has always been one of my favorite guitarists of all time. He can speak volumes with his musical phrases. If you want to try something very different, how about a 'Sound Like: Steve Howe' (of Yes). He is another of my all-time favorite guitarists.

The source for Money for Nothing wasn't someone he met at work when he was young -- MTV was only founded in 1981. It was some "meathead", as he called him, in a shop some time in the 80s. The song was recorded on a Les Paul, not a Strat and the rhythm parts on Sultans (5:18) and all the songs on the first two albums were by his brother, David Knopfler.
even the mighty masaaad struggles with the might of the knopfler riff, still far better than I could ever do hahaha
