Sound Design with Lloyd Puckitt

This week we spoke with Lloyd Puckitt, the sound designer for the Santa Clara Vanguard Drum and Bugle Corps. Earlier in his career, Lloyd worked as a recording engineer for acts including Depeche Mode, Erasure, Mathew Sweet, Madonna, and earned platinum records with Vitamin C and Fuel.
In the late 90s, as the business side of the music industry went through some significant changes, Lloyd returned to the education and artistic side of music. Lloyd is now a sound designer and an education artist for Innovative Percussion, Evans Drumheads, Planet Waves, and Dynasty Percussion.

Wow! Used to just go out on the field, march the steps, play and done. This was cool, a real look into the now extensive equipment and management of a show. Lloyd is super knowledgeable and experienced!

@@LearnLightAndSoundSessions LOL! At the time (15 - high school), trumpet and baritone. Sucked at it for a year, and they played these awful old people songs. Went on to crazy nuts prog rock electric bass playing. Now, they got cool stuff, and play cool songs. Yeah, I was that "attitude" kid. :)

Love seeing these shows. Two of my daughter march at their High School. Some of those from our guard, and have come to help on technique, are in the guards for The Cadets from Pennsylvania, the Boston Crusaders, and the Cavaliers. Good luck to Santa Clara Vanguard this season!

Interesting glimpse into a whole world of audio I know nothing about! (If he ever wants to put up a video talking about his experience working with Vince Clarke (one of the creators of Depeche Mode (left after 1st album), half of Yazoo (Yaz in the US) and half of Erasure - a synth innovator and virtuoso) I'd certainly watch it!)

It was awesome to meet Vince, let alone work with him. An amazing talent. Most of my work was with Francois Kevorkian while mixing, but I did get a chance to record a few things and talk with them while we worked on mixes to get them approved. A great time I will never forget.

Lloyd, you must use a boat-load of batteries each show!! At $325 the MX150 isn't cheap- what radio do you use? I have several AT2035, what a workhorse. Do you a wireless TX for them? How do you get your board feed to the stadiums PA? Last question, how long before the performance do you turn the lav packs on? I love long set-up times, doesn't sound like you have any lead time... Does the band perform in the rain? Videotaping the rehearsal board is a brilliant idea, give the mixer an idea of what to expect.

Hi Leo, I'll let Lloyd answer these. Here are a few thoughts in case it is a while before he gets to your questions - I imagine he's in major ramp-up time at the moment. He uses a Dante setup for the front ensemble microphones and I believe also for the sideline mics. This includes a Dante XLLR breakout box with an ethernet cable running back to the mixing board.. If the rain is heavy, they have historically called off the show/competition, or they move it indoors and do a standing show - no drill or marching.

Hi Leo, You’re right, I wouldn’t call the MX150 cheap, just relatively inexpensive compared to DPA’s which I would rather have. However, they are well under $325 generally. Anything less expensive really doesn’t stand up to the SPL that our brass instruments generate, or are generally too big for what I would like. We do put in new batteries for every show, but we use all of our “used” batteries in rehearsal to make sure we aren’t wasteful. For wireless we have 16 ULXD’s, 2 QLXD’s and 2 PSM300’s with 16 receivers. We generally don’t use AT2035’s wirelessly, but you could with a 48v injector. We never feed the house/stadium system. Our mix is all on our own equipment. We have a few hours before the show to prepare, but it’s generally done in about 45 minutes. We can’t turn the packs on until a few minutes before our show starts, however, to set frequencies we take the antenna off and scan them quickly between performances. That way we don’t interfere with anyone. If it’s a very light rain, the corps may perform, but we won’t take electronics out for that.
