Sotheby's Exceptional Jewels & Precious Objects formerly in the Collection of The Duchess of Windsor

Twenty-three years after the celebrated Jewels of the Duchess of Windsor auction in 1987, Sotheby's is pleased to be offering twenty pieces formerly in the Collection of the Duchess of Windsor. Join Sotheby's David Bennett and historian Hugo Vickers as they recall the Duchess' iconic sense of style, the Duke's unwavering devotion to her, and how these influences are reflected in the key lots in the forthcoming sale in London on the 30 November.

Very true. Unfortunately, there’s people who’d say the poor are lazy and failed to work hard enough to earn wealth. This is entirely untrue and an ignorant, simplistic view of the core reasons behind poverty.

Lynn .D - The royal family disliked Wallis to the very depths of their souls. They wanted NOTHING that had ever belonged to her. When Edward died and his service was held, Wallis was told she could stay at Buckingham Palace. She had hoped that, at long last, she would finally be accepted by the royal family. Unfortunately Wallis wasn’t told that everyone was leaving that same day to go to another residence for a vacation. Wallis watched them all drive away through a window, she was left all alone....and no one told her goodbye.

These were not 'royal' jewels, the majority of them were commissioned after the abdication. They were privately owned pieces, belonging to a couple that lived in France for most of the time.

The government was threatened by this very popular King and his vision of a modern Monarchy. His choice of an american divorcee' was upsetting to them. The people however did not feel it an issue until it was spun by the court that Wallis was unacceptable. Then as sheep to the fold they fell in line as they always do.It was the perfect storm for a Baldwin Ku that would place a more user friendly King in place.Unfortunately Edward played into the trap that was set for him.

Except they don’t. A good example is the nouveau riche on reality tv who drape themselves in vulgar and tasteless jewelry. Then there’s the Kardashian’s. Not to mention Donald Trump who’s awash in a sea of the most hideous shades of gold. Money can’t buy taste and you can take the person out of the trailer park but not the trailer park out of the person.

Anders Liljevall NOT one piece of her jewelry collection was ugly! Wallis Simpson's taste in jewelry was not convential, little simple pieces of accessory. They were truly works of art; bold, big, over the top, commanding attention! That's how I like my own jewelry; even though mine is just costume. She was blessed to have been able to own and enjoy such exquisite beauty!
