Sorting Fabric Scraps and String Piecing on my Juki DDL 8700
I wanted to give you a review of my Juki DDL-8700 machine now I have been using it for a while but I had to sort though many different scraps before I could come up with a project! I had hoped to finish something, but then I want it to be BIGGER! so there will be another update!

Love it when the cats come in and hang out with you by laying on the fabric. M
As I write, it’s June 2024. I have watched this video multiple times since it was first posted. Of course, Agnes’ quilt is now long finished so it was very fun to see it as a WIP again. And Norma! So beautiful seeing you with her again Kate. This may well be one of my favourite videos of yours.
I have managed to avoid quilting for all of my 59 years, and now this striping thing has me eager to give it a try. 😐😏 I watch people shop at the thrift store. I watch people exercise and cook... I watch them crochet, sew doll clothes and collect dolls...., I watch them shear sheep, and groom dogs. I watch men build stick huts in the woods and build gabion walls and fences.. I watch housewives turn crap from dollar store into designer knockoffs... Now I'm watch you sort fabric scraps... I should have made that rhyme, but it might have taken time. I'll just sip my brandy and tell you that you're dandy. I will subscribe because I dig your vibe and the squares you put together look better than the weather.. happy New Year from snowy northern Nevada. 🤗💞💖😘
Kate, I would love to listen to you tell stories about every scrap of fabric you sorted- I would not mind a bit- really!
So I know I’m watching this in May 2024 and you may not see it….but Norma sitting in your project bins is exactly what my Lily loves to do. Right now she loves the tray with my sets of “Terry quilt” pieces ready to sew together (I assemble a bunch in layers separated by sheets of paper). It’s not a very big tray but quite cushy right now and she just sits there and looks out into the yard.🦋
Hello Kate and everyone on the lgs. Have a magical day💐 😊
I’m so happy, I found a younger creative businesswoman, just starting out with her business here in the USA. I am passing along all the fabrics that I was going to use by the pick-up load! What a joy, at 71; to give my burden to someone who thinks it a blessing!

Oh my goodness! I've been sewing ALL my life - worked as a seamstress and tailor MANY years ago so learned lots of little tips, but I never ever thought to always sew two pieces so you don't have all those insane ends! Kate - you are brilliant and I would LOVE to spend a day with you, playing with your scraps, your beautiful Juki and just learning from you. Thank you for bringing us into your home and I do love the moggies! xx

Kate, you never cease to amaze me with with your ability to combine colours. These squares are beautiful!
Excuse me, but I always feel like a “we” when watching your video’s , because I just know you must hear all my comments and ideas, I say out loud during your videos ( along with everyone else watching)..and that makes me and everyone else a part of your Creative project, certainly!☺️ ....So yes l, I believe the use of “ we “ is correct!

I was shocked how beautiful and colorful the squares turned out. Love this idea. 🌞
"it's not a prize winner, it never will win prizes"...the bald unapologetic honesty of that statement was such a relief and comfort to hear. You gladdened my heart!!!
Norma is so funny! She seems interested in your projects, or perhaps she wonders if you are messing up her bed? Lol
The minute you picked up those tiger and cow fabrics, I said, "That's a mod outfit for Agnes!"

Thank you for a lovely video. I wish my grown children could understand the joy we get out of playing with our bits and bobs. The end result pleases us, it engages our brain and stimulates our senses. Of course we can't forget a cat to stroke and talk with. Utter joy. It keeps us young.
I enjoy it very much when you film yourself sewing Kate!
I love your cats. My 3 are the same way & always have to sit on my lap or crawl across me when I'm trying to knit. 🙂
Norma is such an absolute love bug 😻 That quilt is going to be gorgeous!! I enjoy watching all your different videos because I can live vicariously though your various projects that I would like to do myself, but because of limited time, space, materials and/or funds, can't manage right now. Thank you so much for sharing 😊

The knitted blanket looks very *quilt-like*!! ❤️
I like that you use fabric as a base rather than paper. Before I know that people used paper, I went to yard sales and bought sheets. I cut them in squares and used them for string piecing.
I have plans for a string quilt too! Sew much fun. If your strip isn’t long enough, piece two together.
I just finished sorting my cotton and flannel scraps by color and wondered what now. Thank you for the great idea. I really appreciate all you do and your videos are informative, entertaining and relaxing.
I was looking at your home and wonder about you house plants. Can you do a tour of them with any stories or care instructions about them?🦌💌❤️🐑☕️🐝🌸📚🇨🇦

I started a string quilt but got far too organised measuring and colour coordinating, this version is far more fun and the finished product will be gorgeous. You’ve taught me so much about relaxing and enjoying my crafting, thankyou so much Kate. 🤗
those string blocks are just gorgeous! I like how fast that Juki sews a seam. I want one.
The blues and yellows are absolutely stunning!! I so love that pattern and the colours Kate.
You have two of my favorite things in the world, cats and fabrics. Love it!
Thank you so much for reminding me about the strip quilt.

Oh love the knitted project. Need to try and find pattern.
Thank you for the shout out. Everyone was happy to have you join us yesterday. I’ve always got a bin of string blocks going. I have a miter square blanket with 2.5” squares made from sock yarn that I’ve set aside for now. I love the process but the small needles, thin yarn, and small blocks aren’t calming my name right now. Some of my subscribers want to learn how to knit a miter square blanket so I bought some worsted weight yarn to start a new one. Bigger yarn and bigger squares so maybe I’ll get this one finished 😉 My cats agree with yours. Put something soft in a bin and they think I’ve made them a bed. 😆
Hi there I must say .. I am just shocked at how beautiful your quilt turned out! I watched the whole time you were making it and I am not one for crazy quilt s and alll that busy a=stuff .. BUT, I think jut now as I was waching you place it on your little couch I think Its the most butifu one ever !! I love, love the lavendar and the bright yellow and navy blue flowers patches ,, just gorgeous!!! So enjoyed watching! Now I guess Im hooked!! LOV IT! DyAnne
I really like your scrappy, knitted blanket. It's interesting and being nothing but scraps makes it unique. Colorful, fun and light hearted! Like you, Kate! :)
Kate, this video, followed through the givaway of this String Quilt captured my creativity and enterprise! I am now on my second redition of this Scraps & String Piecing (since I had so many strips of both colorways left over), after beginning just four days ago! I suspect that by the time I've even begun to dent the scrap/string heaps (sorted) I will have made three to four Q to K size quilts for people on my list! I love this concept--and the two I'm powering through currently are beyond beautiful. Thank you so much for the instruction! (Also, love your family and Anna is just a dear!)
Oh I love this so much. I'm starting one this afternoon. Your tv knitting project will be just the right thing to grab when you are a tad chilly around the edges.
Love the quilt blocks. I too have been trying to work through my bins of scraps and projects never completed. Such a good feeling to finish things, use up what I have on hand, and end up with something usable and lovely.
Hello Kate! Your new project reminds me of Portuguese tiles!
Love all that fabric. When I moved 7 years ago, to my little townhouse, I gifted most of my fabric to others. Did the same with my yarn. It just didn't fit in my house together with my kids. Seeing you sorting to all made my sewing spark light up! It's time I a going to make my own clothing again. As I did when the kids were little, I sewed, crochet, and knitted all our clothes. Work came in the way. I get more time in the near future. So many ideas you spark, my sweet kate. Love to watch you ;>*

Absolutely love your "stained glass" strip curtains! Unlined? How, pray tell, did you finish edges, double hem? Will check to see if you made a video on those. Perfect for a window that receives sun!
Love the yellow and blues together. Can't wait to see it finished.
Absolutely a gorgeous quilt for your granddaughter’s room when she comes to visit you and have sleepovers. I really do hope Agnes will take up quilting when she gets to be a little bit older. She will certainly have a fantastic teacher. Take care and stay healthy Kate. Cheers 😊.
You make it look so effortless! Love your videos ...it's like popping for coffee with a friend...keep it up! Thank you....

Oh, I love your channel and seeing Norma looks exactly like our cat Missy. She even loves to rub up against me while all the time and is constantly on my sewing table. Thank you so much for your fun channel and your light filled home!!!1
I love strip quilting. Made a few 20 years ago as gifts. I have so many different strips that I keep looking at. You are inspiring me to challenge myself to give it a go. I haven’t knitted in a few years and because of your video about Arne and Carlos I the knitting bug has bitten me. I love everything you do. Love your eye for colors.
I see a definite theme of using up scraps! Good for you!
Your home looks so fresh and lovely. A happy place. Good for you for sorting all those fabrics. More energy stimulated by tidying. Love you!🦌💌❤️🙏☕️
Hello friend Kate, I spent this weekend binge watching your previous KZread videos. I have more to watch but I really enjoyed that time with you.
Yes, I'm making a mitered square scarf. Having so much fun!
Your opening shot is sooo inviting. It says "Welcome to Kate's World." Always excited to find what you have in store. Thankyou!
I love your quilts. Mine were always made in haste while raised my 7- children. Now I take my time making my 18-grandchildrens quilt. I make baby quilts for my 9-great grandchildren. I love it! Thank you for showing us your wonderfully made quilts!
Hi! I love your podcast. Also, I admire you very much. I'm learning a lot.with you. I'm 75 years old and love to see and crochet. I don't know how to knit I will try to learn
What a fantastic variety of scraps! I see a lot of my favorites. I use some of my leftovers on the back of my quilts to make pieced backs. Then I cut useable squares. Although I have been quilting for 10 years, I just don't have that many small strips with which to string piece. I should create a scrap box just for stringssomedayI will have enough, because heaven knows, I have enough fabric! I concur! Every WIP is a cat bed!!.
Thank you Kate. This is how I make my scrappy quilts. 💕💕🌻🌻🇦🇺🇦🇺
Always feel like we are having a chat in the most fabulous knit night or quilt circle when I watch your making videos. Love sitting here on the lime green sofa with my friends
See I’m learning so much about sewing, quilting & everything. I like watching you sew the juki sound is nice . Even the sound of you cutting. The blocks are beautiful 😍
I'm cuddled with one of our boys right now, while listening to your chat. ☺️ Their mommy here was taken to the hospital for a few nights for respiratory issues, and they are glad to have me back. They also like to help me stitch and make cards. Adult daughter, and her 11 yo niece, both crochet, and their kitties like to sit close when that's going on. Our other daughter also has a knittlig loom. I feel so happy when the girls, and our son in law (woodworking) and their son (clay sculptures) have creative endeavors going on. My husband and older daughter do photography and he is a woodworker, also.
No sooner than your clean-up is done it starts all over. I remember more than 50 years ago my father saying if I had a level surface I would fill it up. How true!!!
Just found you! What a joy! It feels like I'm spending time with a friend and the bonus is that I am learning something new! The quilt squares are beautiful. Can't wait for next time.
I don’t quilt but I crochet and knit, and one of my favorite things to do is watch process videos, while I work on a project. Found your channel today and really enjoy what you are working on. Thank you.

Those are really lovely quilt squares, such vibrant colours, love it!! 💛💙 I‘m not knitting mitered squares, but I knit little hexagons from all my sockyarn/fingering weight scraps, that‘ll eventually get stitched together into a big blanket.
I am knitting my mitered square blanket with sock yarn! So easy and fun to knit! Glad to be using up my tiny balls of scraps. Thanks for the inspiration, Kate!
Your new project is lovely looking straightaway. Cannot wait to see what you have decided to make with the beautiful squares. Good luck. Take care, Kate.
Ellie, the lovely lady on "Craft House Magic" is making a similar blanket. Recommend her channel to everyone👍🏻
That’s what brought me to your channel, Kate. The Yuki sewing machine episode was suggested to me by KZread a few months ago. I bought a Yuki last year and love using it for my scrappy bags. Sometimes the algorithm gets it right somehow. So glad I found you. I admire your confidence, authenticity, humor, wisdom and skills. It was because of you that I had the courage to show my face on my channel, just when I was at a low point in my life, dealing with Bell’s Palsy. Thank you, Kate! 😘❤️
Kate, I just had to tell you ..... you inspired me to take my scraps of paper in random widths and made 6 x 6 blocks using a heavier base paper for the form to lay them on then used all random colors some solid some patterned and I kid you not they turned out lovely. Since I don't sew this did give me a way to use the scraps like you do your material. Thanks so much for the inspiration. Have a Blessed day.

I have never sewn a quilt top (although I did make a couple of pillow cases following Arne & Carlos "crazy quilt " videos) but this technique was calling out to me! Thanks to you Kate, I did complete a book cover for a photo album using 4"X4" (imperfect but beautiful) string pieced squares. I could not be more pleased! I so enjoy all of your videos. Ginny
I can't believe I didn't know about this string piecing! I've had a wonderful time with you and your fabric, sewing and the adorable cats. 😊
Kate, I love that! It always looked so complicated, but it's not really. Yours is beautiful. I can see Arne seeing this and wanting to make one. Love your videos and you and those darling cats. Kisses and snuggles for all of you 😍
Hi Kate. You've got some fabrics. 🤣 I was like "How is she going to get through that?!" Well you did. I had no idea how everything would turn out when you started sewing. But it turned out so much better than I first thought. When I saw it up on the wall I had a WOW moment. Never thought that mixing up so many different designs would end up looking so good. You always surprise me with your talent and creativity. Loving it. Can't wait to see you playing around with those squares and see how that turns out. Big hug from across the ocean 🌊❤❤❤XXXX
