That was not that skipper's first rodeo at Sodwana beach launch. He was patient with the sets and generally had his angles of attack okay. But I would say that his craft was hopelessly underpowered for those surf conditions and human payload. He just couldn't take proper advantage of the flat water between the sets. That also caused him to drift to where it was rougher (apparently the sandbank). As a qualified skiboat skipper I would say that he was reckless in tackling that surf with those impediments. He was actually a little lucky to make it. RMY

I would agree completely. Him making it was not experience, it was a roll of the dice that came up lucky. An experienced skipper would never have tackled that surf with that boat, motor and load combination.

Bad launch but good recovery, he knows what he is doing. You can´t go full throttle when you hit the wave, and always a bit sideways not straight. In Indonesia leaving Grajagan port they go through waves like that like it is normal, with 10 people in the boat.

  • @ericwelsh4853

I always try to hit the waves straight. For me, that seems to minimize roll.

Knowing this launch well (6 launches a day with 6 divers on board) for many years I can say the following - This is a 4.5 m boat and the law says 1 person per full meter in RSA. This means in terms of numbers they are max but in terms of weight they are 1 person overloaded. - The surf looks like an above average day. Another reason to look at dropping a passenger to keep things safe. - they ran to far down the waves to the north putting them close to the sandbar called “ the graveyard” for a reason. You avoid this and turn and run with the waves back and keep close to the point as possible. - the heavy weight make picking up and planing of the boat and therefore speed to run down past the waves difficult putting them in a bad spot.. - it certainly took some skill to not flip this boat as chances were 50/50 of this happening.

I don't know Sodwana but as a surfer it looks to me like they ran right across a rip current and into the incoming flow where the waves were largest and most turbulent? The camera does not show it but it looks like, if they had continued out to the camera's right, it would probably have been much easier, at least up to the back.
