Sorry If Your Battery Tender Feels Inadequate

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Being that Pan Ams are so sensitive and prone to electrical gremlins, I realized that this may help some folks.
I include a couple other potential issues to watch out for too.
I somehow managed to get myself partnered with First Manufacturing Co! So, if you need leather jackets, vests, gloves, or anything else First Manufacturing Co sells, here's a code for 25% off at firstmfg.com - 1CHASE_N

Good info, I’ll have to check my battery connections. Mine charges around 14V give or take.

It never hurts to check connections. I've watched my voltmeter widget like a hawk since my initial trip home with a bad battery, so I know anything above 70mph means it should be running 14.1V to 14.2V. Thank you for watching!

No problem, I hope it helps everyone with a Pan Am out there. There's no reason to get rid of your Battery Tender. I've used my old Tender on my truck in the winter and on a tractor battery I bought that had discharged while sitting on the shelf. It just wouldn't work on my Pan Am. Thank you for watching

I have the same .75 amp charger you have, no issues but I ride almost everyday. I do notice, I'll ride into the garage take helmet off and the tender is indicating around 80% with its flashing light... it should be fully charged so I do think the stator upgrade on the 2024 is needed. I am hoping mine fails during warranty and they give me a free upgrade. lol

I stepped up to the 4 amp tender after the tech at Farrow H-D told me it was required and all the charging issues disappeared. The 750mA tender would intermittently charge/not charge and didn't fill me with confidence. I was gunshy after having a bad battery right after buying my Pan Am. I've watched the readout on my new tender drop almost 1V just by moving the bike so the security system eats a lot of juice. I bought the 5 year ESP(extended warranty) in June so if my stator goes out it's covered. This is the 1st bike I've ever had where I'm not considering something else 6 months to a year later. It really does everything I need so I went all in on the extended warranty. Thank you again for watching!

I'm few years older then you, we called those idiot lights. I have been using an Optimate 3 for a while now with no issues. I can watch my voltage drop in the widget when I start to turn on accessorys but I guess thats suppose to happen. Mostly with heated gear. Good stuff, ride safe!

Yep, starting accessories will drop it but all I have is the OE heated grips and haven't noticed a drop with them. Running fog lights, a heated seat, heated riding gear, and heated grips would certainly be quite a bit of a draw on your voltage though. It's probably the reason H-D has updated the newest PAs with a larger stator and battery. Thank you for watching and stay safe out there too!

I switched to an antigravity lithium battery. Still keep it on a tender, but dnt have starting issues anymore.

That's what a lot of folks have done and they all seem pretty happy with the antigravity batteries. I haven't had any issues since switching my tender over to 4Amps though. That being said, H-D has updated the newest Pan Ams with a larger battery. So when my battery shuffles off into the great electrical ether in the sky, it's what I'll be switching to. Thank you for watching!

@Chase_N there is another option. If you prefer to stay with AGM, Dennis Kirk has a replacement that I believe is 320 cranking amps. Approximately 100 more cold CCs than the harley factory one. The antigravity is 420, I believe. All I know is that it's been a great. replacement for my 2022 model.

@Chase_N oh yea, the bigger battery harley now has for the new 23,24 models is larger than the original in ours. It won't fit. They made a new charging system that we don't have. Bigger battery, bigger compartment, bigger stator. We are stuck with the original or aftermarket fit for our system

The tech at my local dealer stressed the importance of a tender on the Pan America in a big way.

That's good to hear, it sounds like you had a tech that cares! When I've went on trips and did daily rides the PAS has been fine, but if it's going to sit for more than a couple days, on the tender it goes. I just hope this helps some folks out. Low batteries seem to be the main culprit behind Pan Am issues. Thank you for watching and enjoy that Pan Am!

I have been using the 1 amp NOCO tender sold at my HD dealership. I havent had any issues. That being said another gentleman on You Tube also suggested that a minimum 2 amp tender is required to keep ahead of the parasitic draw of the PA's electronics. Are you hooking up directly to your battery terminals or thru the pigtail that comes on the bike ? I am going to purchase the same charger you have ASAP and give my battery terminals a check to insure that they are secure. Thank you Chase for the info.

@@paulwojnar2291 I'm going through the factory pigtail. If I go directly clamped to the + battery terminal and a ground, my old 750mA tender works fine but it won't work through the pigtail. After switching to the 4amp tender, I've never had another issue. In the owner's manual it states " a tender up to 5amps" but unfortunately doesn't give a minimum amperage. I've found the battery terminals loose 3 times in what's now over 5000 miles so it's a good idea to check them if you see a variation in your charging voltage on your TFT widget. Thank you for watching and I'm happy if this helps keep anyone with a Pan Am on the road!
