What was the tiny backwards-facing propeller for? For a second I thought it was a fan to cool the pilot, but then the intelligent part of my brain kicked in and I realized that that was ridiculous.

Measures air speed. Very important as going too fast causes wings to be ripped off.

Exactly. The Albatros has the speed. All he has to do is open the throttle and point it in a straight line and he can walk right away from a triplane.
