Lyrics:
Damn, I wish I was your lover
I'd rock you 'til the daylight comes
Made sure you are smiling and warm
I am everything, tonight, I'll be your mother
I'll do such things to ease your pain
Free your mind, and you won't feel ashamed
Shucks, for me there is no other
You're the only shoe that fits
I can't imagine I'll grow out of it
Damn, I wish I was your lover

Once upon a time, I recorded this song on a blank cassette tape and mailed it to my love, with no name. He guessed it was me and said that he hoped it was. For 30 years now he is and always will be my sweetest love, my best friend, my husband and soulmate and of course my lover.

I live in the Montrose neighborhood of Houston, and worked at a book shop across from Mary's bar, back in the day. I wish you all could have been there for the annual "Easter Bonnet Parade", the Drag Races (short 1k & 2k races where all participants ran in heels and full drag), the rooftop Sumo wrestling matches, and Sophie B. Hawkins singing this from the rooftop of Mary's bar with her full band backing her up as thousands of us, gay, straight, and whatever, danced and sang. It was glorious fun! ❤

Like so many things, I didn't much appreciate this band on their arrival, this song included. Some 30 plus years later, spending a decade chasing the frisson dragon, this song hits an amazing sweet spot. Sophie B does this so damn well, with a talented ensemble. Proving yet again, the 90s was the best possible decade for music!
This song gets a lot of crap thrown at it, but it's really one of the best songs ever written about longing for someone so much and knowing you can't have them. It still sounds fresh and fantastic after all these years. A classic! Very well done Sophie!

Take me back to an 11 year old boy why dont you. Im in my buddies back yard while his mom is out on a Friday night. Were up all night causing havoc and recording gems like this from the radio to a tape. Us Gen-X kids were really unsupervised a lot.
It's taken me decades to figure out who she's singing to but I still dig this song. Awesome!
30 years later and still digging this song with the heart of an 18 year old in this mid 40's bod.

A lesson for the "new" generation of female singers (and sometimes women in general), how much skin you show hasn't got a thing to do with sex appeal or how hot you are.

Who else rocked out to this song as a 13 year old when it was released and didn't fully comprehend the sensuality of the lyrics until adulthood?

This song means the world to me. I was 18 years old when this song was in the charts. I was trying to date a girl and every time we were in my car I’d play this to drop the biggest of hints. Now I’m 48 years old. Never did get the girl but the song will stay with me for ever. Such wonderful memories. Thank you Sophie😉

That’s cool that you were that bold about it! But….. she probably didn’t think that you liked girls. I think that this is more of a “guilty pleasure” for guys. I’m not at all the most masculine man, but, we can’t really admit that we like this. Not then, especially.

DAMN.... I miss 90's music!!!!!
When "Feeling like a school boy, too shy and too young..." is a throw away line barely audible, haunting the end of the track; that's a mark of a confident lyricist. Our language is beautiful, use it.

they ruined the ENTIRE SERIES with that one rogue storyline. Pretty sure it happened like that because behind the scenes, Jennie was edging out Shannon. And she did it.I watched the series in real time and the affair between dylan and kelly was out of nowhere. there was literally NOTHING that was building on anything between those two.. dylan and kelly, so something happened that year.. behind the scenes. The original series changed its' original trajectory. The original would have been so much better. I stopped watching, after it stopped making any kind of sense.

Lyrics: "That old dog has chained you up alright Give you everything you need To live inside a twisted cage Sleep beside an empty rage I had a dream, I was your hero Damn, I wish I was your lover I'll rock you 'til the daylight comes Make sure you are smilin' and warm I am everything, tonight I'll be your mother I'll do such things to ease your pain Free your mind and you won't feel ashamed, oh, oh Open up on the inside, gonna fill you up, gonna make you cry This monkey can't stand to see you black and blue I give you somethin' sweet each time You come inside my jungle book What, is it just too good? Don't say you'll stay 'cause then you'll go away Damn, I wish I was your lover I'll rock you 'til the daylight comes Make sure you are smilin' and warm I am everything, tonight I'll be your mother I'll do such things to ease your pain Free your mind and you won't feel ashamed Shucks, for me there is no other You're the only shoe that fits I can't imagine I'll grow out of it Damn, I wish I was your lover, yeah If I was your girl believe me I'd turn on the Rolling Stones We could groove along and feel much better Let me in I could do it forever and ever and ever and ever Give me an hour to kiss you Walk through Heaven's door I'm sure We don't need no doctor to feel much better Let me in Forever and ever and ever and ever I sat on a mountainside with peace of mind And I lay by the ocean Makin' love to her with visions clear Walked the days with no one near And I return as chained and bound to you Damn, I wish I was your lover I'll rock you 'til the daylight comes Make sure you are smilin' and warm I am everything, tonight I'll be your mother I'll do such things to ease your pain Free your mind and you won't feel ashamed Shucks, for me there is no other You're the only shoe that fits I can't imagine I'll grow out of it Damn, I wish I was your lover I wanna open up, I wanna come inside I wanna fill you up, I wanna make you cry (Damn, I wish I was your lover) Gettin' on the subway and I'm comin' uptown (Damn, I wish I was your lover) Standin' on a street corner, waitin' for my love to change (Damn, I wish I was your lover) Feelin' like a schoolboy, too shy and too young (Damn, I wish I was your lover) Open up, I wanna come inside I wanna fill you up, I wanna make you cry (Damn, I wish I was your lover) Gettin' on my camel and I'll ride it uptown, ooh (Damn, I wish I was your lover) Hanging around this jungle, wishing that this" Love is the Only Engine of Survival...
