Sony X85K TV Review - Is It Worth Your Money?

Ғылым және технология

Get the Sony X85K: www.rtings.com/afflink/AcEAAH...
The Sony X85K is a mid-range 4k LED TV released in 2022. It's largely unchanged from its predecessor, the Sony X85J, as it uses the same 4k HDR Processor X1 and has many of the same features. It's powered by the Google TV interface, which has a ton of apps available to download and gives you access to Google Assistant. It has a limited feature set compared to the higher-end models, as it lacks a local dimming feature. It's available in a wide range of sizes, from 43 to 85 inches.

Great vid guys! It's actually a great TV for ordinary SDR content with sports, movies and shows - along with being completely flicker-free which really helps with eye strain for non-OLED TVs. It also goes a very good job of upscaling and processing 720/1080i/p content due to the great X1 HDR chipset - though it lags behind the newer XR Cognitive/XR Clear feature quite a lot! Wouldn't recommend it for HDR content as it lacks local dimming and peak brightness compared to other mid and high range models - it's decent but not more than that. If you like the Sony look for colour, motion & clarity and only watch SDR content and your coming from an older LCD TV, then this, for me atleast, is a solid choice!

I got mostly dvds and blu rays. May replace the more visual heavy dvds with 4k or 1080p blu rays. I like this tv so far and I'll buy the tv complete strangers want me to buy later in a bigger size when I move out but I'm not throwing this tv under the bus. John wick 4 in dolby vision uhd disc is impressive along with the other 25 titles I have in 4k. Plus the 100s I have on blu ray and the even more hundreds of dvds. 1080p blu ray looks great but dvd is ymmv but mostly ok to it is what it is. Some good for what it is. Vhs is what it is ofcourse. I use a hdmi 4:3 capable converter cause the av connection looks terrible. Looks like the image is unstable and gonna melt or burn away or something.

Great review! I do need one clarification, this tv does't have local dimming but does it have blooming around subtitles? You always mention blooming on tv with FALD and for me is a deal braker. I'm from Europe and i watch movies and tv shows with subtitles. Do tv's without local dimming from other brands also don't have blooming? Please, response.

They are doing great things no doubt but once you see how horrible the image processing is in person there is no way you would recommend it to anybody to actually spend their money on.. Hi gamers, I have a different, higher end model with (very few) local dimming zones and higher brightness - the X85L. And I'm *furious* that after spilling 75€ on a high end 8K | 4K/120Hz supporting HDMI cable I noticed that it *destroys* your picture quality, once you actually set a connected PC to 120Hz. Everything's sharp and clear at 4K/60, but at 120 you can barely read native-scale text, and you lose a ton of edge/general clarity. This gets worse once you enable HDR. (both HDR and VRR simultaneously work at 4K/120 on the X85L [can't claim anything about this K model], which is nice, but the lost clarity feels like such a betrayal, that I absolutely didn't expect). The L's speakers are very usable once you bump bass and lower mids/treble in the built-in equalizer and have quite a bit of bump, but yeah, can't compare to any dedicated speakers of course. (sadly no 3.5mm port, so I had to sell my old Bose PC speakers that I always used for my old TV). For the ads/Google TV: • Go to the Android Settings (top right cog wheel next to 'Google TV' on the home screen, or the cog on either of the two Sony remotes) • "Accounts and sign-in" [alternatively get here via profile pic in the top left → click → [Manage accounts"] • Select your account • Scroll all the way to the bottom, and you should see "Apps only mode", right between "Google Assistant" and "Remove" Enable that to get significantly less clutter and random ads for streaming services you don't use. It will just show your installed apps in a grid view (with some suggested content above it). Technically you can install third-party launchers like FLauncher (which you need to easily launch sideloaded non-native TV apps - I use that for Xtra and a bluetooth mouse/phone app that emulates physical mouse/keyboard hardware, helps greatly) But I wouldn't recommend tinkering with ADB to fully replace the default launcher with a solution like that. You can also set your DNS to AdGuard's filtering resolver at 94,140,14,14 [Primary] and 94,140,15,15 [secondary] to block ads/some tracking in most apps systemwide. Also the Google TV interface is a lot different from the classic Android TV - for example I couldn't find the regular Play Store anywhere. To fix that, tap 'Inputs' ➞⃢ and scroll to the right to 'Edit' you should find the Play Store somewhere in there. Additionally the official KZread app can't go above 1080p even for 4K videos, because many apps/Android TV internally reports a 1080p resolution (and the user interface also renders at that) and Sony forgot to work around this. (Aida64 correctly displays a 4K resolution though) Thankfully you can easily sideload a client that flawlessly displays 4K KZread videos e.g. the absolutely excellent SmartTube beta (the only official sites are either the GitHub page of developer 'yuliskov' directly, or his overview webspace at smarttubeapp, github,io) You can easily send the APK to the TV using these apps from the Play Store. "Send files to TV" by Yablio lets you send the APK from a phone or PC over your local network. Or the "AFTVnews Downloader", which lets you input URLs, or even easier, a short code using the numpad on the classic-style Sony remote. (e.g. 79015 for SmartTube beta) If you don't want to log in, you sadly can't just connect an USB stick, because you can only view media on those with the preinstalled apps. But you can log out of Google after setting up STb, because it works (and updates) completely independently from the Play Store/any 'full' device account. (otherwise you can push it from a PC via ADB, but its way easier to just use one of these apps from the Play Store - once installed you can just log out and use those for further sideloading/installing of APKs - F-Droid works, too, but really needs a mouse to navigate sometimes) I don't really fall into the mainstream streaming app subscriber customer-type - but if you're here on Rtings, then I believe you're somewhat of a nerd like me, and would appreciate some nerd insight. After some tinkering I'm actually pretty happy with this thing! (keep in mind that I have the KD-55X85L, which isn't exactly this X85K, but I assume the software stuff applies for it as well)

@@furballbear Oh yeah, I can confirm that it still looks amazing and flawlessly fluid at 120 HDR - but at least with a PC at 100% scale you lose just a tad bit clarity. Fairly, that isn't really noticable at all in games and if you set e.g. Windows to 200%+ scale, so text is actually at a readable size with usual couch distances (or using Steam Big Picture). It's great, just not *perfect* (the processor apparently isn't powerful enough vs. the XR models) so there's a little bit more aliasing. But tbh being too pedantic about tiny details and obsessing over FPS and frametime readouts rather than just playing a game at fairly great specs already might be a specific PC gamer 'issue', haha.
