WH1000XM2 Review - Could the older WH1000XM2 be in fact the BEST value for money noise-canceling headphones in 2019? How do they stack up to the newer WH1000XM3?
The Sony WH1000XM2 as you might have heard is not the newest top-tier noise canceling headphones model by Sony. The newest kid on the block is WH-1000XM3, but this previous model offers pretty much the same value as the newest product for a much lower price.
So just to clear the air, aside from using USB-C with quick-charging and offering better battery life, the newest Sony WH1000XM3 also offers a more comfortable fit (allegedly). They also have better noise cancellation, mostly due to their lower self-noise.
On the other hand, the Sony WH-1000XM2 which I have, offer way better value for money. Don't get me wrong the XM2 has probably the best noise isolation performance and very well-balanced sound quality, not that different from the WH-1000XM3 - I compared and tested them extensively myself.
The built quality of the headphones is great. Sony uses lightweight plastics with soft touch leathery materials that help the product to look and feel very premium to the touch, but most of all help with the ergonomics.
The headband is comfortable and not too tight and that helps furthermore the headphones to sit on your head nicely for long hours, like on a flight. These are definitely over the ear headphones. They don't sit on your ears, but rather cover them completely. That means that you have significant noise reduction when you put them on even without turning them on.
As with any modern Bluetooth headphones, the WH-1000XM2 have an integrated microphone. Hands-free calling is a blast and it sounds great on both ends of the line.
The surface of the right ear cup is gesture enabled, so you can do stuff like play/pause, skip a song or go back, volume up and down and if you hold your finger on the center of the cup it will activate your voice assistant. In my case that's Siri.
But by far my favorite feature is...you know what... find out and... :)
