Sony Soundbar No Power Repair SA-CT60BT

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Sony Soundbar No Power Repair SA-CT60BT.
Fixing a Sony SA-CT60BT Soundbar with No Power.
We picked up a Sony soundbar with remote from the tip shop for £8. When we tested it at home it had no power and would not turn on. Let's watch me trying to fix it and see if we can get it working again. Some of these soundbar models go for around £45 on eBay.
Buy it from our shop if it's still available.

Great video. I have the same unit, same symptoms, apparently dead - no response from remote. I would never have tackled taking it apart it not for the video. Having taken it apart & close inspection, could find nothing wrong, put it back together carefully, especially the connectors. Fired it up - it worked! Really hate throwing out something that is still useful so an=m very happy - thanks.

I hear ya Charlie. I'm working on mine now. A month ago I fixed my 2008 Honda CRV digital info display on dash. It was pixalating...couldn't tell how much gas was in tank etc. I searched and searched and found ONE video with a guy at a company who repairs them for $300. I never solder anything, but all I did was touch the hot soldering iron to 6 soldered terminals, not melting none of them, just briefly touched them, put the dash back together and shazzzaaam...the damn thing worked...still working perfect!

Following your instructions I have disassembled and checked it. All capacitors seem to be ok. I have reassembled it and everything works correctly. I guess it was a bad contact problem.

Unless you know the schematic then measuring the capacitance in-situ unfortunately isn't going to tell you much as it's usual to have capacitors in parallel, particularly in the power supply section. You can test if a cap's failed short circuit by using the resistance setting on your meter and seeing if it drops to zero ohms but unfortunately they can also fail open circuit so it's not guaranteed. Good on you for fixing this stuff up though; we throw away such a lot that can be repaired usually because of bad electrolytic caps, dirty connections or dry solder joints. Also I'd recommend investing in some desoldering braid, rosin flux and leaded solder - it's much less sticky and nicer to work with than the lead-free stuff. Keep it up! EDIT: As I watched through more of the video, I see that you did actually say about the problems of measuring them in-place and the leaded solder - serves me right for not watching the whole thing through first!

Equally, with the SMCs - those resistors - 103 doesn't mean 103 kilo ohms but 10 x 10^3 or 10k ohms. The first 2 digits are the significant numbers and the 3rd digit is the multiplier. Thus 474 would be 47 x 10^4, or 470k ohms (an electronics engineer would refer to it, as a four-seventy k resistor). And the correct terms are positive and negative, rather plus and minus, when talking electrolytic capacitors, usually notated to +ve and -ve. 30 years ago, all these things would have been repaired, just as you've done here (I'd have replace all those capacitors in one go, at 30p per cap.) but we live in a throw away world.

Great video I have the exact model thats failed so will attempt to repair it soon. Sony soundbars like this even when you plug them in remain turned off until you power them on using the remote. {this model} I did notice as mine failed it displayed a few quirky faults, when connected via optical cable it would lose audio for around 0.1 - 0.3 of sec specifically on spoken word audio. Changing over to analogue inputs solved this for the last few months but it didnt last. Also during power off it would generate a large "thunk" sound as it powered down.. That got progressively louder. Fingers crossed for the repair.

So upon investigation, I discovered it was the a simular fault to yours the 35v 470Uf capacitor was swollen as was the the one marked 16v 1000Uf towards the front. I ordered some parts and figured I'd give it ago. It quickly dawned on me my soldering or more accurately desoldering skills are about 10 years out of practice... Through the occasional bit of swearing and burned finger persistence paid off and the job was complete. It all looked good, cleaned it up with a bit of isopropyl. Put it back together and then Boom. No it didn't explode it worked perfectly , even sync issue now that plagued the optical output works with no cut outs. It's a shame manufacturers get away with designing flawed or built in failure just to sell more products. Many thanks.

  • @RetroElectronicRepair

As long as caps aren't charged to over 10v you can just sort them by putting a screwdriver between their 2 pins (use screwdriver with insulated handle) that discharges it instantly. Anything over that either keep pressing the power button which can sometimes discharge them or look up on KZread about safely discharging caps. Good luck in fixing it.
