Sony NEX-7 Hands-On Field Test
Ғылым және технология
Sony Canada graciously lent us their mirrorless crown jewel, the NEX-7 to test for some nitty-gritty street shooting. We take a look at the images, some video, and the cool features on this 24 megapixel pocket rocket!
Special thanks to:
Dave Paul for the protection
Sony Canada for the opportunity to try out their latest gear early
Ryan HK for the stunt work
The Area for letting us shoot in their swank venue.

I really like the way you explaining things and your style of doing video is just right for my taste. Thanks a lot, I'm looking forward to your new videos, great job!
Great! I've been looking forward to this one. Great video, thanks.
Great video as always! informative and delivered in a humorous fashion :)
Great test!
Chris, as usual a great job. It's going to be a game changer
Great video!
The user interface on this camera is astounding. Really high quality far beyond the competitors.

These are really good videos.
That's a new host - Dave Paul - who would have thought then!
Great video , entertaining and informational Thank You
ive been thinking about buying this for videos but I heard of the overheating problem. so do you think this camera is good for when it comes to videos or do you think ill have a big issue with it?
@RexyHsieh We didn't notice it on any of our footage, however, it was all shot in places with lots of ambient noise. We'll check for it again when we get a production sample. Remember as well, though, the NEX-7 has a mic jack and shoe, so you can use an external mic. Jordan @ The Camera Store

@CalvinPixels The 5n has the same manual controls, however they are selected in the menu, where the three dials of the NEX-7 allow you to control any common settings easily. Jordan @ The Camera Store TV
This is the camera I've been waiting for. Amazing! Going to buy this one with the sony 50mm 1/8 lens! Can't wait till it comes out! Great video guys ;)

@estey96 No, RAW conversion software was unavailable as this camera has not been released, these are unedited highest quality JPEGs. Jordan @ The Camera Store TV
Well done Chris.
@tubey2007 We used an AF100 and just the built in ND filters. Colours were adjusted in Premiere Pro CS5.5 Jordan @ The Camera Store TV
Awesome, thanks!!
i really like your review =)! keep it up!
I be getting this Camera for sure!
@travtheump The viewfinder is an electronic viewfinder, so parallax is not an issue. The tripod mount is right in the middle of the lens mount where, it should be. Jordan @ The Camera Store

@aveiga48 Yes, only in that the NEX-7 doesn't lose light the way the A77 does, because of the pellicle mirror, and so won't need a higher ISO to compensate in darker situations. We imagine that ISO performance between the two will be close if not identical at a given ISO value. Chris @ The Camera Store
Very Good review @The Camera Store TV
@g1234538 Yes, this was a bug with the pre-production camera and lens we were using. Jordan @ The Camera Store TV
After my canon kit was stolen, i decided to give Sony a try. Got a great deal on it, picked it up from a local camera exchange for $150 with a screw mount adapter and 35mm 2.8 lens. I love it so far, especially for the price i paid for it. I ordered the 16-50mm e mount lens for a more flexible and compact setup, i'm pretty excited to use it when it comes in.
Yes, the NEX-7 does have a hotshoe, however you will need to grab a Minolta-> ISO hotshoe adaptor to fit the shoe on the VMP.
This was shot on the Panasonic AF100, with the Panasonic 25mm F1.4, 14-140 zoom, and a Nikon 35mm F1.4. The video was adjusted on editing to bring down the contrast, as the light was very harsh that day. Jordan @ The Camera Store TV
Great video..great camera...which bag are you using and do you recommend it for the NEX 7 with 2 additional lenses? Thanks
The Sony NEX-7 of 2011 was the first really good mirrorless camera body. It was very expensive at around 2000€. It was sold with the kit lens which was very inferior for the quality of this camera. At 2011 only the Sony Zeiss 24mm f/1.8 T* ZA was good enough. The Sony NEX-7 features were passed much later with a lower price at the Sony a6000 in 2004. The Sony a6000 was such a success that is still in 2010 is sold new and hasn't been discontinued. The only peculiarity with the Sony NEX-7 is the Minolta flash shoe.
@Tidybrown74 We use a Novoflex adaptor. Unfortunately, VR is not functional with adaptors. Jordan @ The Camera Store TV
Nope, that's Dave Paul, a TCS staff member and one of our favourite co-hosts. You can see him at his best in the Panasonic G3 vs Nikon 1, and HS20 vs DSLR videos. Jordan @ The Camera Store TV
@EdoConan The NEX-7 has an APS-C size sensor. This gives you a 1.5 crop factor. The lens we used in the video is a Zeiss 24mm F1.8, so you can check out the bokeh for yourself. Jordan @ The Camera Store TV
Nice review ...
@FlyLifeFilms No, the only NEX-7 footage is at 2:40. The rest was shot with the glorious Panasonic AF100.
Fun preview, entertaining presentation. More close ups of the camera would be nice. AND, a look through the eye-level finder would have been perfect.
This camera looks pretty interesting!
@BLINDCROW91 The NEX-7 was postponed due to the disaster in Thailand. There is still no confirmed ETA, but the camera can be pre-ordered on our site. Jordan @ The Camera Store TV
I got to check this camera out recently - looks amazing - would love to take one on a walk around London and try some street photography - can you possibly recommend a couple of extra lenses to get at purchase for street shots?
Can you please tell me what adapter you used to add the Nikon lens... there are sooooo many out there, but I guess you used a pretty good one?? Also when using the adapter with a Nikon lens would the VR still work? Thanks!!!
@aluxious No AF with any lenses but Sony glass. Or Minolta AF lenses with their new pellicle mirror adaptor.
Of course! Just check on our channel page or search for it. Jordan @ The Camera Store TV
I wanted to know which camera has the best Kit Lens between the Sony NEX7 & the Sony Alpha ZV-E10?
@YasarzZ Yes, however currently none support adjusting aperture. If you want to know how to manually set an aperture on Canon lenses, send me a message. Jordan @ The Camera Store
@TheCameraStoreTV does the novoflex adaptor you were using support g lenses?
what camera you use to shoot most of the video?
@lookoutzero Dave Paul is available for any bodyguarding needs. Contact him at The Camera Store. You will have to pay travel time. The Nikon adaptors will be manual focus and manual aperture. You can shoot in aperture priority mode though... Jordan @ The Camera Store TV
@iTouchiPodz001 Total set-up. He's one of Calgary's most beloved pros, Ryan HK. You can see him in our Medium Format Snowboard Photography video.
@Aldehyde74 A Nikon 55mm lens will be an 82mm equivalent field of view. The 5D II and NEX-7 are quite different cameras, the 5D II has great low light performance, and that great full frame imager, but the Sony is a better street camera due to its size, and the ability to mount almost any lens is a huge bonus. Jordan @ The Camera Store
@aluxious There are several EOS to NEX adaptors out there. However, they will not let you adjust aperture. The upcoming Birger adaptor will though... Jordan @ The Camera Store
I assume with the adapter you loose any AF or VR/IS capability? And how does the aperture control work with the adapters?
@snupcho Unfortunately, there is no in-body stabilization in the NEX line. As far as the AF motor, that is included in the new LAE2 adaptor. This will let all the Alpha and older minolta lenses autofocus, just like they do on a DSLR. Jordan @ The Camera Store TV
hahaha great preview guys
@TheCameraStoreTV two questions here : 1.- how many adapters are there available, and how is the you used called like? 2.- Is that a hot shoe on the top of the nex 7?
@shiffat As long as it is an AF Minolta lens, it will work with the LA-EA2 adaptor. Jordan @ The Camera Store TV
@videodaddy99 Exactly. The lenses are MF and unstabilized on the NEX-7. However, the NEX-7 has a great peaking function to aid with any MF lenses. When the lens does not have an aperture ring, aperture is controlled on the mount adaptor, with a small ring. We have used Novoflex and FotoDiox adaptors, and had no problems with either.
@amosjsoma The NEX-7 has a mic jack and shoe. However, the hotshoe is Sony/Minolta's proprietary type, so you may need to grab an adaptor to use third party shotgun mics. Jordan @ The Camera Store
What camera do you use to record this video ??? Anyone ? Also what did you use to record the audio? Its so clear
Hey, ive had a sony nex 3 for awhile and i was thinking of switching to something higher, and i was probably thinking of going for canon but now the nex-7 is out, and im kinda confused as to get this or a canon. I'm basically into street photography, so i was wondering if you could point me in the right direction?
The Zeiss 24mm F1.8 is a killer street shooter lens if you want a good 35mm equivalent. The Sony 50mm F1.8 is a great option for a short telephoto portrait lens. That's be my take. Jordan @ The Camera Store TV
@coniehoot The word is we'll start seeing them in Canada right after Christmas.
good video guys
I think i kept on looking the security guard more than the camera review LOL
Any issue with parallax being that the viewfinder is so far left on the body? Tripod mounting?
hello there , nice review . i have one simple question . sony new 7 or nikon d5100 for image quality ?? i know the comparison isn't fair here , but am stuck between the two !!! i am not professional photographer , i need camera that do the job well enough . thx
Don't know if anyone asked yet, but which video camera were you using for this video?
@shiffat 58/1.2 is a minolta MD mount lens which can't use on nex-7 with auto-focus, you can use it manually with a MD-NEX(E) adaptor
Does it have image stabilization and AF motor inside the body like the Sony alpha models?
what camera did you use to shoot this video?
How do you think this camera compares to the 5D Mark II & III in low iso conditions? I know higher iso the full frame would come out sharper. But I'm really more concern of the detail quality compared to a full frame dslr.
@pittguy578 You just need an adaptor on the lens mount. I use the Novoflex Nikon F-NEX, it's really solid. You do need an adapter with an aperture control ring if you plan to use Nikon G lenses. Jordan @ The Camera Store
Great review of what looks like a great camera. Did Sony remember to put a place to mount and plug in an external microphone? This little camera would be great for video IF one can use something other than the internal mic.
I think I'm in love....with the camera obviously, thou the needle thing was sweet haha
Did the camera ever overheat whenever you were using video?
The good old Panasonic AF100. Great camera for the price. Jordan @ The Camera Store TV
the nex 7 and Leicas 35mm summilux would be my dream camera.
@mrdg12 The LA-EA2 adaptor does a great job, but remember that you will lose a 1/3 stop of light, and the Sony A mount lenses do not have stabilization. Also, when shooting video with autofocus, the LA-EA2 fixes your aperture at F3.5. Of course, the current Sony E mount lens line is quite small, so some a mount lenses would be a good option until the NEX lens line grows a bit. I'm not a huge fan of variable aperture zooms myself. Jordan @ The Camera Store TV
@snifnscratch i see .. thats great idea . still U didn't answer my main Question which is (( can the NEX7 perform as much as canon 60 d )) ??? i will buy some of the lenses U mentioned but still i wanna know the camera performance itself ?? please advice
What is the camera you are using filming test shot?
@surflou24 Absolutely, you will just need a sync adaptor for the minolta shoe!
@abslondon24 If the manual control dials, brilliant viewfinder, higher resolution, and manual movie mode appeal to you, than absolutely. Jordan @ The Camera Store
Amusing and good info. The bad guy (Ryan ?) at 2:50, with a knowledge of new Sony cameras, makes me laugh every time.
Will the NEX-7 have AEB of up to -2, 0, +2 or will it be limited to the .7 like the NEX-5 ?
@TheCameraStoreTV thanks a lot ! really appreciate it :)
I have to know....Is there an adapter that will allow me to use my Canon lenses? Will is allow me to retain autofocus? Also, I use radiopoppers to control my canon speedlights. Will this work on the NEX7? If so I am pre-ordering this camera pronto!
@SoccerDudeGuy23 We shot this video with the Panasonic AF100, with a Sennheiser G3 system for the lapel mic. Any more questions, send me a message. Jordan @ The Camera Store TV
sir wht camera did you use for your video?"
does the nex 7 shoot raw while on auto? i have the lx5 and it wont shoot auto while on raw. thanks in advance!
So Is The NEX-7 Out In Stores Yet ? Or Online To Buy ? If Not When Will It . Where
i just ordered the nex 7 with the 18-55 kit lens. many people say that i should get a better lens for it since that lens wont bring out the maximum potential of the camera. i still have time to cancel my order and may get just the body and get a separate lens atleast the zeiss. what is your expert opinion about this? help!
@drawab1 The image quality from the NEX-7 is quite a bit better than the 60D. I still like to have an optical viewfinder when shooting action, but for everything else, the NEX-7 does it all in a much more portable package. Jordan @ The Camera Store TV
When is it launching worldwide?
@TheCameraStoreTV Thanks Jordan! I guess that makes A77 the better choice (if size is not a priority) although the mirror loses some of the light...
@TheCameraStoreTV Thanks a lot bossman!
It's the best built in EVF I've ever used. If there's a better one out there, I haven't seen it.
