Sony NEX-7 Review

In this video, we'll take a look at the new breed of mirror-less cameras that are being introduced to the market. Basically mirror-less cameras are designed to direct the image from the sensor straight to an electronic viewfinder, effectively bypassing the traditional mirror reflex system found in traditional SLR and DSLR cameras.
By doing away with the traditional design, these cameras can be made much smaller and combine some of the best features of DSLR cameras and point-and-shoot. The size and ergonomics are unbelievably good. The low light performance and resolution are on par with most modern DSLR's. You also have the option of interchangeable lenses. And because the sensor is so close to the lens flange, if you can find an adaptor you can use almost any lens you want on these things. Old C-mount television studio lenses? Obsolete Canon FD manual focus lenses? No problem! Get a $30 adaptor for the lens you want to use and you're in business!

Have had a D70 for a week now using the stock 55mm lens, a 18mm up to a 100-400mm telephoto and this camera is awesome! No real video shot yet, buying a motion slider this week to try it out. This camera with a EFS 17-85mm lens is damn near foolproof, yet can handle any M shot. Love the touch fold out screen too!

The screen menu is as far as I'm concerned, is better than that of the a6000 series, right up to the a6500. The weak point is the setup menu. It's still ranks up there as a great camera and suitable for most needs.

You can buy these for 150-300 on Ebay all day long in 2021, this is one of the best deals in photography especially if you love vintage glass! Some of my favorite photos ever were done on this camera and even did some corporate photo shoots with it!

Hi Ted, another very informative video. Thanks to you and some research, you've opened my mind to mirrorless cameras. I'm looking at a Samsung Nx1000, and was wondering if you know if one could mount old 35 mm camera lenses with an adapter the same way you've done with your nex 7. The NX 1000 seems like a well performing camera for its cost, but I don't want to get it if I can't mount all my vintage glass. If you have any knowledge of this, I'd appreciate it if you could let me know. Thanks a lot.

great video, thanx. The NEX7 has an awesome sensor - I have it as well as NEX5n as well as OMD-5 and Fuji X100s, Pansonic GX1 and other mirror-less. I love the Fuji colors and love the menu systems from Olympus and Panasonic. My conclusion is that the NEX7 has the best Image Quality of all the Mirror Less cameras out there. If only NEX7 had the OMD-5 menu system and flash functions :) I like the OMD-5 and X100s but always go back to NEX7 when I want the top IQ. Hope NEX8 will be out soon

Awesome vid. I have a rather interesting question. Do you feel like modern digital cameras have too many features? I ask this because if you shoot in RAW to get the best quality, and best flexibility in post, then all you really need is the exposure triangle settings. It just seems to me like many settings are there as add-ons that, at least for me, wouldn't get used. LOL

It occurs on the NEX cameras's near the 30 mns mark. So you may need to back off the limit and let it cool down 5 10 mns. That means planning out your shot. Hope that helps.

interesting review, about the lenses I would say at the beginning (a year or two ago) it was really cool to be able to use third party. It's still cool, but the prime lenses (50, for me ) are outstanding the only difference between the 50 and a summicron 50 is really a different character of the lenses, not one being better than the other.

nice to hear that you like mirrorless cameras... absolutely check out some c-mount lenses, some of them are real gems and unsinkable deals! Fujinons,Cosmicars,Computars .. and if u want to spend a little more Angenieux,Kern and Schneider. my favorite c-mount are Fujinons, you get small ,fast, precise focusing and close focusing...just dont do under 35mm with Nex..and you have to mod them a little ;) thnx for excellent videos .

... If you want a manual focus SLR, the old Minoltas are a good choice, there are a lot of great Minolta MC and MD lenses out there and they mostly are quite cheap because they don't fit on any newer SLRs or DSLRs. The X-500(X-570), X-700 or XG-7(XG-11) would be good choices.

  • @sayhellototheNSA

... If you want an autofocus SLR with an "electronic rangefinder", you should take a look at the 'Pro' bodies from the late 90ies and early 2000s. The Nikon F100 would be my choice but should probably decide based on the lenses you want to use (and that you can afford).

... If you want a rangefinder camera, you could take a look at the relatively affordable Voigtländer Bessa R series or the Minolta CLE (both with lightmeter and Leica M-mount) if you want one with interchangable lenses. There are also a lot of fixed-lens rangefinders from the 70ies, many of which can be had for very low prices, the Yashica 35 GX would be my choice. ...

Is the NEX7 still worth getting, i intend to upgrade from my trusty Sony A350 to something newer (with better Image quality, higher resolution and better noise performance.). I do Landscape (a mix of digital and 4x5), as well as studio photography (still life mostly, and some portraits here and there). I have a few analog lenses that don't have sufficient back focus for the A350, so my thought was to go for a NEX7.

There are e mount lens adapters that will allow you to use older Hasselblad lenses on your Lunar. I may do that myself with the lens from my Hasselblad 500CM, but I'm not sure that the results will make it worth while. Not full frame but it could be interesting.

  • @lbochtler

Vikingdescendent i allready use 3 adapters for my A mount, fujica and minolta lenses. One thing that would be interesting with medium format lenses on mirrorless cameras is the leaf shutter and its flash sync speed. Though i dont know if using it is posible with current adapters. Medium format wise im looking into the Pentax 645D. Though adapting the lenses would need to be done via a 645 to k mount fallowed by a k mount to e mount adapter. Mostly due to the photodeox adapter directly from 645 to e mount is aperently not very well made. If your wondering what i shoot, its a combinatiom of landscape and studio photography (mostly still life).

I know it's all down to the budget, in terms of comparison and choosing one mfer over another, but try the Pana GH2 (some bargains to be had now), the new GH3 or G6. Sony, well, not so many lenses and there many more for the four-thirds design (best are the most recently released with IOS). There are tons of videos on YT using the GH2 and the new GH3. Enjoy.

What do you mean by "rangefinder"? SLRs and rangefinders are different types of camera, unless you mean the "electronic rangefinder" or focus indicator that many autofocus SLRs have for manual focus. For film cameras with interchangable lenses the camera body has nothing to do with the image quality except in so far as it determines which lenses you can use. Which camera body you choose should depend on features, available lenses and ergonomics. ...

The RX100 and the Alpha's have a nice menu, like you said similar to Nikon and Canon Just feel OMD-5 and Pen P5 have a great menu system. Fuji not bad and what helps their system is the Q button or quick menu button - The NEX menu system has to go :) I hope NEX8 has a mode dial and 2 FN buttons and the RX100 menu or something similar to the OMD-5 menu - as Sony now owns % of Olympus

Just checked your video. Thanks Ted. I bought my NEX-7 in 2012 I think, and it is still going strong, although the screen is no longer working and starts looking flimsy. I fitted a Contax/Zeiss 45mm Planar f/2 lens (I also use the 90mm Contax/Zeiss Sonnar), considered to be in its time, the best lens in the World. Not sure this is true, however, whenever I am not moving too much or if the body is on a tripod, the sharpness is incredible. Unfortunately, I mostly shoot handheld and it is not stabilized... The lenses are fitted with a Metabones adaptor which keeps getting loose and is a pain sometimes to put back together. It is heavy also, as well as being expensive. Not sure whether Metabones manage to manufacture a better Sony to Contax G adaptor. Please check my Instagram account if you'd like too, where a third of my photos there, posted after those about Karachi and Bucharest, were taken with the Sony NEX-7. Hoping to get a full frame camera with a Sony sensor whenever that's possible. Thinking of the RX1rII or latest.

William Lesourd - Photographer hi just out of curiosity, how is the manual focusing works on Contax g lens?

  • @WilliamLesourd

    @WilliamLesourd

    6 жыл бұрын

XY Zhou : well, with manual focus assist (where the image is zoomed in electronically so you see what you are shooting closer) and the peaking focus assist (the yellow, red... outline), you can get by. But you have to be fast, or you will miss shots. And I missed loads of them. I guess there is nothing like an accurate and fast autofocus lens. Otherwise, if speed and reactivity is not the essence, the Contax/Zeiss lenses are true jewels. Not sure about the 28mm which I don't own (I used to, on the Contax G2, but I never liked that focal). The 45mm and the 90mm are as good. Coupled with the beautiful sensor, you can get to shoot magnificent photos.

Hi Thanks for the reply. The mannual focus part does not bother me as I shoot 35mm film with rollei 35se pretty much all the time. What I concerned is that the lenses for G contax are usually more for auto-focus, as in I am not 100% sure if they can be used for manual focus easily. I cannot see a focusing scale on the lens. The manual focusing system on it is machenical isnt it?

  • @WilliamLesourd

Sony considers the NEX and now A5000/6000 for beginners - total lack of quality lenses for this APS-C sensor bodies - Sony is forcing more advanced users to buy the A7/r - FF - the dilemma is the size and weight of FF lenses - so for example Sony will not produce a 70-200mm F2.8 for the A7/r only the crazy expensive 70-200mm F4.0 and it is still huge and large and heavy for the small A7/r body - I have gone M43 as there is a huge selection of nice lenses - perfect size and weight balance - Fuji X line is attractive as it has more lenses and Fuji always has a nice color tone - but to me the downside is no IS in the Primes - with say Olympus OMD-em1 you have 5 axis In Body IS - so one automatically gets a Prime with IS which is awesome - The new Sony A6000 has some improvements like the menu and faster focus for moving objects - but a miss due to lenses - also no Touch LCD and Touch To Focus which is on the Olympus OMD's and the Panasonic GX7 for example - just fantastic - rather then moving a focal point up up up left left up - one just puts the finger on the point to focus and it can even fire at the same time - Nex 7 still a decent camera - but menu system horrible - lacks manual dials - Tri Navi buttons to soft - Images are quite sharp - but color tone a bit cold (but can be altered in software if images taken in RAW) Not all have good enough eyesight to be on manual focus with some Leica lens -

I do normally use a camera without one, but for my next camera I want one.

Yeah the NEX 5R was absolutely perfect at it's price but there's not audio support, except for Sony's shitty proprietary stereo mic

ETMO Its probably to annoying to use a Zoom H1 and a lav and sync it in post i would assume. Also the A6300 has a mic jack. Just avoid misusing a shotgun, as so many are tempted to do... Use a Lav instead...

Damn Good Camera! I enjoyed your review. This camera also works great for time lapse with this little remote intervalometer: tempus.bymac.org

The crop factor makes a lot of the older lenses unusable at the moment. Even in the Ricoh GXR with the 1.5 crop, a 50mm prime is essentially 75mm, a little too long for a walkaround lens. Furthermore, L39 glass tends to have a relatively far minimum focal distance. It can be pretty annoying to have to be a meter away if you want to just shoot your friends across the table. I can't wait until we get full frame sensors down to a reasonable price in the near future.
