Sony NEX-5 In 2024: Is It Any Good?
The Sony NEX-5 is a fascinating camera. The ability to use E-Mount lenses makes this camera shine! The photo capabilities are really strong, but the video is severely lacking!

I shoot with the Nex-5N and it goes really Well with a 55-210 mm lens🥰
Hey I only paid $50 for mine a couple of years ago. I hacked some glass lenses out of some quality point-and-shoot 35 mm cameras and I solved the age-old problem of how to save money while shooting film. I have a closet full of cool film cameras and that's where they're staying. I also have an nex-6. I hate the menu on these cameras, the colors need some serious tweaking sometimes but other than that they're pretty awesome and fun to use. There are a lot of pretty good third-party lenses these days that are pretty cheap. So for the cost of a few rolls of film and developing you can take a couple hundred thousand + pictures.
I bought this camera when it first came out many moons ago, and used the crap out of it. Eventually, even though it is decently compact, it got unwieldy to lug around, so I switched to an RX-100 MII. That was my go-to for years. As with most others, before long, I stopped carrying a camera altogether. Recently, I found my NEX-5 again buried in my closet, so I decided to give it another whirl. I am falling in love again! I just pair it with a Sigma fixed 30mm lens, and it’s magnificent!
This was my first "serious" camera (an ILC) that I bought around 2011. At the time there were only 3 emount lenses available : the 18-55 kit zoom, 16mm pancake and the silver 18-200 mm zoom. The NEX-5 actually takes quite nice photos and is so compact that with the the 16mm pancake (not a great lens) or the newer 16-50 kit power zoom it is practically the size of a point and shoot. I bought it as a travel and casual use camera but it really taught me a lot about settings and how to use them in different situations. Although I took 90% still photos as far as videos go, i did use it to film some dance performances for a friend. The goal there was not to be "artistic" but simply to film the dancing from a fixed location (tripod) and capturing the whole dance head to toe with no angle changes or cuts so I filmed using a tripod. Despite the limited options, it did teach me about exposure in darker venues when filming. and the footage was fine as a simple unpretentious recording of the dances. I found the menu system quite easy to master, possibly because I was not used to other systems so had no habits in that regard. I believe the NEX-5 was aimed at amateurs wishing to move up from using a point and shoot in Auto mode, Lastly, the camera was a conversation piece at the time. Professional photographers came up frequently to look at it when I was at events as they had never seen anything quite like it. I eventually upgraded to the a600o, largely to get a viewfinder and later to the a6300 for it's weather resistance, improved viewfinder and AF/MF/AEL switch. After about 4 years I am now looking at the a6700 for the IBIS in a weather resistant APS-C body (finally !) , the improved viewfinder, and improved tracking and focusing. May get the ZV-E10 as well for it's ease of video and web cam use. It's been an interesting journey thus far.
After this video, this camera is going to be around $200+

I don't anticipate that will happen... as this camera has been out for 13 year and is very prevalent in the used camera market. Especially overseas... an overseas seller most likely won't change their pricing based on a few KZread videos. And if they do... there are better cameras in the $200 price point like the Sony NEX-7, Sony A5000, etc.

Started out on a NEX-5N, and I loved that little camera. I sold it a long time ago when I got an A6000, but that little camera served me well. The form factor was awesome, the body was so damn thin! I'm very happy with my A7R3 now tho.

Around 2015, I purchased my first "serious" camera (an ILC). Only the 18-55 kit zoom, the 16mm pancake, and the silver 18-200 mm zoom were available at the time as emount lenses. With the 16mm pancake (not a fantastic lens) or the more recent 16-50 kit power zoom, the NEX-5 is virtually the size of a point-and-shoot camera and captures rather decent pictures. I bought it to use on trips and occasionally, but it actually taught me a lot about settings and how to use them in various scenarios. I did utilize it to record some dance performances for a buddy, even though I mostly captured still photos when it comes to films. there is a purpose Sony nex 5 is beast

Picked up a Sony NEX-5 full spectrum converted for IR photography for £300. P.S. Im on Pentax ecosystem, so i can just get an adapter (speed booster) to use all my manual lenses
I've got this and a canon d2000 and I prefer the original nex 5 tho I'm going to be getting a nex 6
It's a great camera, even if little lacking on megapixels and other functionality. My baseline is NEX-5N, due to 16mpx and touch screen. NEX-5 is nice for converting into IR, UV or Fullspectrum camera, there it gives so much more milage still. I typically go for the IR conversion (essentially it's just removing the IR/UV blocker from front of the sensor, and adding IR filter to lens). Re-selling as IR camera also bumps up the resale value considerably. Every now and then i see NEX-5 below 100€ with a kit lens, so essentially after selling the kit lens, the NEX-5 is couple tenners in price. Which is amazing for how good it is, it's Nex after all. There's two customizable buttons where you can have 1-4 customs functions (Soft key B & C). Since i mostly use vintage glass, my Soft key B = MF Assist, and Soft key C (the back dial button) is setup for ISO, White Balance and Creative Style. It's good like that. The menus might be a bit outdated, but i like them all the same. I find it easy to navigate through, and once you set-up the settings for first time, there's not much need to return. I shoot mostly in Aperture priority, so that makes it even more simple.

Hey Kraig, great video! I had a question, probably pretty beginner but when I go to take a pic with my vintage adapted lens, the screen/viewfinder will be exposed right, but when I take the photo, it comes out way over-exposed. Is there a setting I should check into? Thanks in advanced!
@kraigpruett
11 ай бұрын
Hmmm. It could be a few things. The worst case scenario is that your shutter is malfunctioning and isn't closing all the way when you take a photo. I have seen this problem occur when shutters begin to go bad. It still attempts to take a photo but the camera can't fully close the shutter for the correct time. If you are shooting in manual exposure, and it looks correct on the back of the screen, I can't think of many other reasons why your sensor would be over exposing the image accidentally, unless it was a shutter problem.

never seen this for 100$
sorry but it cost 650$ in my country
I still use mine all the time, I also own the 18-200 lens with it ( the silver early one with image stabilization ) and the big flash unit. Video? not really but those mini DV camcorders were still big in those days. what i miss most is a hot shoe mainly for use with a good microphone or a even better flash and a optical view finder. but for photos (I'm a non pro) it's more than good enough.
Cute camera, wonderful for a child to learn on or someone who likes a very small camera in their purse, bag or pocket. As a photographer for the best part of 40 years, I rate stills far above video. Which leaves me aghast as to why you get off that horse so fast. Video is OK but who is really going to care besides your client. Far more attention needs to be put on stills where you will make pictures that mean something. It is a slice in time, it is a record of an event or a city on the verge of change. It is much preferred when sharing photos with friends directly or on social media. This is where many of you KZreadrs kinda fail. Stills is an art. Video is something that will get lost unless there is a very specific reason for it. A till can be put on a wall, a book for people to view. Requires no special equipment other than a frame. It captures an event that can't be replicated. It is more a time machine when you look back through photos of your family, vacations and friends. Where the video? Who cares.
It's not the camera but lens. Nex-5 photos real suck with 16-50 the kit lens.
