Sony DSC-HX300 Extensive test in Roma

Hi Followers,
some weeks ago a friend of mine told me that he choose this Sony DSC-HX300 bridge camera as his B camcorder because of the picture quality, the 50X zoom, the autofocus, and because a US magazine tested it against the Panasonic DMC-GH3 and they wrote that the HX300 is better; so I decided to try it... I hope that you will enjoy my Sony DSC-HX300 Review/ extensive test.
The shots were made at 1920x1080@50p, but, as usual, KZread reduced framerate to 25p. Video was exported by ivsEdits as an .MP4 (H264) file at 20Mbps and preserved most, if not all, video details, but most of them were lost due to the KZread compression.
BTW, here is what I think about this camera. I had no much time to test it before shooting, so probably I could have got better results in the night shots using the full manual mode.
The HX300 provided me very good results. The 50X zoom allowed me to catch any distant subjects with a wonderful detail. The servo is good but the zoom lever is not progressive like the one of a true camcorder. During Zoom IN, most of times it hasn't a constant speed. Autofocus is good, as well as manual focus. You can use the ring on the lens for manual focus or zoom. In manual mode, a rotary button allows you to choose which feature to handle (ISO, IRIS, Exposure Time) easily and quickly, like on a true prosumer camcorder. When the light is good, images are wonderful, few camcorders can do better, while with low light, it is good but not like a modern camcorder like a JVC GY-HM70. Another weak point is the rolling shutter, that is the true enemy of this camera. When you have a so long focal lenght, any camera movement, provides large movements on far subjects, so vertical lines can be distorted. This won't happen if you will use a steady tripod. Take a look at the Train Test. There is much skew. Built in microphone is good, but there isn't a mini jack to connect an external one, as well as there is no way to place a microphone or led light over the camera. From this side, the newcomer DSC-HX400, that is an evolution of the HX300 (very similar to it), will have the slide with the Sony cold shoe for an external microphone (but not mini jack, so you will be compelled to choose a Sony MIC, and not a different unit like Rode Videomic Pro).
Conclusions: the camera is very good and cheap. With few modifications it could be a camcorder killer (jacks for microphone and headphones, less rolling shutter, larger sensor for bokeh and low light sensitivity).
Bridge cameras are evolving much faster than DSLR, who knows, maybe in some years they will replace low and mid level Reflex cameras.

P.S. Do you want my opinion about the pictures that the HX300 produces? They are very nice, under all light conditions. I was able to make good hands free shots with 1/8 exposure time, that was not possible with my old bridge. If you are a friend of mine on Facebook you can see some of them into the album "Biking in Roma" (most are made with an LG GT540 ancient smartphone).

Being displeased I allow myself to disturb you! When I bought this Sony DSC-H300 camera, I really did not expect these results! My smartphone makes more beautiful photos! ! ! When the first time I contacted the customer service Sony I was advised to buy a tripod to do the photo so that's what I did! Like using a camera only with a tripod one feels like going back to the antiquity of photography! I used my smartphone more than the camera. So I dropped the camera error! ! ! This new year I wanted to use Sony DSC-H300 with his tripod the problem is that even with his tripod the pictures are blur not all the time but too often, so I recontacté the customer service and there thank you Mr mohammed, he replies with a letter written in advance and if you write to him while taking the trouble to explain to him he sends you the same copy and paste without having the trouble to answer especially to your problem because the guarantee is finished then Sony And mohammed have nothing more to do! While you had reported the same problem when the unit was 1 week so under warranty, thanks Sony

Hello Sylvain, please note that the Camera under my test is DSC-HX300 that is different from H300. H300 was a very cheap and very old bridge camera, using a CCD sensor Vs. the CMOS one of the HX300. If you have a recent high-end smartphone, I'm sure that it will make better pictures. I was impressed by the photographic modules of Samsung Galaxy S6 and S7, they'd just need a zoom lens :-)

Hi Harshal kale , are you referring to still images or moving ones? I didn't tryed the Canon SX50, so I can't make any comparisons, but the HX300 features high performances in both fields.

hi Paolo Castellano , Thanks for your reply. I was referring to all sort of image quality. Moving, Still, Low light.... but anyway, i bought HX400 now. It has same configuration of HX-300 with addition of WiFi, GPS and view finder sensor. The image quality is good. Trying combination of different settings to get results like DSLR ;-)

Hi, I'm glad that you like it, thank you. I hope to test soon the HX400V. Some time ago there were 2 versions of it available, and I can't find the CCD version; on sony website, HX400 and HX400V share the same tech spec sheet.
How do yoi get the clips to your phone
muy buena cámara, excelente imagen y video, de donde se baja el editor que mencionas tiene todo lo que otros tienen como el vegas o el premiere por ejemplo, permite cortar, copiar, pegar, modificar sonido, agregar sonidos en pistas diferentes, etc ??. Buen video el que lograste, me impresiono la distancia que estabas de la cúpula y cuando haces el zoom, puede verse a la gente en ella, increíble.

Paolo Castellano cuando haces el zoom en la filmación, esta activado el zoom digital porque con el zoom optico de 50x no se llega a esta distancia que esta la cúpula, digo, cuales fueron las características puestas en la cámara para hacer el video con respecto a zoom, zoom digital, formato de película, etc

Hi Eduardo, digital zoom "disabled", the camera has 1200mm of focal lenght. Image is not crisp because I hadn't a tripod, and the camera suffers of rolling shutter. With a tripod it would have been much better.
Can you do slow motion effect with this software?

Hi Damion, yes, you can and it is probably the best, especially on interlaced footage.

Volevo solo farti alcune domande; dovrei andare a NY quest'estate per un paio di settimane e ovviamente la cosa che mi preme sapere è la qualità delle foto notturne (senza treppiede), ad esempio dall'Empire, dove si vedono tutti i palazzi illuminati. Tu che ne dici? La qualità video notturna non è per niente male, e le foto invece? I video qualità giorno sono davvero belli. Essendo una completa principiante non voglio passare direttamente a una reflex, anche perchè pagherei la macchina con i miei soldi. Quindi mi consigli questa o c'è qualcos'altro sul mercato allo stesso prezzo con qualità migliori? Per favore, rispondimi. Scusa per il disturbo e grazie in anticipo.

Ciao, le foto sono ottime, anche quelle notturne. Sono riuscito a fare delle foto notturne, a mano libera, anche con esposizione 1/8s. Con questo budget credo che difficilmente si possa acquistare qualcosa con qualità migliori, ma chissà, da qui alla prossima estate potrebbero anche uscire nuovi prodotti.

You can set manual focus and it is easy to use it via the big on lens ring. The battery is not so big, so I suggest to get a couple of spare units.

+Nicola Cantagallo Ciao Nicola, dipende dalle tue necessità; se ti occorre un tele spinto, non hai opzioni simili su una reflex, ed inoltre puoi passare in un attimo da una focale 24 a 1200mm. Se vuoi invece il massimo della qualità fotografica, una "buona" reflex o mirrorless è superiore.

Scusami ho anch'io una sony del tuo stesso modello l'ho comprata proprio vedendo il tuo video, ma mi spieghi come hai fatto la ripresa in manuale in quei frame del cavalcavia in notturna? Dal menu non mi permette di andare in manuale, la macchina fa tutto in automatico. Grazie

Ciao Lilli, la fotocamera non l'ho più da molto tempo, per cui non ricordo esattamente ciò che ho fatto. Di sicuro è più facile a farsi che a dirsi, devi mettere il selettore in modalità video, poichè se lo lasci in AUTO, che ti permette anche di registrare video tramite il tasto REC posteriore, non puoi fare nulla, mentre in video puoi intervenire su differenti aspetti della ripresa. Ho nostalgia della HX300, spero che tu possa divertirti molto con essa. Saluti, Paolo

:-) no, no external mic input (I think you can add a directional one to the HX400 over the hot shoe mount) and no headphone output

Hello, Yes, it is still a good camera. The real problem is that you can't get good night pictures (and especially videos) without using the flash.
Hi, where can get tutorials for ivs vedio edit? i am using vsdc editor, but after editing and conversion the quality drops. even after selecting 60 fps. But in your video the quality is excellent. please guide me. i am making short film on particular bird.

Yes, it is true. I was worried because the KZread compression blurred lots of details :-) It is possible that I will make a comparison with the GH4 :-)

daylight pictures are still good, and the same if you will you the flash, but otherwise low light performances are not fair.

CIao, secondo me non sono confrontabili. Sulla 1200D dovresti avere un corredo ottiche pazzesco per poter avere lo stesso range focale, che va da 24 a 1200mm.

Escludendo le ottiche, la qualità in se com'è? Ho letto che la hx300 o anche hx400v hanno un obbiettivo moolto più piccolo rispetto alla 1200d, e volevo sapere quindi questo quanto ne faceva risentire.
Just a little thought on this camera by a former owner. It really sucks. The very first photo you'll take in a non-well-lit environment will make you very disappointed with your purchase. This video is awesome and well made, but it really does not remarks how bad this camera is when it comes to talk about sharpness and quality of the sensor. (without even talking of dynamic range or other technicalities!)

Hello Thomas, the HX300 is very old now, technology runs... It was a nice camera with a great lens but with cheap sensor and electronic viewfinder. RX10 M4 would be its natural evolution, but is too expansive...
