Sony A7siii Underwater Test Footage - Nauticam WACP-1, Keldan Lights - 4k HDR

My first test footage from my Sony A7Siii underwater in Nauticam Housing.
I've been diving with the team from Prodivers Maldives at/and around the dive sites of Lily Beach Resort, South Ari Atoll in the Maldives.
The footage is recorded in 4K 60FPS HDR HLG2 which means there is almost no colour grading needed.

    Nice footage Daniel! The corners are so sharp, WACPI 🙏. Not quite sure about the HLG but that's personal preference 😉👍 I would interpret the 60fps footage to 23,976fps for nice Slow motion

    Thanks Oliver! The A7siii with Nauticam WACP-1 is awesome! This video was my first two days with this equipment in the water and just a few days later the footage is improving day by day... HLG HDR looks best on HDR screen if you have one (eg iPhone 11 upwards or MacBook Pro etc. Etc) Also - you can run high ISO’s with this setting (HLG2) with minimal noise and best of all it needs very little colour grading - it is the future 🤓 and thanks 🙏🏼 regarding the slowing down... I’ll post some more footage in the next few days when I get some time (and bandwidth to upload! 🤘🏼)

    Yeah give it a try - the increased colour gamut of BT2020 is worth it. You can run up to 12800 ISO, and the lower ISO’s don’t suffer from the terrible noise below 12800 that slog profiles do. I’m also testing not using a keldan red filter, as with a translucent wb card and manual wb with each shot it doesn’t seem necessary to have a colour correction filter, then to correct that with manual wb again and lose the stops of light... I’m not 100% on my findings with this yet though.

    Gorgeous colours, and also very sharp corners. I use a similar rig, but I prefer to use the WWL-1B because I like to have the flexibility of Changing focal length underwater. Instead of the Keldans, I use Kraken Hydra 15000’s because I am poor, and actually cannot see the difference in the quality.

    Cheers Rod - I know what you mean with regards to the WWL and having the versatility underwater…. Having spent q fair amount of time with the WACP-1 I’ve found I can almost achieve everything I want, without needing to change (macro aside)… My latest video where I removed a lot of the narrative 🤦🏼‍♂️🙈 shows some more of the range achievable with WACP-1, wide to close ups. I think the fundamental is enjoying the process of discovery, albeit through the diving itself or videoing, or a combination of both. Best wishes.

    Nice video ! Do you use manual mode or movie p mode to shoot video? Which focus mode do you use, eg wide, spot? How did you shoot moray eel so that it gets sharp? F value higher than 14? Which iso and focus mode? Thanks

    Thanks! I use manual mode, wide focus... I think the key is using Nauticam WACP-1 lens which allows massive range, and keeps the sharpness. It's a big piece of kit, but you can see the results.

    Hi Daniel, at what depth you've filmed this. I wonder if the AF12B filters could me used from ~5m to ~20m and below maybe. Have you considered Keldan 8x Lights or the 4x are quite enough?

  • @DanielFrench

    @DanielFrench

    Hi Svilen - the footage is from various depths around 15 - 25m. The AF12B filters are my go-to filters from 8m to 30m. I would not use them shallower than 8m though as they add a little too much blue into the scene - you can remove them underwater though when shallower than 8m. Yes I did consider the keldan 8x lights, but the 4x are plenty strong enough! And using natural light always looks best in my opinion, so the lights are just to add some extra illumination when required. I’ve been away for almost a month in the Maldives, and have a lot of footage to upload when I return to the UK in a week or two, so please subscribe to see all the latest HDR HLG content 😎

    @@DanielFrench Thanks for the fast response! I am on a way of buying Keldan light and was wondering whether 4X will be enough but seems they are perfect. Do you use any other SF filter or just the -1.5 Red one? *I already subscribed! ;-)

  • @DanielFrench

    @DanielFrench

    He he - cool 😎 I only use the keldan -1.5 red filter (gel sheet version) as the Nauticam WACP-1 doesn’t have any space for a screw on filter. I also found the -3.5 filter just took out too many stops of light - maybe possible to use in Slog3 at 12,800 ISO, but for me the benefits of the increased colour space of BT.2020 HDR HLG is worth the comprise but this is personal preference.

    @@DanielFrench Thanks for the thorough reply. I will go with the -1.5 then as well. -3.5 filter always sounded as a too dark to me, but I've never tried one. Next thing on my buying list - 4X Keldans plus a -1.5 red filter :)
