Sony A6700: Updated thoughts after 3 paid jobs and 4 months of using it

Фильм және анимация

Some more thoughts: Kind of a long-term review of the Sony a6700. Used it for a few gigs and have some new thoughts on it. I will be keeping the camera for the foreseeable future and have no need to upgrade yet. If I were to freelance a bit more, I would probably get the Sony A7IV for the dual card slots and better EVF esp. since I don't shoot a lot of 4k60. If I'm just doing video projects, then the A7S3 or FX3 for the lowlight + dual card slots.

In response to DMs I have been receiving, I've created a small preset pack and LUT. Presets: joonrho.com/shop/p/sony-a6700-lr-preset-pack-1 These are presets that I have developed over the years and used extensively for past photos. LUT: joonrho.com/shop/p/base-lut-sony-s-log3 This is created from a colour-managed workflow for S-Log3 and should bring you to a strong starting point for grading. It would be great if you could support me by purchasing, but my goal is not to gate-keep so if it is cost-prohibitive please feel free to reach out to me on Instagram: instagram.com/joonrho/ Cheers, J

Thank you for your detailed performance reporting based on actual, real-world usage of the A6700. I, too, believe this is an outstanding camera value for any family or amateur photographer, especially if you're just starting out. You're getting essentially the very latest Sony technology from even their higher level full frame cameras in terms of auto-focus, picture and video quality and colour algorithms, etc. In short, you're basically getting an A7V, but with a crop sensor and only 1 card slot. As an amateur photographer who has had an A6000 since 2014, I can tell you that with APS-C, you are missing the full frame look and the higher level of detail and resolution that I regret not having for my travel pics, particularly of landscapes, having made use of the panoramic function especially. In short, for video and sharing pictures that will always be viewed on a monitor or TV, the value proposition of the A6700 can't be beat. The fact that you can also get incredible bird photos, due to the inherent additional crop factor of APS-C, and the availability of excellent telephoto lenses like the Sony FE 200-600 (full frame), makes this especially good for that. But if you want to take pictures that you might want to blow up and print to put on your wall, you will want an full frame format camera. I'm currently considering moving up to the Sony A7c II to get a full frame camera in a similar sized camera body to my A6000, but with the BIONZ XR processing chip in the A7RV/A6700. I think this will be my ideal camera for a while.

Oh wow I completely forgot about the a7cii haha, yeah that might be the way to go although I'm not entirely sure if I'm speaking out of my ass about the difference between apsc and full frame just to be completely honest haha. I feel it, but not sure if it's just bias. My bet would be that the lowlight capabilities would be better with the a7cii though so that might swing you. Regardless, hope you grab a camera you love or use tons!

Thanks a lot for your detailed walkthrough for your three shoots. I'm considering upgrading from my ZVE 10 to the 6700 to vlog. Do you mind sharing - how was the stabilization with the active steady shot for you, is it good enough for vlogging? I ask because I have PTSD from the ZVE10s terrible stabilization and my sore gimbal arm, so I'm considering getting the ZVE1 just to get the dynamics stabilization but it's a lot more expensive and then I'd have to upgrade my lenses to full frame. The a6700 has pretty good stabilization I probably will just get that but there's actually not a ton of footage I've seen yet on it.

  • @boywithacamera

I feel you on the sore arm! For what it's worth, all the footage in the third gig in this video was shot handheld with the default IBIS settings (standard I believe?) Couple of videos that might help in your search: IBIS comparison between various systems - kzread.info/dash/bejne/Y6GT26Z8mNOyqZM.htmlsi=FU8dmxAYFvYyClVn I would imagine with Active Steady Shot you're going to get the "stickier" IBIS on the a6700. I've stuck with standard IBIS to minimize this on recent cameras, but I hear that it works wonders on the ZVE1. Admittedly haven't used it much on the 6700 so can't comment on it too much. All the footage in this video was also shot handheld, but not a lot of movement so may not be all that helpful: kzread.info/dash/bejne/fX-qusRqadO6pbg.htmlsi=wzik_B3mDNLuoqi_ The a6700 feels similar to A7C IBIS, here is some A7C handheld (also standard IBIS settings) and some walking if memory serves me correctly: kzread.info/dash/bejne/dpqKuLdvhLa0ptY.htmlsi=x_eeMVie82IjE6M4 I've been meaning to do another follow up with the 6700 but not sure when I'll be able to get to it so hopefully that provides some help!

@@boywithacamera Ah interesting thoughts on IBIS. Yeah I went from a ZVE10 to a Pocket 2 so now I'm like a stickler for steadiness and no jitteries. Ah 2nd vid footage looked great - really like the chill music you picked with the sun setting vibe. Ahhh I see, ok this is super helpful. Yeah you got some beautiful shots - I think bc I move around a lot I might go for the ZVE1 with the dynamic stabilization or lean more on my Pocket.

Much appreciated! Strictly video-wise, they're neck and neck now that I understand colour grading a bit more than I used to. I might give the edge to the Canon R6ii for its build quality and better LCD screen/EVF. For lowlight, the FX3/A7S3 offer way more versatility with the high iso performance though. If I'm freelancing, I'd lean towards Sony personally because I know more Sony shooters if I need a second shooter or need to borrow something from a friend. I think the secondhand market is better here as well so that would play a factor.

I've had a similar issues with flash, though only during one shoot. I haven't updated to the newest firmware though, in the off chance that fixes it. It usually happened when I turned off the trigger to shoot without flash and then turn it back on. I would have to turn off the flash itself and then it would work fine. I was using Godox as well. Also I'd recommend the smallrig baseplate, I have bigger hands than most but it lengthens the grip enough that it's more comfortable.

If you're just doing photography then the a7c might be a good choice for the full-frame sensor, especially since you have the 90 and 55mm. If you are ever going to shoot video then 10-bit is a really nice-to-have feature so I wouldn't look at the a7c mark I now that newer options at similar prices but with 10-bit video are available.

You really want to stick with Sony Flashes for flash. Keep the battery charged, and it just works. I trip that you are comparing this to pro setups. This is NOT a professional camera, it is a gateway camera that gives you really good results. If you used a 50GMF1.2 and Sony flash I think you would be very happy with the results. As far as overheating in video that is only an issue with 4k60 and xavc-si and xavc-hs... Use xavc-s and 24/30 and you can shoot all day without overheating. As for the size, add the small rig grip, completely changes the personality of the camera. For SD cards you only need v90 for 4k120 and Xavc-si If you have the money, the 1655G is the best one to use of the zooms you mentioned. If you have the ff 20G, use that on the a6700 and you will change your mind about the quality you are getting. The FX30 advantage are the dual card slots and the ability to take CFa cards. Otherwise the a6700 is the better hybrid. Solid video and fair... Subbed Liked and commented

Hi there! Great content, subscribed! I'm in Canada and trying to decide between ZV-e10 ($900) and A6700($1900) for KZread simple language teaching video content (indoors) (with Sigma 16mm). I have lights and sound already. Any suggestion on which one I should go for? Many thanks.

  • @boywithacamera

    @boywithacamera

    5 ай бұрын

Hey, thanks for the kind words! It's awesome that you've prioritized sound and lighting. For a simple language teaching video indoors, my assumption would be that these factors are crucial: No 30min recording limit No overheating Ability to plug in the camera to power it Reliable autofocus Relatively easy-to-edit codec but manageable file sizes (assuming they're longer takes and you have a decent but not top-of-the-line computer) I'm not too familiar with the ZV-E10/no firsthand experience so I'd research based on those factors. If the camera is going to be stationary and you'll have ample lighting then things like ISO performance or IBIS probably wouldn't matter too much. One more thing might be to consider audio inputs if your microphone needs to be plugged into the camera. Hope that helps, let me know if you have any more questions!

Hey OP - I've been shooting most of my talking head KZread videos on my ZV-E10 and Sigma 16mm. If you have the budget and shooting in 10 bit for color grading is important (it hasn't really been for me) the a6700 seems awesome but for shooting talking heads on a tripod I can definitely recommend the ZV-E10. The image quality is great especially with the 16 mm. I usually shoot in 1080p so no overheating issues. If budget is important you I would recommend the ZV-E10. The biggest weakness of the ZV-E10 is the stability which is terrible, but that won't matter at all if you're on a tripod.

Great video, but there is definitely no relation between sensor size and sharpness of an image. Shooting environments, lenses (especially!) and various other factors may go into this, but sensors are sensors however large they are, and there's no such thing as a "sharper" sensor more than AA filters and megapixel count.

  • @boywithacamera

Thanks for the insights. Perhaps sharpness is the wrong thing to focus on. I did perceive what seemed like less details/information in the shadows (or maybe the image overall), however, even when shooting with flash. Any thoughts you could share on why that might be? Could it just be due to the lenses?
