Ғылым және технология

All my recommended gear & lenses for the a6500: geni.us/Sony_a6500
| The Sony a6500 is a faster and more stable version of the Sony A6300 with probably the best image quality and features like 4k video, slow motion, low light high ISO, IBIS, and features that should get the attention of photographers, vloggers, and video shooters. But sometimes a camera needs more than just an awesome spec list so let's take a look at the Sony Alpha A6500 Mirrorless camera Review

With 4k video, IBIS in body image stabilization, 11fps RAW bursts, great low light performance, log video, and a host of other options, it's easy to see why the A6500 is one of the best cameras around beating both mirrorless cameras and the best DSLR cameras from Canon & Nikon

I personally bought my A6500 as my outdoor/hiking camera, specifically for photography. I needed something more light weight when I go for long hikes. Even though my primary camera is a Canon 5D Mark IV, I'm absolutely happy with the A6500.

Can anyone tell me/confirm that this camera can handle high summer weather without shutting off. I shoot weddings with G7s and I love the camera but I love the higher iso of the sony's (previous a6000 owner) but the overheating in our hot summer weather made the a6000 to difficult to work with.

To get better battery life put the camera in Airplane mode. My buddy and I both just got the a6500 and made a video about it on my channel. There's a lot unique functions of this camera (and Sony's in general) that's buried deep in menus, etc.. takes time to get to know them all.

Hi, thanks for the review. I'm considering upgrading from a Sony A6300 (with the 16-50 kit lens) primarily because I want to improve the image stabilisation in my videos. Whilst I believe there's 'optical steady shot' in my lens, it's still quite jerky. Should I expect a significant improvement (steadiness) over my current A6300 + lens with a new A6500 (and a standard similar lens)? Many thanks.

  • @learningcameras

It seems like the biggest difference is the fact that IBIS is 5 axis giving you less warping and rolling. General stabilization seems ever so slightly improved from just the lens alone but not a massive difference

Done any testing on sony oss lenses on a6300 vs 6500? I know they're limited in number and not always the sharpest and i haven't seen a much info on these comparisons. The little I have found suggests handholding or monopod results will be dramatically better than w/ same oss lens on a6300 (especially in rolling shutter reductions from micro-movements). thanks.

review spot on - I first bought the NEX5n - then NEX7 - A6000 and A6300 and really still no 24-70mm F2.8 and no 70-200mm F2.8 in E-APS-C - amazing - just shows that Sony looks at the E APS-C system as a beginner cameras - Overheating in the a6300 big issue - and amazing that touch lcd is crappy - the IBIS is welcome but does it support dual IS ? most of their primes do have IS - so I am not upgrading for some time :( I do not expect many new Sony branded reasonably priced lenses any time soon

I do agree with many downsides that you pointed out in your review. For me, the image quality and the size of the Sony camera is fitted with my life style. Unfortunately, this A6500 comes out a bit late and some issues from A6300 are still there. So, I am still using my A6300 for a while until most issues got fixed. Very nice review and looking forward for the next one.

People are failing to realize there is no perfect camera.. This is a dedicated B camera for videographers..Great for gimbal use and hand held video footage..End of story..Still quite capable on the stills side with great glass.. I love this camera for those reasons but still rock a Nikon D810 for serious work of photography..Just tools people..

I agree mostly but not sure why this camera could not be used for serious pro work. If it is on a gimbal and that footage makes into the film that has generated money ....then its pro. If the images are good enough and the camera is being used by pros to take pictures for work .... its pro. I love you sentiment about cameras being tools though and I could not agree more with that. Its the person behind the cam not the cam itself. Some people get so hung up on brands that they miss new stuff or old stuff that is still amazing.

I don't agree with you about the 6500 being a B camera. The 6500 is very capable of taking professional photos and being a serious Camera. There are some people who take pictures for Natgeo using 10 year old 12mp cameras that look like they were taken on 3 thousand dollar cameras. One the biggest factors is what lens you use and how well you know how to use that lens and camera.

thanks dan.. great stuff, very inspiring. which settings do you use to shoot 120fps? If I switch to 120fps my S&Q settings are down scaled to 30p/30fps so the video export is already in slow motion. however, I would like to shoot 120fps but with a unchanged pace output/export and than scale down pace in premiere pro manually later on. So I am wondering which settings you use to film in 120fps? thx

I have also seen people say that they didn't have an issue with overheating. I did though much less often than I did on the A6300. Not sure if it's a camera thing or weather thing but there are absolutely differences out there. I didn't focus much on the app because there is nothing new there. It's the same functionality as the A6300

Enjoy your reviews. Very helpful indeed, as I was seriously considering this camera. I had hoped the overheating issue would have been resolved. I think Sony is overly obsessed with making it as tiny as possible at any cost. The G85 has a beefier chassis, and maybe this is why it doesn't have the same issue. Nor does the G7, GH4, and so on. Would be fun to have one to play around with, but I just could not trust one in production.

The A6500 and A6300 are essentially the same quality. I prefer the XT2 images out of camera but after some editing, I can do wonders with both and I would say the Sony takes an edge in low light performance. But I just love the Fuji to use and the lens lineup while somewhat small is more inclusive and less expensive for the lenses I like most. Tough call though. I do like the IBIS which the Fuji does not have and the A6500 is certainly faster

Compared to cameras 5 or 10 years ago and especially before that, we're laughing. It's so much easier getting great results these days, as we managed before high tech gear. It's just a question of ajusting. We can't blame our photographic tools. This camera, like many others on the market, are all good. That's what I tell people who ask me if I recommmend the camera I 'm shooting with. Also, the ability to review instantly what we shoot, is a huge advantage to get it right. How far can we take this technology, before it does everthing for us?

I'm about to take an EPIC trip to New Zealand, Fiji, and China and this might be my camera although I'm definitely considering the Fuji X-T2 as well.--------If you were me and had to go with two lenses for the 6500 camera what would they be for this trip? -- Or is there another camera and lens you might recommend? - I will be shooting outdoors (sunrises, sunsets, mid day, etc), but definitely some at night and some inside. Love shooting nature, landscapes, people. I'll also be shooting a bunch of videos of myself speaking to the camera and many times walking and speaking to the camera too. - Also what are your favorite one or 2 filters to use with the lens? - Any thoughts greatly appreciated! Sounds like an awesome trip! If I were to get 2 lenses, get an F4 zoom lens like the 16-70 F4 or the 18-105mm F4 and pair that with probably the Sony 35mm F1.8 OSS. I only use ND filters and only for video or when I need super slow shutter speeds like waterfalls. I know some people like circular polarizing filters but I rarely if ever use them.

Good review. Pity that SONY can't make these cameras without the over heating and low battery life issues. These are deal killers for video shooters, but less of a problem for still shooters. It is frustrating that SONY doesn't offer much in the way of affordable fast APS-C native lenses. F4 is just too slow. I shoot on a SONY FS5, and use mostly adapted Canon lenses, which are plentiful on the used market for less than half the cost of the G Master lenses.

I 100% agree with you. This camera provide epic video quality and I would have loved to buy it. But instead, I will happily buy the 80D because of what you have mentioned. I want to stick a camera on a tripod for 45 minutes - 1 hour and let it record a video, so everyone acts as natural, and then I will do the editing. Plus, as I wish for my camera to last long, I wouldn't wish to have a camera that's constantly overheating.

A6300 is better quality, especially in low light and better autofocus performance. But, the G85 has better ergonomics, less chance of overheating, built in image stabilization, a nice flip touch screen and, great lens selection at reasonable prices. You just need to figure out which is most important to you. If you are also shooting photos or shooting above 1600 ISO often, would definitely lean towards the A6300 but keep in mind you will need to spend a bit more money for decent lenses.

i'm consider to buy 6300 with other extra lense or 6500 with kit lense. which one should i get? is 6300 overheating and no IBIS issue does really matter for vlogging? thanks

  • @learningcameras

Without the IBIS, you will definitely want a lens with stabilization for vlogging. Definitely look at the Sony 18-105mm F4 OSS: amzn.to/2linFdO It has stabilization and a great zoom range. The nice thing about the kit lens is it is a bit wider at 16mm so better for vlogging most likely from that perspective and the step up from that is the 16-70mm F4 OSS but it is $900. Don't worry about overheating unless you record more than 20min straight of 4k video

Hey Dan great video you're one of the best gear reviewers in my opinion. Just want to ask your opinion about a topic . I'm literally torn between the a6500 and the Samsung NX1 . The lack of zooms , rolling shutter and the bad ergos of the Sony are the reasons . The NX1 although an old camera offers pretty much all of the features that the a6500 offers and the Samsung 16-50 f2-2.8 and 50-150 f2.8 are both beautiful lenses and I really don't want anything more than these two. I really want to ask you how viable would a choice of the NX1 be and how close it gets in terms image quality, low light etc comparing to the a6500 . Do you think it's kinda stupid to go to a two year old camera and neglect a brand new Sony a6500 ? I'm reminding these two samsung lenses are more than enough for my work , and I won't have a problem that Samsung has stopped supporting the NX1. Thanks in advance and please keep up the great work !

  • @learningcameras

    @learningcameras

    7 жыл бұрын

Thanks! At this point I would not buy an NX1. While I loved the camera, it seems clear that you are going down a dead end. I owned the NX1 for about a year and really wished Samsung had continued it but they did not. I wouldn't mind buying a 2 year old camera if there was a future for the brand but I would not buy a discontinued system. I would prefer to get the Sony and dealing with the shortcomings knowing that in 6-12 months there will be a Sony A7000 or A7SIII that make it even better. Go with a brand that you can continue to invest in.

I wouldn't normally add to a pissing contest like this but the shallower depth of field for a given FOV is not going to be fixed by a GH5, or GH6 or a GH7. A bigger sensor is always going to be a bigger sensor. Sony's APS-C sensor size just gives my pictures something I could not get with either my G1, GH1, or Oly EM-5 mark II, which I sold two weeks after buying. It also helps that - who are we kidding - there are higher quality primes available for Sony. The 55 1.8 is the sharpest lens I've ever used. And of course, full frame shooters might be in the opposite situation, and find APS-C to be dinky and limiting feeling. btw I was a VERY early adapter to mirrorless - bought a G1 the month it came out - but I'm very happy I moved to the Sony a6000. Will get the a6500 if the price comes down a bit in a few months. The image stabilization would be nice for my style of shooting. Yes if motion pictures were my main goal, I probably would have stayed with Panasonic and gotten a GH4; but it's only 10-15% of my use of the camera.

thanks for the awesome review - I am leaving at the end of the month for an Appalachian Trail thru-hike and sadly no matter how badly I want to, I can't take my Nikon DSLR - being able to take quality pics is really very important to me - I keep going back and forth between the 6500, the a7ii or the Fujifilm X-T2 - things like quality, low light ability, and weight are important and would love to be able to print some of my pics in larger sizes - is there one of those 3 you would recommend more for a backpacking epic trip?

  • @learningcameras

Great choices and a very tough call. To me, I would narrow it down by lenses. Look at the lens kit you would want, what it would cost, and if they have the lenses that you want. Fuji can get F2.8 zooms for APS-C and they are decently priced. Sony will require F4 zooms and will cost a bit more so if low light shooting is important, keep that in mind. Also, the A77II will require full frame lenses which even further increase the cost/size/weight. camera wise, all three are great cameras each with some advantages/disadvantages. The XT2 is the most robust of the 3 cameras I would say

Great and honest review. It helped me in my decision to opt for the Nikon D7500 in lieu of Sony a6500 for the following reasons. 1. Easy access to controls - better ergonomics. Already Nikon user so prefer the top LCD panel for easy settings in difficult situations. 2. Larger view finder and touch screen suitable for my age and eyes. I am 61. 3. Multiplicity of lense choices and option to get a prime 50 mm lens f/1.8 on offer along with kit lens 18-105 mm@1700 USD compared to 2174 USD for Sony a6500 with kit lens 16-50 mm. My interests include colourful folk art forms performed at night, outdoors and in low light. The other principal area is architecture and sculpture photography especially of the vast treasure trove of temple reliefs that abound in India spreading from 3 BC to the 14th century. I would have almost gone in for the Sony a6500 but the difficulties as above appeared to be an impediment as sometimes only a fleeting opportunity is available to capture a shot. Thanks. Keep doing the good work.

It looks like something like an A7000 is soon on the way...maybe 2-3 months out tops. Most likely Sony will continue the current trend of releasing a higher end camera for a higher price and leaving the current a6500 as a cheaper alternative though the retail price might drop a little. On the dream side of things we could see a stacked sensor like the A9 leading to 20fps+ frame rates with 4k 60 video. It's REALLY tough to judge Sony on this one. They continue to stun us on the tech side of things and they might step things up by going after the high end APSC cameras like the D500, XT3, 7DII rather than lower end ones like the Nikon D7500 and Canon 80D

It's definitely not mandatory...many professional video cameras shoot at a 1.3X crop (super35). It does typically give you better low light performance having a larger sensor and often more dynamic range. Full frame also means shallower depth of field which can be good or bad depending on how much you want in focus. I shoot with a GH5 often which is a Micro43 small sensor and am fine with it except for the more limited low light abilities.

Dan + anyone who wants to chime in, My 70D just failed on me, wont turn on (believe I'm having the motherboard issue), I'm considering getting a new camera and needing to make a decision relatively soon. I am a youtuber/photographer but my camera choice is primarily based around VIDEO. Currently you will find me using most often shooting with the canon 50mm f1.8 and the 24mm f2.8, I was considering purchasing the sigma 35mm but hadnt bought it yet. I only mention this to give you an idea of what I use and what sort of focal lengths I need..... Should I go ahead and jump into the a6500? I've window shopped this camera for a little while, I'm concerned of the overheating (although it is rare I film "NON-stop" over 30 minutes) but I don't want that to be a limiter. The battery life I could put up with... What kind of budget glass (if any) can I get on this camera? And how big of an issue is the auto-focus, I film myself, so I will be in situations that I cannot see whats going on obviously, is this a good "set and go" option sort of camera. I have found a 6500 for $1100, I really want to stay in that budget or below, since I'm going to have to acquire glass as well.... recommendations?

  • @learningcameras

    @learningcameras

    7 жыл бұрын

Hey. Autofocus on the A6500 is pretty good, enough that I would be fine relying on it for filming myself although I find Canon to be smoother and locks subjects slightly better. Budget glass for the A6500 is limited for zooms but the 35mm prime and 50mm prime are not horrible though still way more than the Canon versions. Without a flip screen, you can't monitor yourself while shooting either. Quality though on the A6500 is a huge leap forward from the 70D so if that is important to you, it might be the way to go. Other possibilities would be the Panasonic G85 if you can live without good autofocus or picking up a new Canon like the 77D or 80D which is almost the same for video but has higher bitrate recording options.

I think I'm going to go for the 6500 and probably just purchase a monitor for playback while on the tripod.

Yeah, that's fine. Get the 18-105mm F4 lens: amzn.to/2hu1qVH It's about $600 but there really isn't a cheaper zoom option that gives you anything close to this range/quality. You really need a constant aperture lens. B&H does have a 4% cash back with the purchase of this lens: bhpho.to/2v5Aa2A
