SONOS ACE - The headphones 5 years in the making
Ғылым және технология
Sonos has just announced the release of the new Ace, a pair of cinema first headphones. Why cinema first? Watch the full video to find out. This is about as much as I have learned about the Sonos Ace from the product announcement held for the media. I even had a dedicated session with Scott who is the product lead for Sonos Home theatre product line up and he gave me such insights and answered so many of my questions on the Sonos Ace! Enjoy this video where I share ALL that I have learned about the new product from Sonos!

Wonderful video Peter. Do you think that if you have a Vinyl player in the system, this TV audio swap will allow for vinyl listening if you can group the speakers?
Thanks!
This makes me want to push for visiting my company's location in Singapore some day ❤
Hi Peter, very detailed video as usual thank you. So without an Arc can you still get the cinema scape aspect?
Great explanation Peter - thx. I'm definitely the target market and have a beam 2 and Sub mini but can never crank it up to my liking in my living room because my wife and daughter always complains 🤪. It ticks most boxes for me and Airplay support will be the icing on the cake! Looking forward to your review 👍🏻
Peter, you are still the best Sonos reviewer out there, bar none. Your explanation of how the Ace uses Wifi vs bluetooth was the best I've come across. Given I have the complete Arc setup and live on a condo with upstairs neighbors, I'm really looking forward to trying out their True Cinema capability. So yes, I am definitely one of Sono's target customers. My pre-order is in. Btw, I received an email from Sonos back in March marking my 3-year anniversary of my Arc purchase. Included was a 15% discount code off my next purchase which expires next month. I held on to it for this very occasion so including tax I scored a pair for just over $400. Everything went according to plan :).
Weird there is no wifi. I was kind of counting on them also being like just another wifi/sonosnet device in the home and bluetooth on the go.
@PeterPee

Well, that was my expectation too. But then I got worried about the battery life, which is probably what was on their mind too. So the current wifi implementation is limited to when the sound is transferred from the Arc to the Ace.

Thank you! I always come right to you as soon as I see a new Sonos product or have an issue with any of my speakers. You always provide the best and most thorough information! I do want to tell you what my first thought was, when I saw these headphones : Can I play the headphones AND the speakers at the same time - because my stepfather is very hard of hearing and my mother is very sensitive to loud sounds. If they could use the ARC for her, and the headphones at different volumes, that would be AMAZING for both of them! I'm kind of sad that isn't a possibility. Perhaps Sonos will allow it in the future.

It doesn't sound like it's something difficult to do.
My only biggest concern, is getting it to do the music hand-off with Sonos Move, Era 300, maybe Era 100, and the fives. These are the devices in my opinion that are most commonly used with a record player (I use a move with my victrola stream so I can pick up around the house). Having the record player playback on the ace would be sweet! Also airplay being added hopefully would be software limited. These are the only two things stopping me. Now if I had a kid, I could probably overlook these, but fairly large alienation for Sonos die hards. Last note, for people crying about many things, the Ace has more features than nearly every sub $500 headphones.... So don't let the minor flaws outshine how great these are compared to their product category.
Hi Peter thank you for the great video🙌 may I just ask about the size and weight of the ace compare to airpods max? Thanks a lot 🙏
Great information as usual Peter. Got a pair of Aces coming in white for the Mrs and I. Hopefully a good solution for late night viewing.
Ordered these, as a full Sonos household the ability to get audio off my arc, and ideally the beam in my office soon will get a lot of use, especially at night when the kids are in bed

@@PeterPee I'd like to know if you can have more than 1 set connected to a single sound bar at once - use case being my elderly Aunt and Uncle - my Uncle is hard of hearing and struggles with hearing the TV, and if given a hearing aid either loses it or breaks it - so my aunt is stuck listening to the TV at what she finds an uncomfortable volume. They have an Arc setup already (they asked me what to get so they could get enough volume for him to hear), so I was thinking if they could have 2 of these connected at once they could both listen to the TV at a volume suitable to each of them.

Thank you for the content. Question, is the P2P connection from the Arc to Ace going to be lossless? If so what's the highest bitrate supported to say music playback?(44.1khz 16bit, 48khz,192khz...etc) Thanks again
Peter i know there has a lot being going on with Sonos at the moment but is the update good to go on the system. App all updated just want to know if the new update is good to download cheers
Good video. Can you tell me if these headphones connect to an Apple TV?
As someone not having other Sonos devices, will I be able to view content with Dolby Atmos/Spatial Audio on windows? Like movies with VLC?
Seems similar to Apple tv 4k + airpod pro 2/airpod max/beats studio pro/beats fit pro all of these have very good atmos playback with the apple tv 4k. They have very convincing surround capability. The Beats Studio Pro are actually a bargain for atmos sound, I bought some different earpads to make them a bit more comfortable and am really enjoying them now. The thing that sucks about these Sonos Ace headphones is that you have to have a Sonos soundbar to take advantage of the cinema features. It is similar to having to buy an Apple tv 4k to take advantage of the airpods/beats but the Sonos path is more expensive.
Is it possible to connect multiple Sonos Ace headphones via theater swap (wifi access)?
Given how much of an open secret this has been, I've been planning on getting these for my upcoming 50th birthday present to myself 🙂 Not sure if from a music/noise cancelling perspective it'll be a massive upgrade over my current daily drivers (Technics EAH-800's) - but the link to the Arc will be the must have feature for me. Looking forward to your final review!

Ive pre ordered the white set expecting these to be slightly better than models like Sony XM5 in sound but with more of a premium look and feel. Will be interesting Peter to see your own review as you already own several nice headphones.
Seriously interested in buying this one, because I can then finally enjoy cinema in the evening while kids are asleep. But …they only work wireless or is it also possible to disable Bluetooth and use a physical 3,5mm jack kabel to USB C?
The Beats Studio Pro and the new Beats Solo 4 allows C to C connection to device to play lossless audio.
Hi Peter, can you please do a review for arc + sub mini + era 100? Haven’t saw a video of you showing the era 100 as surround which you mentioned you will do previously as well.
I’ve been waiting for this for years! My 30% My upgrade discount code worked for my pre-order today making it WELL worth it’s vallue! Going to be great to pair it with my arc when the kids are sleeping, never been able to watch a proper movie for the last 4 years because of this

I know that feeling, mate.... I just want to watch a movie LOUD like I'm at the movies. But the only time to watch a movie is when the house is asleep... I have about $400 in gift vouchers for a hifi store, so yep, I'll get great value for $$.
I have an entire Sonos house with three full setups in various rooms; so, the idea of the sound swap when my wife goes to bed is fantastic, but really only if I’m watching a 4k UHD disc. All our setups have an Apple TV, and I do have a pair of the Airpod Max. I’m curious if the swap feature, or the sound quality itself, will justify the purchase… That said, I already pre-ordered them! I hope I don’t have to use that return period!
I’m curious about using these with hearing aids. There IS a market for grouping headphones with theater and other speakers because even the best Bluetooth hearing aids don’t personalize speech sounds / side to side balance / nor transition well between phone / bluetooth devices. I would love to listen to headphones WITH my hearing aids already correcting, vs putting in AirPods and having to switch listening profiles each time. No one else in my family needs the extra listening help, the soundbar and speakers are fine. But the grouping or the option to use the headphones at the same time would be so helpful to me. Any ideas on using these with hearing aids in general? Sizing etc?
Can you swap music from the speakers to headphone. For example I listen to my Fives and the it gets late I can just put the headphones on and continue where I left off?
@PeterPee

Hi Peter when is your Sonos ace review coming out?
If I had to buy a pair now I'd get these. But, it's really hard to justify switching from my Sony WH-1000XM5... I have a "all Sonos home", including a Sonos Arc, the idea of simply transferring the Atmos audio from the Arc to the headphones is great, but I can already set my PC to play Atmos for headphones (yes in Bluetooth VS Wifi so audio is probably more compressed). Am I missing something? Thanks and cheers!

to all those who expected streaming over wifi it would be impossible to have this without compromising severely the battery life of the headset. This would also impact the lifespan of the battery since you would have charge much more often for few minutes of listening.

Not sure. Have to try it out. But if it is Atmos, it will play in spatial audio. Not sure about the bandwidth. Though I suspect there's more than sufficient bandwidth for hi-res stereo if it can handle multi-channel audio. But there might be a chance that the Arc compresses it to stereo before sending it over.
One question - maybe I missed it. Can you pair multiple Ace headsets at once? (E.g., two people watching same movie in house at night)
Only reviewer who knows what he is talking about. People are expecting way too much on these headphones. Some of the stuff they want is as same as saying why we don’t have commercial flying cars yet 😅
Do these new headphones have pass through like Apple Max?
Tell them to fix their goddamn app. You have pull.
Nice headphones, but unfortunately a missed opportunity. Why does the Ace have to communicate with my ARC and is not independent So you have to make a choice: sound through TV or headphones. The added value is precisely when your partner can watch TV with sound through ARC and at the same time you can listen Music at the Sonos platform through the headphones.
I’ve own several versions of Bose quiet comfort. The fake leather flakes off after a year even when not in use. Hence, the leather parts must be easily and cheaply replaceable. In the ace, the head rest leather don’t seem replaceable and that is a concern.
Yeah baby....they're out albeit on pre-order. Waiting for the full in-depth review before I can justify spending thay much on these. That Dolby Atmos alone is enticing if I may say so myself.

You have very specific numbers. :D
WiFi connections are hard on battery life. I think this contributes to why this was skipped. However, the P2P WiFi with the Arc is a good feature
I want to start with my particular case, as an android user. Android features are the 2nd on Sonos priority list. They did that with True play, and still no extended true play on android. Second, I was a little bit disappointed with the "no Wifi playback", I understand the battery problem on wifi, but you need to pay $450.00 + sound bar to be able to play HD music on your Sonos Ace (at least I would like to have the wifi feature and let me decide to use it or not.). And this is my 3rd problem, and this is not a sonos problem, Samsung doesn't support APTX-HD on their android phones, just LDAC and single APTX, so I cannot use the ACE to listen "HD" music via just my android phone. I see the Sonos ACE as I see the Sony playstation portal, You need a ps5 to be able to use it correctly, (in this case the soud bar) or else you can do with the ACE what you do with any other headset. I hope that they at least allow any other sonos product to do the Wifi p2p option (eras 300 eras 100).
@PeterPee
Ай бұрын
The APTX version is adaptive. So it prioritises latency (to minimise it) and in some cases where there is a good strong connection, it could get close to APTX-HD.
TV audio swap only works with iOS. Also, not having any kind of room grouping (even if limited to no Atmos) and being entirely limited to soundbars, is a big bummer for those of us who are Amp users. If it sounds better than the AirPods Max, I’ll buy it, but they haven’t really implemented many Sonos killer features so it’s going to have to beat Apple on sound.
@PeterPee
Ай бұрын
I don't think it's limited to iOS. In fact, you don't even need the app to swap it. But I will test it and confirm.
Hope that usb c cable can be connected to iPhone to playback hi res lossless apple music
I was really hoping this would use wi-fi to send a wireless Hi-res sound quality experience to the headphones. Yes, so I can have no wires while I sit ir move around. Also so my phone's bluetooth does not send annoying notification sounds. ... yes genius I can silent all notifications while i use these and then turn notifications back on after doing that. However i would rather skip that step each time. Kinda the way we all use Sonos speakers in the house versus a bluetooth speaker.

As an Apple user and in the eco system I use the AirPod Max with my Apple TV but it sounds like these Sonos headphones are a waste of time as you need an arc to get the true cinema experience from them. I don’t like using the AirPod Max for travel as they’re too heavy on the head and was hoping to purchase the new Sonos Ace ones but don’t see the point now or am I missing something? May have to just purchase the Bose QC ultras instead. These headphones are obviously great if you’re in the Sonos ecosystem.

@@PeterPee interesting - ty - keen to see how this 'play' out, be watching...
Peter, I find that this was a missed opportunity for Sonos to lean into more personal home theater scenarios given the trend towards watching movies on mobile and laptop devices, and even the Apple Vision Pro (AVP). While I understand that the AVP is not yet released in Singapore yet, as a fellow Singaporean living in the US, I currently own one and it is a game changer to how future media consumption looks like. Handicapping the spatial audio features of the Ace to the Arc and future sound bars therefore seems shortsighted. In fact, I recently sold my Arc, Sub, and surrounds after getting the AVP since there wasn't a need for it anymore (movies, especially 3D ones, are far more immersive with the AVP), and the AVP is much more portable especially if you're mostly on the move, or are renting and may not have the space or may need to relocate in the future.
