    Great review as always! I got my hands on one. I love it. Velocity would be great. But for me it's not a deal breaker. To have access to nice, clean, easy to use FM for $150 bucks is amazing. A-Mazing! It should be said, that the trade off for no key velocity is the cool sequencer where you can sequence all the velocity changes you could ever want. I think this is the best Volca yet.

    I've owned all the Volcas but for a long time now, the Keys was the only one I've kept (and I use that one a lot). Just got this FM and I'm really loving it. It gives me a lot of the same sequencer functions (1/1, 1/2, 1/4 time, etc.) that I love about the Keys plus more. Also it brings me into a realm of sound that I don't have in any other device. I've always been a bit on the fence about FM but this little Volca gets my foot in that door for a very reasonable price.

    Great review. I've been looking for someone on KZread to actually make good sounds with this machine, glad you delivered as always, Nick. The velocity is disappointing, but I'm ready to live with that, I guess. The potential for having bells and percussive sounds in my live rig for such a cheap price and convenient form-factor is just too good. I suppose I can automate dynamics with MIDI CC.

    Nice to see Nick still doing great work (we knew each other many years ago when I was at Yamaha R&D) The 1.09 O.S addresses almost every issue he mentions in this video, and getting two Volca FM's for under £70 each, gives you pretty much a full DX7 for way less then they go for anywhere

    Good review, Nick, puts some things into perspective for me. I'm still using an MSX-based Yamaha CX5MII/128 computer with the DX7 voicing cartridge for patch creation on the DX7, it's old but works like a charm for more than two decades now. I had planned to use this setup for sound editing on the Volca FM as well and take advantage of its excellent live-tweaking and parameter locking functions compared to the real thing but it seems that it's simply not possible (yet). For a complete FM nut like me, purchase of this machine would be a no-brainer if it could be edited externally but even though I love its other functions and of course the good ol' FM sound (and its less noisy output compared the the real DX7), I probably won't be buying one as long as this problem has not been remedied. I'm quite sure Korg will come up with a solution to this, either via update or perhaps with a compatible editor. I'd prefer the update route, though, as there are tons of very good DX7 editors already available that could be used straight away.

People say you can only make 80s sounds/metallic sounds/ugly sounds and yes you can make those but there is SO MUCH MORE TO FM than that. Good video, and love that you seem to bring adequate light to its shortcomings. When you talk about the DX7 @ 1:16 it sounds like you're saying 1918-1984 ;-) I'm still waiting for mine to arrive, curious if it'll grab me when the other Volcas failed to. But overall I'm not convinced it'll grab the current Volca crowd. You're tied to a computer for loading patches. While they seem to get excellent mileage and variety from the frontpanel, it's still very fiddly to program just right. 32 memory locations are too stingy, particularly in a hard to program synth (something the Reface DX deserves stick for as well, but atleast it has back up). A guy here on youtube that has 1, says that recording the sync out dump, doesn't work for backing up your patches, meaning you have just about 0 options on that account (curious if he's right?). Put all those things together, I think very few people will ever bother to really program it, but instead just endlessly load 30 year old patches, effectively keeping it tied to a computer - the exact opposite of the purpose and appeal of the Volca range. And never really exploring the possibilities of FM synthesis with modern eyes. So I actually think Yamaha was more clever in their FM revival. They made it much easier to approach, and by excluding the old patches, they force people to explore and reimagine FM. Also 3 note poly seems like an odd choice for FM, particularly when you get 3 note analogue poly from the Volca keys at the same price. I'm still excited about when mine will arrive. But it really needs a patch/update for some of these things to embrace its full potential. At the end of the day, that's 1 of my big issues with Korgs "toy"-range, the ideas are halfbaked, and so much potential is wasted. But the Minilogue finally showed the world, they do actually have it in them, so hoping for better things. *_And for the love of God, get rid of that useless built in speaker!_*

    Hi! i recently bought the volca FM and i have a question: some knobs, for example the decay in the modulator and the carrier has a gap in values when i start moving the knob, if im standing at the point value of 19 it goes to 21 if i move the knob without passing through the 20, and this behaviour repeats in other values. Is this a normal behaviour in the volca FM or i have to return it? thanks a lot!

    it's not only an issues for keyboard players (who might not go for the volca with 3 voices anyway); it limits the useability for external sequencers, velocity sensitivity linked to note on/off is important to program accents in house & techno sequences, too. Otherwise, what's the point of the access to all the original DX7-sounds, which also live through their velocity sensitivity

The time spent setting them up would be too distracting from whatever I'd planned to do with them. It can't be too challenging to put several of these voice cards into a larger box and add some knobs and switches to tweak the parameters with live.

    From what I understand, you can use Dexed for that purpose. You load the DX7 SysEx patches into Dexed and then you send them from Dexed into the Volca FM over MIDI. Mind you, I haven't actually tried this (I don't have a Volca FM - yet), but that's my understanding on how it's done.

    For anyone still wondering why Sysex files don't sound exactly the same on the Volca as on the DX7; I found the problem! The thing is that the Volca FM has the additional modulator/carrier attack and decay knobs on the front panel in order to adjust the entire envelopes. Play with these knobs starting with the mod decay on max and bring it down until the patch on the Volca sounds just like your Sysex DX7 patch :)

    Great review of a great little product! does sonic state have a prediction on what the next Volca might be? I think the big money would be in a Volca beats 2 based clearly on the 909, where as opposed the first one that was loosely based on the 808, this one could copy the 909 color shceme so there was no mistake as to what they were trying to do.

    When the DX7 was introduced its biggest feature was changing the sound through velocity, something Samplers couldn't do at the time. This is the reason why people were excited for a Volca with FM, with Velocity omitted there's no reason to buy one.

  • @TheRealTakumaji

    +Bob Borries Yes, it's a big thing for performers but for electronic musicians and bedroom producers who are no trained keyboard players, playing in a sequence and afterwards recording velocity changes with the slider actually comes in quite handy. I use this method for various things and it's very helpful for someone like me with low performance skills. :)

    Korg has a new easter egg game on with their (mostly killer) new products: Spot the Glaring Omission! Volca FM's is of course the velocity thing; the Minilogue's is missing latch for the arp....

    @MarctheDarc

    +asynchronicity Oh that's not a new game. That's been going on since they re-entered the analogue game. For most of them, it centers around the lack of proper MIDI and/or USB-MIDI implementation. The lack of a proper output. And the inclusion of an utterly useless built in speaker, that serves absolutely no purpose other than making the output more noisy.

  • @WillisZzz

    @WillisZzz

    The speaker adds noise to the output? My Keys outputs odd noises from time to time... I'd remove the speaker if I knew it would make for a cleaner output.

  • @MarctheDarc

    @MarctheDarc

    ***** In a sense. It's not done simply by removing the speaker. The problem extends deeper than as such, so I would recommend not attempting any modifications unless you're quite proficient in electronics. The main problem is that any amp-stage adds noise, especially cheap ones. So while it's probably a shared amp between the speaker and the headphone output, it's an amp that shouldn't be there in a line level output, and it's switching circuitry that shouldn't be there either. And plenty more that's not springing to mind in this sec. All unnecessary sources of additional noise, that shouldn't be present in a line level output, but so hardwired into the output stage, that it'll be close to impossible for some1 without the proper knowledge of electronics to remove and replace. But unless it's defective in some way, it should be a fairly steady background noise, rather than bursts of noise. So those odd noises is probably something else, well worth investigating - do you still have warranty?

  • @WillisZzz

    @WillisZzz

    8 жыл бұрын

    +Marc the Darc it's a high-pitched squeal that happens during certain areas of the filter on certain notes. From what you're saying, it probably has nothing to do with the output amp, which just generally has quite a bit of inherent noise.

  • @MarctheDarc

    @MarctheDarc

    8 жыл бұрын

    With high resonance that filter will generally squeal, and isn't necessarily consistent, as it being analogue (and cheaply made) does impart a fair degree of "chaos". However, if it's surrounding specific frequencies no matter the sound, you may wanna consider if it's exaggerated frequencies from anything from your speakers/headphone to listening enviroment. Especially cheap speakers, paired with untreated and cluttered listening enviroments may cause certain frequencies to "overload". And cheap headphones are no better, although the amount of possible factors decrease. Then there's the risk of faulty wires and plenty more. You would do well to test it thoroughly with different equipment, and/or in a different enviroment to be certain. This is still highly theoretical, as there's so many variables. But careful and thoughtful testing could narrow down the issue by much.

    Why is The FM limited to 3 note polyphony? Was the DX7 only 3x polyphony? Given how one of the signature FM sounds is electric piano, it's frustrating you can't play fat chords. The KV FM is fully digital so what's the practical constraints on polyphony?

    +Shimanski Beats It sounds like a really basic and obvious omission and that's what worries me. Is there something inherent in its architecture that prevents it somehow? Musical Challenge: I know people are commenting on the lovely outro. But I prefer it at 8:00. I really can’t get it out of my head. I know some very talented reviewers can knock out a random pleasing bassline, so this is probably not released as a track. Gosh, I wish it was. If it’s never been released that’s ok, because it’s musical DNA sounds so familiar in the best way. In my head It’s created by combing Tears for Fears with the Stranger Things duo (Dixon & Stein) and used in a final scene for Risky Business or The Breakfast Club. So the Musical Challenge is; If this track doesn’t exist other than a lovely review filler, can anyone think of anything very very similar. I don’t mean just in the same vein exactly, but is this triggering heavy nostalgia for anyone else, but they are able to pinpoint something almost exactly the same or of the same essence that it then becomes exactly the same subconsciously. You know what I mean. Lol. Alternatively, please Mr Nick Batt release this in that raw electro 80’s soundtrack form at 8:00 and not so much The also lovely more modern outro. I can’t just keep playing this video over & over. Or I can. But please help. 🙏🙂⛰

    All the Volcas have a 16 step sequencer, but on the Sample and FM, it's possible to link multiple sequences together to get longer patterns. So on the FM for example, you can link all 16 sequences together to produce one, long, 256 note sequence.

    Yeah, the volca is closer to a real DX7. It seems Yamaha were more interested in creating a new FM synth rather than cloning a previous one. Annoyingly, they both have their pros and cons-the volca has the DX7 patch access, and sequencer/arpeggiator, but is only 3 note poly, and the reface has 8 note poly and a great keybed (plus effects!), but is twice the price, and isn't compatible with DX7 patches (having said that, there is an online patch repository of some sort!).

    kish bhar One other reason: Unless Yamaha hasn’t renewed its patents on their version of FM, DeXed isn’t entirely legal; it’s just not worth their while to go after it. On the other hand, Volca FM is quite legal, seeing as Yamaha has partial ownership of Korg. Also, DeXed is close to the sound of a six-op DX7, it’s not exact. Personally, if I have a choice between a software version and it’s hardware equivalent, hardware will win every time.
