A playthrough of Sega's 1995 educational "storyware" game for the Sega Pico, Sonic the Hedgehog's Gameworld.
The ending and the credit roll are shown.
The Sega Pico is among Sega's least known consoles released in the west, and likewise, Sonic the Hedgehog's Gameworld is one of the least known Sonic games ever released in the US. It's certainly not the traditional Sonic we've known and loved for years, but it certainly makes a good effort at drawing kids in to the system and the stuff that it offers. This one is less educational than many of the titles released for the Pico, but it's still a really cool novelty piece.
Despite its utter failure in the west, the Sega Pico was a giant success for the company in Asia for how well it wed the gaming with learning for kids. The Pico itself was basically a stripped-down Genesis deck: it had no controller ports (there was a d-pad of sorts and a single action button on the console itself) but it had a wired stylus attached to frame. It also lacked the YM2612 chip from the Genesis, so if you think the game sounds more like a Master System with super-distorted digital sound than a Genesis, that's the reason.
The system was a cool setup for sure. It opened up clamshell-style (similar to a laptop), to reveal a big touchpad. The cartridges, or "storyware" plugged into the cart slot on top of the deck, and it had a full color book attached to it. Changing pages in the book would switch scenes in the game, and you could use the stylus on the pages themselves to interact with different elements. These pages are what are shown at the top-right of the video - the page shown matches up with the scene being played.

If they removed the The Hedgehog part, this would make a lot more sense! 9:17 That's obvious tho...
This little-known title definitely isn't a "traditional" Sonic title, but it definitely served as a cool showpiece for the things that the Sega Pico could do.

What I actually kind of like is all the additional classic Sonic sprites and animation. I am perhaps too much of a nostalgia person but I always really preferred the original Japanese designs of Sonic, Tails, Amy, Eggman/Robotnik. (and Metal Sonic, Ray, Mighty, Knuckles, Fang the Sniper, even later newcomers like Bean, Bark, Metal Knuckles, and Sonic Mania's Hardboiled Heavies) Makes me mourn I can not draw as I would love to make some art with them. Perhaps a little silly, especially on my age.
Good on you for including the actual book illustrations- most gameplay vids don't include them.

I TOTALLY REMEMBER THIS FROM WHEN I WAS IN F***ING PRE-SCHOOL!! 10:00 This was the game that taught me that the trick to those "guess which shell is hiding the object underneath it" is that you should keep your eye on the shell with the object underneath it when they mix it up!

Sonic Dreams Collection? You mean the nonexistent Collection Game for Sonic's games on Dreamcast/GameCube that needs to come out for Current Consoles? I don't know of any other Sonic Dreams Collection.

Some minigames actually look good... *Y A Y* No, seriously, i feel like with some adjustment they could be used for some Sonic Shuffle sequel, heck, maybe even for some Chao Garden minigames. (If they want to do other one.)

Fun fact: I like Sega. I also like corn dogs. However, Sega Corndogs NintendoComplete would probably be overkill as a channel name. Another fact: I am also a fan of the bass clarinet, but I didn't call my channel that either.

The beginning of the music on the minigames sounds the exact same as a BGM intro in Mario & the 6 Golden Coins

@@deadacclol5061 Got it now. But what definitely weird is that the music is lower pitched and has samples in the japanese version. This is also one of the rare cases where Sonic wasn't redesigned for the West. Knowing Sega Pico is an edutainment console, the decision to keep the art from the japanese version was for the best in this. The only thing that was changed here was the casino to fortress. Why did they change Sonic's design for the cartoon and the Mega Drive games in the United States? Some things just don't make sense.

I feel like it's an interesting bit of Sega lore that in 1996, most Sega fans were focused on the Saturn, arcade releases, or maybe the waning days of the Genesis, Sega CD, and Game Gear, meanwhile Thomas Kalinske is looking at the Pico going, "you know, there's something here"

My brother got a Pico for Christmas in 1994 he was 5 yrs old and he had the Richard Scarry game. After only playing with it for only a couple of hours he never used it again it was just to boring.
I have never played on a real Sega Pico before.
If the Pico was Genesis hardware, why does this only use the PSG chip for music?
