Love Sonic 2, but Sonic 3 & Knuckles is my favorite

I know. Sonic 3&K tends to get knocked down a peg. I guess it's gotten more love in recent years, but I still hear people who think that the series actually went downhill with Sonic 3. I've always thought Sonic 3&K was the most balanced game of the Genesis era. I love Sonic 3&K. Sonic 2 is good, but my patience wanes starting in Oil Ocean, and I stop liking it after Metropolis Zone.

Neil, I agree. I think 3&K, even separate, are a better game or games than 2. 2 has some levels that really just aren't that much fun, like Oil Ocean. It does get better at the end of the game, but imo, it's not he best Sonic game. I think people just tend to hop on bandwagons, and somehow 2 got put up on a pedestal over time.

Soni Cd is also a good one. SOnic 2 is great and all but i think some of the levels can be unforgiving. and Silver Sonic still gives me trouble

The half-invisible plants you guys have mentioned are a side effect of a method often used in games from that era to achieve the illusion of transparency called dithering. It's often blurred out when using composite cables, to a point where it looks rather convincing, but RGB has no such mercy and the secret is revealed. It's a hardware limitation from back then.

MrGamer1992 Well, I can't tell you what SEGA's reasoning for it was, but obviously not all bushes are equally thick. My guess is that their argument would be that and the fact that they wanted the bushes to be foreground elements that didn't completely obstruct your view.

James, READ THIS MESSAGE, if your going to play sonic 3, remember that the spinning cylinders in carnival night zone can be moved up and down by pushing the d pad up and down in conjunction with the cylinders movement, NOT jumping on it. This tip WILL see you thru that zone!

Took me a long time as a kid to figure that out. I had several timeouts in Carnival Night Zone until I figured out how the cylinders worked.

I still prefer a few 3D Sonic games over them including Adventure 2, Colors, and Generations, but Sonic 3 & Knuckles is my favorite 2D Sonic game.

OMG, a Sonic 3 and Knuckles playthrough would be amazing. It has much more variety than Sonic 2.

It’s always so meta to think that James and Mike are each other’s fans, I love seeing them defend or compliment one another

something was fucked up with the audio in this episode. You could hear the game music playing twice.

The microphones they were using also picked up the audio coming out of the tv. While the audio was recorded through their capture device.

Sonic 2 is a good game, but Sonic 3 and Knuckles has always been my favorite in the series. I'd be overjoyed to see you guys play that :D

they went off on a whole three stooges convo which is up as a deleted scene. I think they try to make sure these videos actually stay on topic but imo id rather them just release the whole recording xD

"A plumbing we will go" is one of my favorite ones. In "It's a mad mad mad world", they show up at the end as firemen. Gives me chills everytime it pans up from their boots

The in-game audio and the camera audio (of the game's sounds) aren't in perfect sync. It's not an easy task to check every part of the video project and match both audio files. Sometimes, it just doesn't work.

INKstreme Actually you can just face the controller towards the camera so it can see you press start button or similar. It becomes a visual sync which helps a lot.

Thanks for the video guys. Sonic 2, 3, and Knuckles are my favs of all time. As for chaos emeralds, collecting all 7 allows you to transform into Super Sonic, which is pretty fun. If ya'll do sonic 3, I recommend doing it with the Sonic and Knuckles lock-on so you can experience both halves of the game in its entirety. That game also has bonus stages, and if you collect all the emeralds there, you can get the final hidden boss and real ending. Cheers

I'll add to this and say if you do Sonic 3, get the hack called Sonic 3 Complete. It's widely considered the best Sonic 3 experience.

Thank goodness you avoided the "Pit" in Mystic Cave Act 2. As a Kid I'd always fall in there. Say Mike, did you ever fall in that pit? More so as Super Sonic? Ultimate time waster. I once Time Overed in that pit.

In the official mobile release that pit leads to one of the two never before released Sonic 2 levels. Yep. People would debug or hack or whatever and see these 2 unfinished glitchy levels on the cartridge and they finally finished them. Too bad it's only for mobile. The levels are good too!

I played all sonics(on sega), i collected all emeralds, you know, there's extra stages as a super sonic flying through space as a super sonic. Yes, double jump will transform to super sonic(in sonic 3) if you have 50+ rings and simple jump in sonic 2. Sonic 1 just doesn't have super sonic.

+Cinemassacre All the chaos Emeralds in Sonic 2 get you Super Sonic and a different ending. Remember to plug Sonic 3 in to Sonic and Knuckles for an extended version of the game. Getting all 14 Chaos Emeralds in Sonic 3 & Knuckles gives you Hyper Sonic and a new final boss.

It's great to see you guys play this. I love this game, and I know every last in and out to it. Gathering all 7 emeralds not only gives you access to Super Sonic and a slightly altered ending, but by extension (and with some help from some really awesome glitchery), they also give you access to "Super Tails" and two even-faster and even-higher-jumping versions of Super Sonic (dubbed "Mega Sonic" and "Hyper Sonic").

Seeing James' face when he beat Sonic 2 was the greatest thing.

Pepper Spray I didn't because of the whole "take your rings" thing. And since I wanted continues, I always tried to have at least 100 rings at the end.

I like how when you died with the Mystic Cave boss and couldn't jump to reach the rings, Mike just sat there rather than flying up to get them.

I'm gonna be _that_ guy and point out that that's not Mecha Sonic, it's Silver Sonic.

The chaos emeralds let you turn into super sonic. If you reset the game, go to the options menu and press start the game will start at the beginning of the game with any emeralds you had before

Metropolis Zone would be much easier if you could play as Superman.

Wow I have never seen the last boss beat that way before!!! I hit him when he bends down after targeting you. Well played.

Fun to watch them as total beginners to the game, but there's still more enjoyment to be had. Stage select and playing Special Stages only, Super Sonic in the whole game, debug mode to fly around and glitch it up!!

Everyone still goes ga-ga over this game, but I thought Sonic 3, and Sonic & Knuckles were way better(for the record, this is still a damn good retro game - just stating my strong preference)...and forget when you put them together lol, no other Sonic game comes close

Really, all the original ones hold up well. A couple of the 3D games are solid too. The crappy titles like Sonic 06 gave the series a bad rap. I have a feeling that Sonic Mania will be the best one of them all

Raimi's Oz is Army of Darkness for kids! The plots are exactly the same. Charming yet egotistical rogue gets transported to another world, is presumed to be the fulfillment of a prophesy and then uses his scientific knowledge (exclusive to his world) in order to defeat the seemingly all-powerful antagonist. I loved it for that reason alone.

James totally evading life's questions - mario or luigi, sonic or tails, moe or larry...

The ending sucked because that ISN'T the real (good) ending. Seriously, how can you not know about Chaos Emeralds and Super Sonic??

hi guys, and james, I'm like a game master of the retro days and I have to tell you, if you get 50 rings and hit the check mark, you can play the bonus stage, all the rings come back to the stage after doing so. if you get all the chaos emeralds the bonus stage disappears and once you collect 50 rings and jump, you can become super sayan sonic.

Great video mike and james I grew up with up with master system and mega drive and love sonic as a kid till now thank you

I believe the crab conundrum could've been solved as Tails was only off-screen a little which was not far enough to trigger a respawn

I had the Sonic Collection on Genesis and it was amazing. The I got a Dreamcast and Sonic Adventure became my favorite game for the longest time, and still is my favorite Sonic game.

Getting all 7 chaos emeralds gives you super sonic, there's also a trick that if you keep resetting the system without powering off you keep your emeralds which makes it easier and essentially gives you super sonic for the entire game

Here's a neat little trick for Sonic the Hedgehog 2...Get all the Chaos Emeralds and then collect 50 rings. Before jumping into the air to turn into Super Sonic, find a box containing the invincibility power up. Then, while you're still invincible, jump into the air. You will now have a sparkle Super Sonic, until you run out of rings that is!

Great digression there! The different lineups of stooges all had unique entourage effects.

James and Mike feeling sorry for Luigi for not being picked in the Mario64 team, like he's a real person with touchy feels.

Also the simple trick to beat metal Sonic is to space yourself right next to where he will be positioned on either side and hold a spin dash but not release it, it basically cuts him like a saw landing 3-4 hits per cycle making it ridiculously easy once you figure it out.
