Generations feels so alive, and lush while Forces feels kind of dead. I think it’s the music idk. The graphics look better in Forces but the presentation in generations is far better.

Graphically, Forces is a big improvement over Generations BUT don't misunderstand me... Generations overall has the better PRESENTATION, making it a nicer looking game than Sonic Forces altogether. This basically means that Sonic Forces has much better lighting, texture quality and shadows, but Sonic Generations actually knows how to put together an environment and time things in a way that makes it satisfying for both gameplay and visuals.

TheFrostedfirefly I agree. But in Forces, the Blocky level design ruins it for me personally. It's not as bad as Colors mind you, but it is really distracting and it makes it feel sort of bland. I prefer the Generations level. It's a longer level, thus more variety, gameplay and more replay value. I still think Unleashed is graphically the best looking Sonic game and it's 10 years old at this point. Sure, Unleashed and Gens both use the Hedgehog Engine, but they toned down the engine for Gens. And that's why the game looks so pixelated. Or at least the console versions. (The engine was designed for Unleashed after all.) Edit: And the reason why it was toned down in Gens is because they wanted a smoother framerate.

I think that's why forces is worse to me, top speed is so slow, so watching them run is not satisfying

I miss when Classic Sonic had better physics. I miss Modern Sonic's drift. I miss when combos in mid-air existed. I miss when the gameplay was actually challenging. I miss the different camera angles in classic stages. I miss the fact that there wasn't talking every 5 seconds during gameplay. I miss when the classic stage music was good. I MISS WHEN SONIC STAGES HAD GOOD PRESENTATION!

just looking at the green hill comparison, Sonic Generations had you go a lot faster, and you still had an at least slightly longer level either way. Not only that but Forces seemed so boring, I wasn't interested watching it.. Geez, people aren't kidding when they say Generations is much better. The spindash didn’t need a nerf. With the natural momentum being as screwy and floaty the as it was in Generations the overcharged spindash was good to compensate for that

Carlos Tapuera Graphics go to forces but everything else, especially physics are for generations. Modern sonic doesn’t even have drift and there are some parts where drift should have been used just make you fly off the map

Also in Generations modern had much better jumpball with his body spinning and covered in nice effect whereas in Forces it's just a model swap to spiked sphere. Generation's modern had many homing attack animations but in Forces there is only one. That's quite a visual downgrade.

Forces had no motion blur it has these white line effect that lost world has during a spin dash

If Sonic Team made a full-on no-side-gimmick Modern Sonic game with Generations' full moveset, physics, level design, with a darker themed story (Forces, but with much more detailed and varied environments, but kept Sonic's cocky attitude from Colours/ Generations in the midst of all that's going on), then I think we'd have a very-damn-near (if not) perfect Modern Sonic game that could earn the people/ fan's trust in the quality of the series again. Generations marked a great upward trajectory for Sonic. It can happen again.

I'm seeing two great games here each for their own reasons.

@FarrowTheEdgehog15 _ because the coins in super mario odyssey are here to buy clothes to get get more power moons, merchindice's for your odyssey or dress up mario in goofy style's ( seriously the boxer shorts make laugh hard), but the rings in sonic forces don't serve nothing and then shower you with 999 rings that do nothing like no shop to buy weapons or clothes to buy, no new characters ( shadow doesn't count) , no super sonic, and so whats the point of getting all red rings, bingo number cards, and the silver moon medals if your not going to get nothing expect achievements that are pointless like come on my dude cuz that is lazy.

I like it a lot. Classic Sonic dogshit in Forces but the music is great, especially the Green Hill Classic Sonic boss music.

Remember when momentum was a thing with classic Sonic? In Sonic Forces there is no momentum with Classic Sonic at all. Now matter how fast you run you can never get over simple ramps in Sonic Forces.

Disagree, Generations didn't have good momentum physics for Classic Sonic like in the Genesis games he felt stiff and heavy and they needed to put boost pads and automation everywhere in order to make Classic Sonic go the right speed with more complex terrain like loops, ramps, curves ect. Compare Classic Sonic in Generations to Mania Sonic they feel way different. It's not that surprising then to me that the team from Generations that went on to work on Forces didn't get the physics for Classic Sonic right in Forces either. They just copy and pasted Generations Classic Sonic and added a speed cap, gimped his jump and added the drop dash.

I think Sunset heights looks gorgeous (In a... Sunset heights sorta way) Come on man the presentation. The death egg robots destroying the city. The.. Fire asteroids?? Its just so well done man.

Forces only has one uniquely good looking visual design and that was the Metropolis. Everything else felt a bit derivative and not so improved. I think with Green Hill though it’s unfair because the plot turns it sandy also obviously Green Hill had to look deliberately run down!

God the homing attack powerup for classic sonic was so satisfying. Wish sega thought up something other than clothes ._. Also, really curious as to what eggman thought ANOTHER giant casino would actually accomplish. My most favorite of sonic forces is this kind of song 0:22

Basically in Forces we can see a lot of improvement in graphics, textures...they look great! (Genernation's are not bad either but you can see the improvement) But for me personally, the way the levels are designed are much better in Generations. They are longer and look stunning( I don't see a level in Forces as pretty as Sky Sanctuary, honestly). and the way you control the characters is more 'fluid'. I mean classic sonic is at least faster in Generations and you were able to drift with modern sonic. Music wise, I prefer Generation's soundtrack, I've listened to some music from Forces and they are not bad but not great either. Also I've realised that there are more songs with vocals on Forces which is not a bad thing but I don't think that those types of songs fits with those levels they are in.

If you check more precisely, the vocal songs are only during the avatar stages, even in his phase during final boss, rock and modern synthethic music is for Modern Sonic and ear-r4ping synth is for classic Sonic ! I honestly think this is a pretty cool detail :)

It’s like comparing a chocolate cake with sprinkles and a piece of crap with chunks of corn in it

Just a small nitpick I have: You can't compare two different levels if they don't have much in common. Mystic Jungle and Sky Sanctuary don't have a lot that are similar. I mean, kinda , but not a lot.

Both of them are awesome.

If we're talking about green hill zone generations is better, with modern the level was longer with multiple paths and secrets while sonic forces is literally a straight line boost to win, now classic in generations he didnt have the best physics but they were better than forces and the level seemed alive and colourful but forces on the other hand the level is bland with basic repetitive platforming and the psychics got messed up they even locked his speed . Basicly repeat all those points to the other levels generation is the better game even tho it was made 7 years ago .

Jordan Dude Surprisingly it’s not, The developers just knew how to use Hedgehog engine properly. In fact they used it so well in Sonic Unleashed, they had to dumb it down in Generations just to make sure framerates wouldn’t drop 😂. Forces could’ve looked like generations with better lighting/textures etc. but these new developers did not know how to use the Hedgehog Engine 2 to its fullest

Ah man, these two are good modern Sonic games (Generations is far superior I believe with it's smoother gameplay) but the one game in between them (Lost World) felt so odd. I wish they'd re-release it on the modern consoles like the X1, PS4 and Switch. At least the Switch if they have a Nintendo deal. What do you guys think of Lost World compared to Generations and Forces?

Best part of Generations is that Modern Sonic can actually reach top speed in 2D sections without boosting or dash panels.

You wanna know something generations did that should have stuck with EVERY SONIC GAME (even mania): The skill shop. It's so fun to customize sonic to make I different from other Sonics.

I wish they’d create a game with boost sonic, but lets you play as Sonic’s friends with their adventure style gameplay, so Knuckles’ treasure hunting and Tails’ race to the finish style of gameplay.

I can't remember if Green hill was turned into a desert because of Lost World, or if Eggman did something to it between Lost World and Forces

to those saying graphics are better than generations, I'm not gonna attempt to change your mind, I just wanna suggest replaying lost valley. take a good look at every detail, the colors used, and the world presentation. if you still think its an improvement, great fine by me. but give it a shot anyways, you might come back with a different view

Is it just me or does anyone else like the new sound track for green hill zone

While I do appreciate the lighting in Forces, it's definitely an obvious rush job. Throughout the 4-year development period, at least three full years were spent on making the engine. In fact, when the teaser dropped, not even a pre-alpha was made yet. There was nothing. Forces should have been given an extra four years of development. Though, I have a hypothesis. Maybe a much larger title is in the works, and Forces was just filler to test the new engine and potentially satisfy fans.

Does that explain why they went for a more cartoonish style in Forces than the Pixar style realism from Unleashed/Generations? So they could make the less detailed graphics faster and port it over more easily to all consoles.

I enjoy both Forces and Generations but i enjoy Generations a bit more

Problem with this comparison is that you're comparing stages that appear in order in Generations to stages that appear much later into Forces. For example: If a viewer was to take this at face value, without prior knowledge of how Generations and Forces are laid out, they'd be under the assumption that Green Hill Zone is the first level in both for Classic Sonic and be lead to believe that Sonic Forces has a longer Green Hill stage for Classic Sonic, but a shorter Green Hill for Modern Sonic, while Generations has a shorter Green Hill for Classic Sonic, but a longer Green Hill for Modern Sonic. But, this comparison video is good at demonstrating how more alive and joyful Generations is compared to Forces, along with how they use 3D to enhance Classic Sonic level design by making good use of camera angles, foregrounds, and backgrounds, to add some 3D pop to an otherwise 2D experience.

Generations is way better, but some of the classic sonic sections definitely have automated sections with boost pads a lot. SEGA in forces though is like "We can't make good levels? Let's just add a boost pad"

for green hill the only thing that i think forces did better than generstions is the grass. The background in forces looks like a level that didnt fully load

I still have no idea how this video exists and people STILL think that Forces is the objectively better game. Generations wins by miles.

Team Sonic Heroes You must be one those casual players who thinks that Generations, Colors, and Unleashed were too hard. We're sorry that you can't handle difficult fast paced non-linear Sonic levels.
