When I get home from the water my wife asks two questions 1. how was fishing? Answer is always: wonderful, great sunrise, saw wildlife, etc. 2nd: how was catching? Answer: I report numbers Fishing isn’t about catching per se. many have lost the enjoyment of the experience for staring at a screen….. Many People in tournaments have lost etiquette and will sell their soul to win a check.

I agree with you Randy. I have been an avid bass angler for over 70 years. ( I’m 80) and have been a part of the bass fishing revolution since the beginning. However, bass fishing today is soulless. The kids today are just playing a video game and are missing the true meaning of the sport and why we do it. I have totally lost interest and now almost exclusively fish for catfish. I feel it brings me closer to nature and to a simpler time in my life.

This is my two cents worth. I’ve never fished with forward facing sonar. I fished club tournaments up until about three years ago. I spent decades chasing fish and gathering knowledge and experience just to compete at the club level. Skipping jigs, flipping vegetation, shaky head/ worm, crank bait and spinner bait. And within all those techniques is the knowledge and experience to know what color, how fast, how slow, how deep, what cover, what structure…on and on. That knowledge takes years to get efficient at all the above. But I believe if I had forward facing sonar with a spot lock trolling motor, I could catch fish in a short period of time. Nit decades! Because it’s a one technique way to fish! Once I find the fish, it’s just a matter of running through lures and see which one draws interest. Any interest is the baseline. If no takers, change colors. If more interest is shown by the fish but still no takers, change size. Do that until you get bit! No years of learning how to flip or skip a jig under a dock. It just dumbs down a great sport that anyone with a few hours and can cast a lure, can catch fish. And it’s the very reason I stopped watching tournaments online or on TV. I don’t want to watch an angler stare at a screen non stop!

If you are illegal you can take whatever you want using whatever methods you want and they look the other way. Gill nets and cast nets for game fish….sure no problem! As long as you aren’t a citizen. Amen...but, that's half the point. If you can't win without the use of this technology, then the LAST thing you are is a "pro". But, these insecure, babies are so deep into their entitlement, and co-dependence, that they have no idea how pathetic they look. *Imagine hearing about a PBA "pro" who rolled a 300game, and winning a tournament, then while hoisting his trophy said "Yes, I used gutter bumpers, but it was still difficult, because I still had to walk up to the lane and roll the ball 12x's!!!"* And, that's to say nothing of the effects on the fish themselves...

@@sanderludeman3007 ....that's exactly what bowlers who throw 300 games say when they're using bumpers. You still have to have the strength and stamina to roll a 16lb bowling ball, and make sure you hit the pocket. You guys should listen to yourselves. So, now your argument is that it takes more skill to learn how to install, and learn that crap, than it is to learn how to actually fish? If you're THAT co-dependent to where you need that kind of technology, then you don't deserve to have an opinion on the matter. Livescope is the affirmative action of fishing. It gives people who never learned how to fish in the first place the feeling of being a legitimate competitor. In 5-10yrs, when they allow entitled, co-dependent anglers to use cast-nets along with Livescope, you'll be arguing how difficult it is to throw a cast-net properly. You're so deep into your world of entitlement, and co-dependence, you have no clue as to what a slap in the face it is to the pro's who won tournaments without it. The entire point of the tournament is to show off the skills it takes to figure the fish out on a given body of water. Not, show our technical prowess with technology that was originally designed for the medical field to look inside women's uterus's to see if they're pregnant. *At, some point, you're going to have to not only to take responsibility for your co-dependent, and intelligence, but learn some self-respect. As of your reply, your showing none of it. Think about how pathetically lazy it sounds to drive around a lake with your face glue'd to a video game looking for fish, before you make a cast.....*

Been a muskie guy for decades, guiding, TV been around a while (have filmed w Mercer); anyway did a piece on channel recently on FFS and handling (mainly muskie focus); multiple comments on our piece mentioned your work here finally had time to watch. Well done! Beyond opinions which greatly differ, the fisheries being able to handle it - is the single biggest thing. Overall, with very few exceptions, one on one talk says it's tougher ... I have many friends/connections in Canada, and even on those massive waters - starting to get many whispers of worry. I can't completely put my finger on how much is population depletion (not just muskie obviously) and how much is learned avoidance, but these fisheries (where everyone's bread is buttered) need to be the focus. Appreciate you addressing it

Of those 22 tournaments the only ones to win were the guys with the FFS. The rest of us were fishing for 2nd place. I did get one check once for 3rd place. We either donate or we buy it. Well I broke down in December and bought it. I expect to learn how to use it this year but next year I plan to win. Because if you don’t have it you’re not going to win.

The only Data anyone needs to look at to see what FFS is doing is the tournament results since it's inception. It has and will continue to dominate 9/10 tournaments. From Florida to Canada from the East coast to California, it has dominated essentially every event. 20 yr olds with 6 screens are qualifying or the Elites with it and young anglers that have no foundation as anglers are beating 30 yr tour veterans at will with the technology. People like Milliken can deny these facts and claim that all these anglers, including himself, would be dominating without FFS but it is not true, period. If you normalize anything enough it will eventually become common place never to be undone. That is what is at stake here. I love tournament bass fishing more than anything in life, and it is truly sad to me what is happening to it in real time before our eyes.

My opinion is. Ffs should only be allowed to use in practice in the top pro tournament tours. The top level anglers should be a collection of anglers based on skill, experience, and determination. Not the amount of technology on their boats. And i honestly believe that for the Classic. It should be fished on the original format. 10lbs of tackle. All the boats rigged the same. With trolling motor and a choice of 1 other type of electronic device.

Just because you don’t believe in technology or can’t adapt, doesn’t mean we have to adapt back 20 years. Bass will adapt, every tournament angler has this on their boat. Only a few place on the top ten or only 1 wins.

I caught plenty of bass, perch, Pike in the occasional catfish. Now I have thousands of dollars in rods, reels, and tackle. I don't catch any more fish now than I did back then. The harder fishing becomes the more money we have to spend to catch the same amount of fish. Such a vicious cycle.

I believe when it comes to tournament fishing you need to look at the bottom half of the tournament standings. Traditionally strong lakes have half their field weighing in small limits or not catching a limit. There is not doubt it is getting tougher to catch a bass. I don’t know if FFS hurts the fisheries, but it sure doesn’t help them in any way!

My dad says he agrees with you 100% and appreciates you for taking up the cause and taking the heat for it. You give a voice to everybody who is irritated by it and doesn’t have a real platform to express that frustration. But maybe the fights should be taken to state governments instead of Bassmaster and other tournaments. It’s just like deer hunting. If they regulated it like they do bow or muzzleloader season that might work.

Normally I disagree with you, but you're 100% correct in rebutting the whole "well the tournament weights have been the same as 30 years ago." That should send alarm bells ringing. How is it that the weights are the same, yet the technology in rods, reels, lures, and electronics has increased by 1000 fold in 30 years. If anything, the weights should go up every few years with the increase in technology. If you took guys out on 18ft boats with only pistol grip rods, heavy line mono, and flashers I guarantee half the field of BASS would skunk. You cannot win a tournament outside of the spawn fishing up shallow. There are simply very few catchable keeper sized fish up in the shallows anymore.

Because fish adapt and evolve to their environments. After all they are still fish that only eat so much in a given day and live so long in a given body of water. Case in point…. we’ve all heard Randy talk about the fact that they won’t bite what they used to bite 30 years ago. They’re not stupid. They get harder to catch all the time. So yeah, they should weigh in the same today as they did 30 years ago unless we start feeding them protein and steroids.

I personally know a guide on Rayburn, that has told me that in order to sustain his business he had to go with FFS. His client keeper fish have gone up to average 1,230 fish per year. that's how many more fish his clients are keeping because they meet the states guidelines, and they are keepers. that's just 1 guide.

They had to redesign the whole front end of the boat so he could put all those graphs on there. I don’t no why even if you had the money why would you want all that crap on your boat I’ve seen videos of other guys they’re putting back up black boxes in case one goes out there putting an extra transducers in case one goes out because they have to have this to compete. Guides for trophy deer hunts on huge high fence ranches. A guide scouts , places feeders and blinds in prime areas, gets pictures sent to his cell phone, patterns a huge buck that comes in every morning to eat corn, client gets dropped off from a truck with heat on before he has to even get in it for the ride through the woods, climbs in blind an hour before daylight and plays with his phone till the buck shows up, makes a half ass shot on a deer 80 yards away , guid has to track a gut shot deer for 3 hours, client gets it shoulder mounted, drives to work in his F350 4x4 diesel wearing camo and shows everyone at work his "hunting" pictures Pathetic what goes on hunting and fishing , should call it something else

Yes, I went back and watched the video. Dave Mercer made the comment. I was never a fan of Mercer, in reading and hearing his story this is a guy that was in the right place at the right time. In my opinion he is not going to go against anything the industry does right or wrong. He's like the company man, we've all met this person, the yes man that the company continued to promote up up and up. And because of that this company man will stand behind anything the company does or promotes. That to me is an example of Dave Mercer. I'm sure he's a nice guy, he is fun to watch as he is working the tournaments, but i'm not surprised to hear him make such a comment. Swindle on the other hand is just simply stating a fact. For an example when he spoke about the Christmas holidays and family back in the beginning of the vid, you can see he's an old fashion down to earth hard working man. BUT his living depends on winning. IF he does NOT use forward facing sonar he can't compete simply because the other competitors are using it. He even said that basically. He has no choice unfortunately. If I was in his shoes and had enough money winnings to support my family, pay my kids collage, medical etc. I would quit competing and join your fight against forward facing sonar. But obviously that's not the case with him. I had 0 problem with anything Swindle said. Ok, so I'm also an avid bass fisherman. Unfortunately my wife has never been on board with me buying a fancy bass boat and all the equipment or especially going into debt. So, I have a small aluminum boat I fish reservoirs with and I fish ponds. Im with you Randy on this forward facing sonar crap. Im concerned that these reservoirs that already have a ton of fishing pressure will be ruined as time goes on because of it. But you can't tell these young internet so called playstation geeks this stuff. For one Randy, they don't care, they always want the newest and best thing no matter what the cost. For the ones competing in tournament fishing its about the money, period! That's all they care about. I'm seeing more and more and younger people gambling on fantasy football and pro sports now more than ever. They want the $$$$ randy. That's the way they were brought up. They don't care about the environment Randy, they want to be cool. I admire you not giving up on this fight but you are fighting against 2 very tough monsters that are way bigger and way more powerful then any of us are. What are they? The younger generation and the BIG Corporate Conglomerates. Lastly I've stopped watching the tournaments, most of them, its rare now. And I used to not miss watching tournaments on TV. But now, with forward facing sonar, all you see is the backs of these fisherman. Anyway, I don't like it, and I do think its bad for fishing, bad for the sport and bad for the TV viewership. The industry will feel the effects of that unfortunately it be much later then sooner. Good luck with that fight Randy. Ive done a couple videos myself, nothing that got much views. I plan on doing one on this subject though soon.

Only thing i can suggest is use you name, sway you have in the industry, and platform to introduce and start an alternative tournament trail with no or limited electronics. And while working with the fisheries that want that tail to go thru their water, use a percentage of the money moved with the tournaments to go back into the fisheries kinda like Texas does. Maybe not a share lunker program or implement one to them nationwide. You have to have a way for tournament fisherman to see and follow. Like the way because honestly it'll only be discussions if there not a way to show the system it's flaws. Like find fisheries that lack a lot of higher end tournaments and start there so nothing can be linked to technology s and prove it. You're young enough to think up, start and show the way. Be safe, Unc. Love from Kentucky

Buddy I am from Indiana and you are 100% correct I have been seeing this trend as it spirals down hill The way I noticed it is how tough certain lakes are that I have fished all my life and I still tournament fish and the year before was tougher and last year was horrible because the fish who had a safe place to lay before they move up to feed are getting pounded so there for they are not moving This fish also looked horrible Hook marks all over there face and skinny But on the other hand we have a few lakes darn near completely choked out by weeds where foward facing sonar has a hard time and those lakes are still thriving with healthy populations of healthy solid fish Big difference and these lakes are only 30 miles apart Dramatic difference
