Something Special in Cleveland, Montana | Photos by Todd Klassy

There's a place on the eastern Montana plains where People's Creek and the Bear Paw Mountains meet. It's a place they call Cleveland.
On first glance there's not much to Cleveland except for a saloon (when it is open) and a one-room schoolhouse (which serves one student). And it would be perfectly fair for those passing through to think nothing special ever really happens there. But they would be wrong.
Every spring, as the stiff Chinook winds begin to melt away a long winter's snow, neighbors - often separated by many miles - come together to help gather each other's cattle and brand them with the mark of their ranch. It is a tradition few people outside of Cleveland ever get to see.
Yes, Cleveland is quiet, but something special happens there every day...especially in the spring.
These are real cowboys; not the ones you see on the silver screen, but men and women who work hard every day to fight Montana's harsh weather, the struggle of raising a family, and whatever else the good Lord throws at them.
This is their story.

Thank you Todd for reminding me of coming home to Montana. When I left, part of my soul stayed there, because it knew where to belong and where peace and rest was located.

I now live in North Carolina. My brother lived in Montana. When I was living in Maryland, I went out to visit him one year, my first year in Montana. It was the best vacation of my life. I have been around the world, and met many people, but I have never met such an honest bunch of people than I did in Montana. I love the state.

Mr. Klassy, what a beautiful slideshow. I used to work at a ranch close to Loyld Mt. back in the 80's, and watching your video brought a smile and a tear to my eye. Branding time is such a special time, bringing family and friends together. Everyone pitching in to help out. Your pictures are truly works of art. Thank you for sharing them, and the good people of Cleveland Mt. with the rest of us.

I live in Kalispell, MT and it doesn't matter where in this state you live, or visit it is heaven, and Todd is right, if you can't appreciate it, especially if you have never been here, don't comment about it, you are just blowing smoke. Thanks for this video Todd, haven't been to Cleveland yet, but plan on a long tour of our gorgeous state. AMEN TO MONTANA!!!!!

Very well and good. You told the story just right without using words. We need so many more folks just like you to tell our story to the world so that they can better understand how much we care for our livestock and how food is really made in this great country. I am 70 or 80 miles South of Cleveland in Winifred Montana. Your are welcome here anytime.

Beautiful. Accurate. It took us 40 minutes to get to Cleveland where the pavement began, that is, when the roads were dry. A guy could get used to pavement. Left the family ranch near the next town over (Lloyd) 19 years ago seeking work. Went south & east. Couldn't stomach neighborhood life. Bought a small farm. Boys ran a few cattle for college tuition. Here my wife can garden, even in winter. My saddle is stowed. Spurs sit in some forgotten drawer. But, my boots, hats, and favorite Charlie Russell Bronc to Breakfast buckle attire me. And I refuse to pave our driveway. The man may leave Montana, but Montana never leaves the man. Thanks.

Thank you Todd Klassy. I was raised on a ranch in the Helena valley, was lucky enough to have a Dad who taught me all this growing up. I've been away from it for too many years to count and my Dad has passed. You have completely touched my heart and captured by roots in a way that is hard to describe. Thank you. I need a tissue now.

Gorgeous Photos. As a fellow Nebraska rancher I know all too well how the processing goes. We use a tilt table to work our calves though. I have gone to a branding. They are a lot of work but it is amazing how neighbors pull together to help each other.

who is to say life on a ranch in Montana is less than a life anywhere else. Some of the best moments of life are as simple as having breakfast with Grandma and Grandpa at the table.

Thanks, Todd. The Highline is a sub-geography and a sub-culture of the state as a whole. My homeland is XXXXXXX County. (I don't want to draw attention to it). Only different from the Highline to a keen eye. A balanced program would have more living images, i.e. a school in use today. A church with pickup trucks out front. A saloon with cowboys jawin' on the front porch or steps, etc. But, I'm an expat for awhile, and I appreciate any Montana image. May the wind be at your back...

All I can say to you is You are a city person and don't see the way real life is lived out here in Montana. Yes from a real Cowboys perspective, Montana weather and harsh cold conditions are not for everyone, especially a person who has electric heat and doesn't have to work to provide heat for their family. Maybe you just need to come out and see how much you can take. An another thing is we care about our families more than you do because we rely on them to survive.
