Something Isn't Right at this Ranch!
Sometimes you can get an eerie feeling when you travel down these seldom traversed, seen, or known about roads. When you realise that no other vehicle has been along this same path in a very long time, excitement and a touch of uncertainty take hold.
That was precisely the case for this place. When we arrived, there was something about the remoteness of the location, the setting and the mood felt off. As we walked nearer, the feeling of being watched and 'something wasn't right' filled the air.
Was it just a coincidence of random junk being left behind? Or were people that shouldn’t have been here, doing something they shouldn’t have been? We can’t be certain and will leave that for you to decide.

You're right, obviously these people were up to no good. The enclosure(s) with the wire cover appears to be an aviary. For those of us who love the high desert this is so sad. Not sure what they were doing there! It’s a mystery. But left us a little spooked!
Lots of mines were closed in the 1940s by law, to make people available for the war effort. The triangular cages would have been for chickens, you drag them around to give the chickens some new pecking grounds, yes they need water and grain too.
That's not for kitty cats that's a chicken coop

Desert dwellers a lot of times down on the line that they're dwelling on and when you see a lock and chain like that on a door it's because their stuff is locked up inside of it...... I don’t think this site was as sinister as you believe. I think it was rented from forestry and run by a wildlife rehabber. That is not purely for canine care. A puppy miller would not be living so simply and far from areas to sell animals. There are mainly coyotes in the area. I used to do wildlife rehab in the past. Perhaps what you were feeling as unsettling was the suffering of injured and sick wildlife like in many old hospitals.
@PinInTheAtlas

We had never thought of that. Hopefully it was a rehab place. We weren't expecting to find any of this, just ruins of a homestead, so we were quite shocked.

There are in fact vast amounts of private holdings on public land, including in National Parks. I personally have a friend who owns a home inside of Yosemite NP. His family have lived in it and passed it down for generations. Same in Saline Valley. Just ask Chili Bob. Also all along sections of the Mojave Trail are private holdings on BLM areas. Many more i'm sure. These are just a few I thought of quickly.

If it was abandoned years ago. What makes it BLM land? If it hasn't been occupied for more than 10 years everything could be overgrown. People could also have been using it as a dump grounds illegally since then too.

This particular site is so remote that it would be highly unlikely to be used as a dumping ground, but stranger things have happened.
