As a nurse practitioner I’m so thankful that you are not eager to get antibiotics right away. This means on the rare instance your children will need them, the antibiotics will work.

That’s not how antibiotic resistance works. Antibiotic resistance is about the bacteria that’s being transmitted across a population, not about how well an antibiotic will work in an individual. Not to say that not jumping to antibiotics isn’t helpful - that’s the way it should be to help the population not to experience antibiotic resistance. But individuals don’t experience personal benefits of that.

laurenb2407 ..gardenfnp didn't mention antibiotic resistance. It's just a general statement that if you don't take them all the time..they'll work when you need them. Is that right? Or no? My kids have never taken antibiotics and my oldest is 17. It sucks that we never use them but have to live with the situation created by others over using.

On kids toys....we did not have much money and I did not want to just get rid of their things because replacing was not an option and someone who loved them gave them . I took one closet, put a light in it and organized shelves and hooks and put all of the toys in there. I put a lock on the door and we switched out toys. My boys could have a couple toys out at a time but when they wanted something else they had to pick up what they had...sometimes with my help if they needed , and they would get to go to the closet and switch out. They loved it. I loved it because their toys stayed together and we never had toy pieces all over the place. It also taught them to care for their things and respect those people who cared enough to give them nice things. The toys never got old this way by having full nice toy sets to take out and play with. It was stress free and everyone was happy.

Absolutely love this podcast! I have been in healthcare for over 40 years, a “front line” RT. From the time my first child was born (40 years ago) to present- I have used homeopathic remedies and as I worked longer in healthcare, I have really dug in to the naturopathic, homeopathic, herbal/essential oil remedies; I am not anti-western medicine, obviously as I work in it), but, my experiences have led me to believe that to allow natural healing to build our immune system and it will take a lot to get me to go see my western medicine doctor outside of annual exams and labs. The human race has survived thousands of years through plagues, viruses and infections using natural medicine, the 19th century is what brought in what we now know as “big pharma” and the discovery of antibiotics and vaccines. Think of that- it’s only been 200 years that people began relying on industrialized medicine- oh how did folks survive those first 1,000+ years or even longer? As for GMO’s, one of the things I realized about GMO’s is when we were in Asia and anything with flours never bothered us (friends said the same about breads in Europe) but any commercial US bought flours and breads caused a lot of discomfort (bloating, gas) and we all realized that standard processed flours and breads in the stores were made from GMO grains, once we all switched to non-GMO grains (now milling our own) we didn’t have the intestinal discomfort. I have questioned the entire GMO basis, and as you stated (paraphrasing), our bodies do not recognize the genetic modifications in our natural food sources. So, our HEALTH is primarily based on what we consume- food and drink and western medicine. Researching and making the best choices for your family is so important to how well your family feels, thinks (cognition and processing is tied to what we ingest) and recovers from not just everyday living but long term health.

As a mom to seven grandma to 18 , I so agree with your take on toys ! I wish all children could have woods an a creek to play in ! Our children built forts and dams and floated on pieces of styrofoam. hunted crayfish an fried them up , fished and slid down the stairs In cardboard, hitched each other to the wagon with baler twine . Oh that had loads of fun with no toys even though they did have toys but were soon bored with those .Also this is cringey but growing up we bathed every Saturday night necessary or not 😅in summer we swam in the creek every day and washed our feet face and hands before we went to bed .

I wholeheartedly agree with you Lisa, I too, let them have a bath especially when they need it, and let them swim and enjoy themselves in the summer! I grew up with an above ground swimming pool and spent many a whole day in my pool, along with my friends. I can also remember, drinking out of our hose pipe, was too lazy to go indoors! lol! It was the best tasting cold water ever! I agree with you with the GMO’s as well. When I was growing up in the 60’s and 70’s, the food didn’t have as many preservatives in it, my mom cooked from scratch, except from bread. Lisa, I can still remember my mom would get our milk and dairy products from the milkman ( when I was a little girl!). Since I had my own family, I do the same thing, I have organic or farm fresh products, get my meats from the butcher, and seasonal produce. That has helped with my family a lot, but I’m discovering things as I get older ( I’ve currently turned 65), I can’t tolerate certain foods that I could do, say five or ten years ago. I sometimes think age might be a factor in the absorption of vitamins and things. On my doctor’s request, I’ve started taking milk thistle, about a month ago, for my liver, which I must say, noticed an improvement. Also started eating foods high in magnesium ( blueberries and watermelon) for my leg cramps at night. Have also noticed a slight improvement, which is great.

A few suggestions for infection and swimmer's ear... Allibiotic by Now brand vitamins has garlic and oregano, etc. We take it in lg quantities when we have an infection. If our children get swimmer's ear, we put a dropper full of rubbing alcohol in their ear, leave it set for 30 seconds and then turn their head to "pour it out". We have made it a habit to do after anytime we swim, and it has saved lots of painful ear aches! 😊

Remote vs device... I add matching stickers. This remote goes to the truck... They both have the same snowman sticker. This remote goes to all the TVs. All the remotes and all the TVs have the same star sticker. Some stickers are freebies I get with advertisements. Some stickers, I print on extra shipping labels. I cover the sticker with packing tape to protect it from wear and tear. I recently moved and all the remotes were in the same box. The stickers made it soooo easy to match everything back together. If the remotes/toys had matching stickers, they might play with them longer? Because they can charge the batteries etc. 💖🌞🌵😷

I'm ruthless with decluttering toys and follow many of the principles you laid out. I declutter often and I rotate. My rotation isn't on an official cadence but, basically, anytime kids are making a mess with ALL the toys vs actually playing, that's my cue that it is time for a rotation. We have almost exclusively open ended play toys, puzzles and books. Those seem to have the most longevity. Anyway, the fewer toys we have, the better they play! Oh, and no screens will help them be more engaged in what they do have as well.

Do NOT let your children go longer than 2 days without being able to keep down liquids because of vomiting and diarrhea. My son was about 15, and we believe contracted meningitis, which is common in athletes that age. He couldn't keep anything down. I was busy with my other 4, and kept putting glasses of gatorade and 7up wherever he was. I noticed he wasn't drinking them. I had a physician friend come check him about day 3 for dehydration. He didn't insist i take him to urgent care. Long story short, he had a brain bleed and clotted and is a walking miracle. Since then, I keep (Phenergan) suppositories on hand to help with nausea, but would never let a child go padt 48 hours without demonstrating they can drink and keep it down.

I babysit my grandchildren while their parents work and we have quite a few toys. The ages of the kids are 4yrs, 2yrs, 16 months and almost 9 months. I have 2 rooms separated by a baby gate and all of the toys that have more/smaller pieces stay in one room and the “baby” toys stay in the other. The 4 year old is very diligent about keeping all of the toys he plays with together and picked up when he’s finished with them. The 2 year old is getting better at it but still needs quite a bit of reminding when he is fine playing with a toy. The 4 year old, 2 year old and even the 16 month old help put the baby toys away before they leave my house. My one daughter who works from home comes over once a week with her 2 girls (ages 2 years and almost 9 months) so they can play with their cousins and then it can sometimes get a bit chaotic because they’re not as used to Nana’s Rules but it all ends up fine and I enjoy having them over. I enjoy all of your videos and topics. It is VERY interesting and I want to learn how to handle sour dough before my fourth is born in November. I learned how to make yogurt, sour cream, broth/stock, kefir , sauerkraut…. for health reasons and we enjoy it. I can easily do yeast breads and brioches and pizza doughs, but no sour dough yet. I enjoy your point of view and I also go by „you look dirty“ or „have you had a bath this week or not yet“ 😅 So looking forward to have my fourth and give up on trying to control everything. I struggle with getting rid of toys but try my best and try to not get them in the first place. My tip for birthdays is, get them something useful or active (water slide, scooter, bike, skate board, jumping rope, cute towel maybe with their name on it, cute lunch box for school etc.) they love it and you don’t end up with a ton of toys. And yes thrifting toys also 👍🏻🙌🏻 God bless you and you should come visit to Germany 😅😁

My husband struggles with my getting rid of toys so I stopped getting any! I tell those who want to give gifts to please get something that adds to a collection we already have or something that uses up. We still get some random stuff but so much less! I think ill start 'borrowing out' more toys to family and friends so we can limit our stockpile of toys no one uses

I saw your episode on the Now that we're a family podcast! I live in CDA and had planned to go to the expo with my 4H kids, but they ended up not wanting to go, they're young and it was the rabbit processing that they were invited to attend. Anyway, it was a great episode, and I'm glad you were able to see their studio before they sold their house, they're now off grid on their property, but they brought their yellow chairs! Pretty exciting adventure for them! Great episode, I like your solo episodes, and I could tell you were not interrupting your guests, I knew it was a lag, don't worry it didn't make you or your guests look bad, your podcasts are excellent! ❤

Too many toys causes them stress, and they get overwhelmed, I keep my kids toys organized and rotate them, I lock the rest up, but whenever they want something they clean up their current toys and trade them in, no problem, but they cant have them all at once, it's too much for me and for them.

I recently got rid of a lot of my son's toys that he never played with and was just taking up space. He only plays with his cars and trucks but his imagination has really grown, he'll set up so many scenarios with pretend emergencies with his police cars and fire trucks. I've been guilty of letting him watch my phone or tv too much but getting rid of all his toys except the ones he plays with the most actually made him play more and watch tv less.

That's so true! I've packed away all toys besides the minimum that they use and they pay a lot more! The 2 oldest play with one thing constantly (clics) and my 2 year old plays with his cars and trucks non stop! I have a couple more things out for a change but it hardly gets looked at in favor of those. Let alone the ones that are away, those are never mentioned even! Now I need to find a way to get it to someone who will enjoy it without my husband having conniptions

I enjoy watching you and learning from you! Thank you! I also smile when you talk about being minimalist...I think to myself are you really living minimally yourself (your household items, decor, kitchen, craft, garden items, books, etc) or working to ensure your kids have minimal toys, books, craft stuff, etc. so you have less mess to clean up? I am a Mom of 4 so definitely understand--just thought I would ask the question.

I recommend nursing to sleep to every Mama, it's what nature intended, which is why there is more melatonin in the breastmilk at night :)

GMO is a funky thing. You are talking about inserting foreign genetic material into crops, breeding them and then eating that. Just because something hasn’t been scientifically proven to be harmful doesn’t mean it isn’t. I don’t think it’s harmful in the short term but I think it has larger implications- for example fruits have thousands of secondary compounds which are vital to our health. (It’s why taking a vitamin isn’t better than eating that vitamin in the context of food). There are other compounds that contribute to health. When you genetically modify foods, you risk changing the food structure and matrix. Also what you said was true, we don’t genetically modify foods to make them healthier, we modify them to make them “ripe” longer, to make them more disease resistant, to make them bigger. This has consequences for nutrition (and flavor)

Antibiotics are important for actual strep. This goes for strep B for full term mothers, newborn babies, and others. I've had 2 friends nearly lose babies over strep B. Read up on PANDAS and strep A (strep throat), a condition where strep can attack the brain. Happened to my Mom and a friend's child about 8 years ago. Their son still has issues today.
