Some People - Rosalind Russell 's own voice - Final Take - Gypsy 1962

Фильм және анимация

Here is Roz' final attempt at singing this song, and the one she performed to while filming. This is not the take that was released on CD in 2005, and it's better than that one (though still not usable). This is actually made up of multiple takes edited together (not by me).
She was completely dubbed in this number by Lisa Kirk in the released film. Roz includes exactly three paragraphs on "Gypsy" in her autobiography, "Life Is A Banquet."
___________________________________
At first I was only to act the part; Rose's singing was dubbed by a professional with a big trained voice. When I heard it, I got sick. "It isn't me," I said. "I'm bad, but I can't stand to hear that. Everybody knows I don't sing operatically, it throws the balance off." Warner Brothers agreed and rescored the picture, and I sang my own part. People still say that I didn't, but that's Roz, and nobody else, as Rose on the soundtrack of Gypsy.
___________________________________
Roz, we love you, but if that's you in the film, then who's that singing in these clips? Ethel?
Rumor has it that Merman, rightfully angry that she was not cast in the film, got hold of these recordings and used to play them for friends at parties. Now why would she do that? =)
(Note that she sings the original lyric, "Hey, L.A., I'm comin' your way" - apparently the story had not been rewritten at the time of filming.)
From TCM:
Though she had starred in the stage musical "Wonderful Town" ten years earlier, Russell's voice didn't have the power required for the score. After listening to her recording of the numbers, even Russell had to agree that she would need to be dubbed, though she would deny this, too, in her memoirs. Russell's voice was used only for the patter portions of the numbers. For the real singing, Broadway belter Lisa Kirk, who had starred in the original stage production of "Kiss Me, Kate," modulated her voice to a near perfect match for Russell's.

Strangely, her poor vocal quality here more clearly highlights how wonderfully she acted the song. She created a memorable character in this film.

These comments dissing a legend like Rossalind. I know we are use to hearing people like Bernadette, bette, and even Patti sing it but Ethel Merman was the originator and she isn't that great either. Rose is suppose to a brassy broad and not suppose to be played by some one one with great singing chops. She is not the talented one. I love her voice. It has such great character. Not everything has to be pristine. Sometimes the character does not call for that.

You might find it interesting that Cole Porter publicly said that he considered Ethel Merman to be a very good singer who could flatten or sharpen a note for the effect. Direct quote from him: “She’s that good”. The unfortunate truth is that she was singing well past the time that she maybe should have retired from singing. That’s what some of us may remember. The old lady who had more brassiness than sweetness in her voice. She started singing on Broadway in the 1920’s. It’s hardly any wonder that her voice aged so severely, considering how vigorously she used it.

"But I at least gotta try," indeed! And since she did film the part with her own vocals, her claim that "that's Roz, and nobody else, as Rose on the soundtrack" isn't entirely a lie. (She also says in her autobiography that she wasn't much for seeing herself on film.) Still, she's so great in the acting department, and the Lisa Kirk vocals are such a good match, I've never understood why this movie is considered such a dud when "West Side Story" and "My Fair Lady," also featuring less-than-ideally-cast leads with dubbed singing voices, are Best Picture Oscar-winning classics. That set was used again a few years later as George and Martha's unhappy home in "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?"

Rosalind Russell was wonderful. She could do both comedy and drama. She had a smash hit Broadway musical "Wonderful Town". However, the songs for "Wonderful Town" were tailored for her by Leonard Bernstein and fit her limited vocal range. In the movie, "Gypsy" she acted the part of Mama Rose well. I can see why Roz or any actress would want to play Mama Rose. However, Rosalind's own vocal tracks, for this film, are awful. The Jule Styne-Stephen Sondheim songs are out of her range. Sadly, her vocal tracks did not work on the big screen. The big screen magnified every bad note and vocal limitation. It is interesting to see and hear Rosalind Russell's tracks synched with the film clips on KZread.

I believe that she should have been allowed to do her own singing for the movie. She wasn’t a perfect singer, but she was good enough. Don’t forget, she was in a Broadway musical (Wonderful Town), and she got good reviews for that.

@@lostvocals8 I believe that if she had been given just a little more time and perhaps some vocal coaching to get her past her weak points that she would have given an award-winning singing performance. I can't help thinking that the studio was very careless in the way they handled the vocals for all of the cast. Even the ones whose voices were used were not recorded as carefully as they should have been, in my opinion.
