Some Fossil Hunting Tips You Really Should Know!🧐

Ойын-сауық

I will show you some fossils I find in this video and how I prepare them, using a pin for picking at them and toothpaste to abrade them. It’s best to soak your fossils from the Jurassic Coast, when you get home in freshwater to get the salt out of them. Then dry them for a few weeks on a shelf.I go on a long fossil walk to the East of Lyme Regis, in conjunction with safe tide times. The best fossils are found at low tide .I hope you find some fossils along the Jurassic Coast-at low tide. Sometimes fossil hunting turns out to be treasure hunting, it’s fun just to see the “ treasures” on the large rocks. The Jurassic Coast really does have some stunning fossils. I recommend wearing safety glasses and sturdy rubber gloves when hammering the right rocks. Remember the cliffs are dangerous and liable to fall suddenly and without warning. Keep away from the dangerous cliffs. The best fossils are washed out onto the beaches at low tide, by the sea's actions. Look out for the slippery seaweed on the ledges and rocks. I offer fossil walks along the Jurassic Coast on the following website, so feel free to take a look at the website I made, with our online fossil walks ------www.lymeregisfossilwalks.com There is a fossil collecting code of conduct in place along the Jurassic Coast- #fossils #fossilhunting#fossilammonites

I followed all of your tips and my golden ammonites turned out beautifully! Thanks for showing us the exact process (I never thought of squishing the center of the varnished ammonites to spread around the varnish and remove the excess). Happy hunting!

Thanks I use toothpaste sometimes especially when I’ve been picking at them with a pin and have left a few scratch marks . I soak my iron pyrite ammonites for a week and change the freshwater to leach the salt out of them . Then I dry them for a few weeks on a shelf and varnish them to highlight them and protect them from the air somewhat

Thanks 🙏 for your comments. It seems to help with any of the white marks on calcite produced by a pin 🌀📌 . I’ve gone on to use other things to do that work, but it’s something everyone has got ,the old toothpaste
