Its an air filter. Keeps the gasses from a firearm from contaminating the air by trapping them inside.

Have you ever tried to destroy one of your cleaning tools before? Like, the bore sight I wrecked the other day just for shits and giggles. It would be interesting to find out how much powder it would take to wreck one of these Baffled Cleaning Kits. A video on that would be cool. Saw a video a few days ago of a guy trying to melt a barrel with a super fast "semi-auto" trigger (FRT-15 haha). Those damn barrels are rugged! lol

The fucking ATF expert is here ladies and gentlemen. It's made of stainless steel. But it is made no more because I destroyed it. Trust me bud, I am a xray pipewelder and I know metals, it was stainless. But please leave your dumb comments below. Edit: also, while your at it Mr. ATF you should stick around, maybe even use Google. WTF do you think suppressors are made of..???? I may eventually get another one, depending on what happens with the court case in Texas. As far as I know, you are aloud to own them in Texas, without registering it. I am not sure if that's true. I heard as long as it doesn't leave Texas you can own them. But I do know that there is a court case going on right now about the legality of them.
