Solo Wild Camp Ruined at Raven's Crag - Etiquette of Wild Camping, Does It Exist?
It was my first solo wild camp in a while, I was so looking forward to it. Unfortunately it got ruined! Does the etiquette of wild camping really exist? I would love to hear your thoughts in the comments below.
Please let it be know, I DO NOT think I have the god given right to tell people where to pitch up. I'm just asking for privacy when I'm out on my camps.
I had planned the trip to Raven's Crag after the weather turned nasty up in Scotland so the plan was to do a solo camp here then push on and meet Matt & Martin the next day and head for a mountain tarn camp to do some fishing.
I got there pretty early and found nobody else up there. I had the pick of the spots. That all changed later on as you will find out in this video when I was faced with another group of campers who unintentionally disrupted my solo camping experience.
I'll also provide some tips and insights into the etiquette of wild camping and how to navigate camping near others while respecting nature and preserving the tranquility of our surroundings.
Etiquette of Wild Camping:
Wild camping etiquette is all about respecting the space and privacy of fellow campers. I'll share my experience of how other campers pitched their tents too close to mine, and discuss the importance of giving each other enough space for a comfortable and peaceful camping experience.
Respecting the Outdoors:
Preserving the natural beauty of the outdoors is crucial. The prohibition of fires on mountain or crag tops to protect the environment is a must. Please respect the signs posted on the way up to these beautiful spots for us all to enjoy. There were umpteen fire pits that weren't cleared, leaving massive scaring on the landscape. Come on! LEAVE NO TRACE please!
Creating a Harmonious Atmosphere:
When camping near others, being considerate and mindful of noise and behavior is essential. I'll share practical tips on how to navigate limited camping space, minimize disturbances, and promote a friendly and respectful camping environment.
On a nice note, the winner of the Vango Soul Tent is somewhere within the video for you eagle eyed subscribers. Can the winner please email me their full name & address please. You will find my email on the About section of the channel. For everyone else, there will be plenty more prizes to be won and coming to the channel very soon so make sure you subscribe!
Don't forget to like and share this video with folks who enjoy our great outdoors, as it really helps the channel out. To stay upto date with the videos why not hit the notification bell, that way you won't miss up and coming prizes but most of all... The new videos each week!

forgive me, but i thought the etiquette of wild camping included the following advice - don’t camp in places where there are specific signs up asking you not to. pitch up at dusk or after dark break camp at dawn or very soon after you can’t just follow bits of the accepted etiquette and not all.

All that was followed by one. No signs to say no camping (there was for no fires) I pitched at 4.30pm, nobody was around for the hour I waited before pitching and the weather was bad . I was up at 5.30am and was away by 7am.

Wild camping at a spot where it's fine to camp (like in Scotland) doesn't require getting there late and leaving early. That's only needed when you're trying to camp undetected.

My mates and I were wild camping in the lake district 35 + years ago because we were very poor and wanted to save money on the campsite fees. Bumpy hilly fields with no amenities 50p to £1.50 pppn. They were the most memorable and exiting holidays I have had.But we just enjoyed them and didn't try to promote it as a thing to do.The paradox is that KZreadrs creating videos of this leisure pursuit have created the problem of too many sheeple doing this in too small of a space.Maybe avoid the easy to get to places and go a bit off piste to enjoy the peace and solitude that so many of us need

Hi Baggies, nothing wrong with that at all mate. I go out to get away from the stresses of my life. I camp, make videos and edit. That's my stress relief. I always try my best to do the right thing. I've got a goal of places I want to camp and make film at and this was one of them. I did what I could to minimise the amount of foot traffic that was going to be up there by going during the week and it worked, there were three ither groups of camps that came with space left over to pitch at that weren't anywhere near me. Big thanks for your thoughts and for watching the video. I appreciate it. Ant 👍

To be honest mate I'm 60 now, and been wild camping all my life, and I see no difference today in the amount of people going to those popular camping spots.Camping always been popular. Though I do see more people walking on the footpaths in these areas. I do avoid all that though, by using compass and keeping off the walking trail..

I had an issue once when out in the Peaks, it was around 12am and a couple rocked up, walked right past my tent with their head torches on full beam, chatting away and then pitched up round the corner from me. Probably like you, our camping trips are an escape from everyday life, and we just want time and space on our own. With wild camping it's just unwritten rules and the hope that other campers are decent and have done their homework. Yes, the views were stunning in the morning which made me feel more chilled matey. Obviously no where near him I was prepared to move on if not. We ended up chatting all night and he was a top bloke so things worked out. I visited Raven Crag on a day hike and what a lovely spot the views are amazing however look down from the viewing platform and the evidence of wild campers is obvious the amount of scorched grass where people have had fires was unbelievable. Does seem a place the younger campers go why they have fires is beyond me and I’m totally with you on that, it’s a shame the few spoil it, like you say camping etiquette seems to have gone some people just don’t respect there surroundings. This is a coincidence as I was about to start a series on camping etiquette and the byelaws on Dartmoor. I've no idea about the Lakes since camping isn't strictly 'legal' but common sense should come into practice when camping near someone else. I'd be pretty certain that campfires would be illegal though. The lighting of them in the hills and mountains, especially leaving scars, sheds a bad light on every camper regardless. This is what gets camping banned and is likely to keep camping banned. You have every right to be angry/peeved.

I’ve literally walked a further mile because someone was pitched where I had planned. It’ll not be long before they start really clamping down over there. Haha! You did keep it clean Andy! Very well done and hats off to you haha! Seriously though its right in what you say. I know first hand what a fire can do to a moorland. The Pennine's went up and burned for months a few years back, they could not stop it and that was through an ass with a BBQ. There's a time and a place for fires, we know this and so should anyone who as that idea in their head to start one. I would do the same mate, there is no way I would be anywhere near anybody on a camp. As I've said on other comments, as you know there are more than one spit to pitch up on the Crag itself but there's a whole forest just behind that is gorgeous. Madness, utter Madness to use your saying. It's very true, we are lucky to have a place like the Lake District that the locals turn a blind eye on wild campers. Stuff like this could change that. Thank mate and big thanks for your feedback on the subject 👍

Hi Ant, you drew me in with that title and I have watched you before mate. Interesting yes camping etiquette. We are getting older🤣 we’ve probably forgotten what being a young lad is like 😊. I too would not have been happy and I don’t agree with fires in those locations. I usually camp in the Peak District and I went by Alpert castles and there were 10 tents mostly young compared to me and for me I’m not going to camp there as it becomes camp site and I don’t like campsites but I do use them when necessary. I camped about a mile on from there in a location most don’t use. You definitely have to careful about your spot in the Peaks these days to feel that solitude. Anyway Ant I loved your chat and great video. ATB 🏕️👍

Hi Dave, good stuff mate. I don't do click bait videos, I express within a title what's going on in the video and this one was very important for me to get people to watch this video. I'm sure they were top lads but my point was that if you're heading out for the first time, just do your research before heading out the door. I spent months preparing for my first wild camp which you can watch on the channel matey. I need to head to the peaks mate, do some exploration but first I'll again do my research on location ls before heading out. Yeah I would have been nowhere near 10 tents either matey haha. Thanks so much for your thoughts on this Dave, cheers pal 👍

It's great to see folk getting out and enjoying the outdoors but I wouldn't be expecting solitude at a popular view point next to a path. These days if you want peace and quiet you need to get off the beaten track. A look at a map will give you loads of options for quality solitude. There used to be a few well known principles around wild camping etiquette like 'arrive late and leave early' and camping above the highest intake wall was generally accepted as good practice, but it seems like anywhere is fair game now. As for other folk camping next to you - well, it's like parking in the Lakes. Folk arrive and the car park is full but they haven't considered a Plan B so they just park anyway. It's a whole new world.

Bang out of order those other two sets of campers Ant, fires and pitching too close are two of my pet hates. I was over Islay last year and got myself a perfect coastal park-up in my campervan, a 4x4 rocks up, parks right next to me (there were plenty of other places to park) and 4 lads got out and proceeded to pitch their tents in the front of my vehicle. WTF?? I went out and had a word and they were all like "Is there a problem? Where's the problem?" I ended up driving off and parking elsewhere. And for wild camping I always head somewhere I know no-one else goes to - and preferably midweek 😂 That area's been ruined with the fire pits, absolute bell-ends. atb DVS :)

Just come across your video, new here. I totally get why you go up to a quiet place for the solitude and peace. I’m a mental health professional and spend as much time as possible in the countryside. Unfortunately I see lots of people disrespecting the great outdoors, but I also meet lots of wonderful people who respect their surroundings. I hike the Brecon Beacons (Bannau Brycheiniog) and people treat Pen Y Fan like it’s a park. One of my pet hates is the dog bags being left on a trail. Anyway, your view was beautiful and I’m not sure about you but just to get that perspective for a moment is worth the hassle.

I would not fancy tripping over that guy line in the night if I needed a gypsy's, as it is a big drop over that edge. Shame about the visitors, shame about the night and that whole crag was set of fire a canny few years ago by idiots lighting fires and such a shame they are still about. It’s also very disappointing not to get the solitude, it’s the main reason I don’t wild camp much in the Lakes as I don’t know if I will be alone, in the yorkshire dales I know that I’m 99% likely to have it to myself which is why I mainly go there. Finally worked out that I can see the words on screen if I press the correct button and then switch the sound off. Obviously am a newbie to this you tube stuff. Great vlog just shows that the words 'wild camping' can have many meanings. Really glad you had the moan get it off your chest then reboot fer't next adventure. 😉Steve

There are plenty of 'the high profile' KZread wild campers who can't seem to camp without having a fire & are unable to leave the place as they found it so the fire you saw could quite easily have been lit by someone who really should know better. With the young lads pitching beside you they may have done so in a comfort/safety sorted of way & perhaps you would of been better on this occasion welcoming them & giving them encouragement & sharing advice & experience with them? We've all encountered the same thing I'm sure, last year myself & the Mrs were up in the Arrochar Alps in Scotland, literally the middle of knowhere & a guy pitched up beside us not two feet from our tent,we found it very strange to say the least but the young guy was really nice & was on a bike packing trip & admitted he didn't feel really safe camping on his own away from other's,yes he could of went to a campsite I guess but like I said we were in the middle of nowhere, perhaps these young lads were of the same thinking? Etiquette is a rare thing these days in all forms of life let alone wild camping so I'd not lose too much sleep over it matey.

Hi Andy, to be fair every high profile youtuber I know (and I'm not bragging) look after and take care of the outdoors just like I do. They know how to square everything away and leave it just how they found it. For me, the two lads had their hearts set on pitching up on the edge no matter what, it didn't matter to them if there was someone else there, they just wanted the views but that's when etiquette comes into play and the whole point of this video really. It shouldn't be up to me to make them feel better, they asked me a question and I gave them an answer. They weren't fussed about my answer and stayed away. For me it's,just a bit of common decency really. Big thanks pal for watching and for commenting, Ant 👍

I can sympathise with you. Would I pitch up next to someone who's clearly told me they'd rather not be bothered? No, I think that's bad manners. Having a fire in that location was poor form too. At the same time, everyone has as much right to be there as anyone else (and in most of the country that's no right at all). As much as you'd hope people will be accommodating, I'd say it's worth bearing in mind that ultimately, you're asking someone else to do you a favour by changing their plans to keep you happy. Although it might be the decent thing for them to go somewhere else, it's also not necessarily unreasonable for someone to say no. The only other thing I'd say is that these folk had already set up their camp. At that point, I do think it's a bit much to ask someone to break camp and move, although I understand you didn't actually ask them to do that. All that said, as I say, I can totally sympathise. This would have spoiled the night for me too.

Personally i dont really bother with them but i do understand that camping and campfires kind of went hand in hand, but there is great off the ground fire pits now that i would seriously advice camper to use and keep the fire off the ground .Most of all we all should respect nature and people's space...

I've see first hand the damage it can do. We live very close to the Pennine's, and the moorland changed forever a few years back due to a guy who decided it was a good idea to take a BBQ up there and lit the whole Moors up. It burnt for months, countless wildlife perished, farms lost money, the cost of the emergency services working day and night must have been through the roof! Popularity means you’re going to get an increased number of simpletons messing things up for everyone. It would be better if nobody posted and kept the pitches quiet but looking at posts is part of the enjoyment. That's it mate, I don't own the area, this was never my point, my point was I wanted a peaceful chilled camp and I would have got it if they had looked for another pitch. Yeah my pitch was stunning, the views were something else pal. Big thanks for your thoughts and the watch matey, cheers, Ant 👍

@Olan... well, very kind like I say Olan. For me the recording and editing of the trip is as good as the adventure. I have a lot of stress in my life and this helps easy the pain. Yeah I constantly watch outdoor stuff on KZread haha! Thanks again buddy.

If you go to extremely popular spots like Raven Crag, don’t be surprised when knuckledraggers join you 🤷‍♀️

You be amazed at how many people see a tent in the middle of nowhere and pitch nearby, I've had a few do that over the years, never had a problem like but was just amazed why they would pitch so close. Maybe they thought I knew something they didn't 😂 There's too many folks lighting fires lately, hopefully once the drier weather comes they won't be setting fire to the fells.

Hi Crag, sorry for the later reply. Yeah it's very strange isn't it. The last place I'd want to be in I was wild camping (and this goes for being new to it) is anywhere near anybody else. Fires in the right places are totally fine just not on a Crag or moorland, very dangerous. Big thanks pal for commenting and for watching, Ant 👍
